Happy Death Day 2U: What CinemaBlend Thought Of The New Sequel

Its only been a little over a year since Happy Death Day hit theaters and Blumhouse Productions already has a sequel not only in the works, but shot, packaged and hitting theaters just in time for Valentines Day. This time around, the sequel has a more specific premise and goes in a totally different direction tonally than the first film.

Look, in particular Happy Death Day 2U is a sequel to Happy Death Day, but its probably not the movie you think it is, especially if youve seen the trailers. Both Jason Blum and director Christopher Landon have spoken out prior to the release of the film about how bonkers the movie is, and its no surprise to me that mileage might vary with the movie (as plenty of critical reactions have shown.)

Over at CinemaBlend, its been no exception. Some of us think Happy Death Day 2U is the bees knees, some of us didnt really get it and some of us liked it well enough but appreciated it trying hard to do something different. This is exactly the sort of movie that makes a roundup like this valuable. It can be really difficult to see a star rating for a movie like Happy Death Day 2U and know whether or not it will be worth your time. So, especially if you are on the fence about shelling out money to see this one on a very big screen, check out what we had to say about the new release.

First up is Mike Reyes, who wrote the official and might I add glowing review for Happy Death Day 2U. He said:

Happy Death Day was a novel original feature the did the groundwork for something truly exciting in Happy Death Day 2U. With a cast thats as game as Christopher Landon's script and direction are to really bring out the bonkers, all involved have not only stepped up their game with the sequel, theyve set a pretty high bar to clear for any potential follow-ups. The movie is fun with a capital F-U, as it plays with your expectations to not only get a bigger reaction than the first film, but to show off the full extent of the premise's possibilities. This is a movie you need to see with an audience, simply because the reactions are as golden as what happens on screen.

If you want more glowing recommendations, look no further than our own Eric Eisenberg, who has plenty to say about the movie and how it compares as a follow-up to 2017's Happy Death Day. Per Eric:

In a year that was already peppered with fantastic horror movies, Happy Death Day was a real surprise when it was released in 2017, and its a wonderful thing that writer/director Christopher Landon has had the opportunity to explore his vision for a sequel. Happy Death Day 2U is most definitely a change-up that fans should be prepared for with a genre switch that makes the material more sci-fi and comedy heavy than a Groundhog Day-type slasher story but its a worthy follow-up thats impressively clever, super funny, and has legitimate heart.

Then theres the slightly less enthusiastic take on Happy Death Day 2U from our own Mack Rawden, who nonetheless still feels like he was able to engage with and stay involved in the wild things happening on the screen in front of him.

Happy Death Day 2U is a weird movie that only gets weirder as it moves along. I'm still not entirely sure if it's a horror movie or a comedy or a dramedy about a science experiment or all of the above, but you certainly won't see anything else like it this year. I'm not entirely sure I would say I had a great time, but I remained interested, which is more than I can say for a healthy percentage of movies. So, if you like the unusual, go for it. If you're looking for a paint-by-numbers horror movie, this certainly isn't it.

Cody Beck said he was also a little bit confused about how this movie ended up panning out as a story, but he had a fun enough time and was at least happy he checked the final product out. Plus, he hopes it makes enough money to continue the franchise into a third movie sometime down the line, which is something Christopher Landon has already expressed interest in doing and has ideas about.

Happy Death Day 2U is a bloody fun sequel, but the leap from horror to sci-fi leaves a little to be desired. Compared to the first film, many of the slasher-film elements that made me love Happy Death Day are put on the backburner in lieu of adding too much exposition. I'd still recommend checking it out and really hope that Landon is able to wrap up his trilogy.

Personally, I think the movie is neither as funny nor as scary as the first movie, but still earns a merit badge for being unlike any other movie I will likely see this year. Or as I put it

This movie is utterly and completely bonkers. You wont see anything like it elsewhere this year and you also probably wont see a sequel that tries for something quite so different from the original movie elsewhere either. Despite a few scenes that miss for me, I love how Happy Death Day 2U doesnt fall into the usual sequel trap. See it and judge for yourself.

What We Know About Chris Evans Marvel Contract

Ever since he was injected with the Super Soldier Serum and became the Star Spangled Man with a plan, Steve Rogers has been one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most important heroes. During both World War II and the present day, Captain America has kept humanity safe from the forces of evil, including most recently fighting alongside Earth's Mightiest Heroes against Thanos' army in Avengers: Infinity War. But it's possible that his tenure could be ending soon.

It's no secret that although the MCU will continue past Avengers 4, that movie will wrap up both the Phase 3 era and conclude many story threads that have been running through the franchise since it launched in 2008. And while Marvel is still keeping quiet about Avengers 4 story details, given the magnitude of this movie and how Avengers: Infinity War went down, many fans suspect that one or a few characters will exit this shared universe before the credits finish rolling, with Captain America being one of the most popular candidates. Before delving into the likelihood of that happening, let's go over the details of Chris Evan' MCU contract.

When Chris Evans signed onto Captain America: The First Avenger in 2010, the MCU was basically still in its infancy, as only Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man 2 had been released, and Thor was in the middle of principal photography. Nevertheless, a franchise is a franchise, and when you're hiring an actor to play Captain America, you understandably want to ensure he'll be around a while. So Evans signed a standard six-picture contract to play his second superhero role (the first being The Human Torch in the 2000s Fantastic Four movies).

Fast-forward to now, Chris Evans has made all six of those initial appearances. Following the first Captain America movie, naturally he also led sequels The Winter Soldier and Civil War, and he was an important ensemble player in The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers: Infinity War. Evans also cameoed in Thor: The Dark World (as a disguised Loki) and Spider-Man: Homecoming (through hilarious PSAs), but those appearances didn't count towards his contract.

So if Chris Evans had stuck to his original six-picture contract, Avengers: Infinity War would have been his last appearance. Fortunately, the actor decided not to call it quits after Thanos wiped out half of all life in the universe and decided to reprise Captain America in Avengers 4, describing his reasoning for the extension thusly:

I had six films in my Marvel contract, so I could have said after the third Avengers I was done, but they wanted to make the third and fourth Avengers films as a two-parter. They said they had so many other characters to fit in -- Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Ant Man -- and couldn't get them all into one movie. [I agreed] because it made sense. It's going to wrap everything up.

So as things stand now, contractually speaking, Avengers 4 is Chris Evans' last Marvel movie, but what about the future? What are the chances that Evans could stick around as Captain America in Phase 4, even if Steve Rogers isn't around as much as he was during Phases 1-3. That remains up in the air, although lately, there's been a bigger sense that we should make peace with Evans leaving for good.

Initially in 2014, it seemed like Chris Evans would let go of Captain America once his contract ran out, as he told Variety that he wanted to retire from acting altogether and step behind the camera after his time at Marvel wrapped up. But later that same year, Evans clarified that he wasn't letting go of the patriotic shield anytime soon, and in the years since then, he's seemed thankful to get to play Steve Rogers.

Nevertheless, there's been regular speculation about something happening to Captain America in Avengers 4, whether it's dying in battle, retiring from the superhero life, reuniting with Peggy Carter, etc, that takes him off the board. And then on October 4, 2018, Evans' tweeted the following about finishing his Avengers 4 reshoots.

This led many to assume that Chris Evans was saying goodbye to Captain America, but the actor clarified what his tweet actually meant while appearing at Ace Comic-Con, saying:

I should clarify that I know I did tweet something that made a lot of people think that it was in some way a spoiler. I should clarify that regardless of how Avengers 4 ends, I would have tweeted the exact same thing. That last day of filming was a very emotional day, and it was the culmination of almost 10 years of filming and 22 movies, this unbelievable tapestry.

Alright, so we're not going to get a straight answer from Chris Evans about Captain America's Avengers 4 fate, but nevertheless, there's been no indication that Steve Rogers will be a major player in the MCU past Phase 3. Even if he were to stick around, with heroes like Black Panther, Captain Marvel and Doctor Strange taking over as the new "generation" of leading protagonists, we probably wouldn't see Steve consistently pop up, let alone lead another movie.

It's easy enough to keep comic book characters around for decades on the printed page, as these stories operate on a sliding timeline, allowing for each generation to have their own "version" of these heroes and villains. But the actors playing these characters in the MCU are aging, and while Chris Evans could conceivably keep Captain America for another decade, eventually he'll have to close this chapter of his life.

It also helps that there are others who could pick up the Captain America mantle if Steve Rogers is gone. Both Bucky Barnes, a.k.a. Winter Solider, and Sam Wilson, a.k.a. Falcon, have filled that role over the last decade, and Crossbones actor Frank Grillo suggested that a woman could don the red, white and blue costume. Maybe Sharon Carter? In any case, even if we never see Steve again after Avengers 4, at least keeping the Captain America legacy going through another character is on the table.
