New Avengers: Infinity War Video Shows Star-Lord Mocking Thor

Although the Guardians of the Galaxy have been an important part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the team was introduced in 2014, they've also been largely self-contained from the other corners of this ever-growing franchise. That changes in a few weeks in Avengers: Infinity War, as that movie will finally see the Guardians meeting the MCU's other prominent superheroes, including Thor. However, as you'll see in the new Infinity War video below, Peter Quill, a.k.a. Star-Lord, doesn't make a great first impression to the God of Thunder.

You have to remember that Peter Quill was taken from Earth at just eight years old, and even though he was raised by Yondu and learned how to take care of himself, he's never quite fully matured as he might have with a proper Earth upbringing. So when meeting Thor, a powerful and regal figure, it's not entirely surprising that Star-Lord starts mimicking his voice. He really needs to learn to read the room, though; when a super-strong "god" capable of manipulating lighting is trying to persuade you to join him and the Avengers in battling the forces of evil (or at least that's how it's being framed here), it's probably not a good idea to turn down his offer while making your voice deeper. Star-Lord is by no means a pushover, but even in his weakened state, Thor could easily kick his ass if he wanted to.

When we last saw Thor in Thor: Ragnarok, he had suffered a number of losses, and while he was able to save Asgard's citizens before their civilization was destroyed, he didn't get much of a breather, as his ship ran into a much larger and intimidating vessel. From what's been shown in the Avengers: Infinity War previews so far, the Guardians of the Galaxy will run into Thor (literally) after the God of Thunder's encounter with Thanos. The Guardians already have some experience with saving the universe, so despite Peter Quill's initial refusal (at least that's how it's framed in this TV spot), they will help fight back against the Mad Titan and his minions, which will eventually take them to Earth; the battle in Wakanda, specifically. Beyond that, it's unclear what's in store for this group, though they are primed to return for Avengers 4 next year.

Michael Shannon is one of the great modern movie villains. He's played the bad guy in everything from superhero movies like Man of Steel to the Oscar-winning The Shape of Water. One place he has yet to be the antagonist is the long-running James Bond franchise, though, as Jimmy Fallon recently brought up to the actor, there are many who would like to see that happen. Shannon thinks there's a specific reason why he's being attached to that film series, his remarkable resemblance to the actor Richard Kiel, who played one of the most famous Bond villains of all time, Jaws. While Jimmy Fallon says he doesn't see a resemblance between Michael Shannon and Richard Kiel, who played Jaws in a pair of Bond films in the 1970s, The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker, there is at least enough of a resemblance to see where people might get such an idea. It's less obvious with the facial hair Shannon has in his appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, but if you compare Kiel to Shannon without the mustache, the comparison certainly looks closer.While Michael Shannon says that Richard Kiel is among the actors he is most commonly said to look like, he seems glad when Fallon doesn't agree, which may mean if people expect to see Michael Shannon play a modern version of Jaws, that may be unlikely.It's difficult to argue that Michael Shannon wouldn't make a fantastic James Bond villain. He's been a great antagonist in many movies and he certainly has the charisma to be a fantastic Bond baddie. Having said that, if you get Michael Shannon in your James Bond movie, having him play a modern version of Jaws would be an utter waste of talent. Jaws was never more than a henchman to the main villain of the movies he appeared in and you don't waste Michael Shannon as a henchman.Jaws became instantly recognizable not simply of the metal teeth which gave the character his name, but because he stood at over seven feet tall, making him a massive roadblock for Roger Moore's James Bond. The character was so well liked by fans that even though he was a bad guy, he was given a love interest and a happy ending at the Moonraker.

We know there's a new Daniel Craig Bond movie on the way, so there is an opening available for a villain. There certainly would be worse choices for a villain than Michael Shannon. The as yet officially untitled Bond 25 is set to begin filming later this year with a November 2019 release currently scheduled.

The Cool Inspiration Behind Guardians Of The Galaxy's Flower Girl Scene

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has always thrived by paying homage to iconic films and classic genres. From the political thriller influences of Captain America: The Winter Soldier to the buddy cop stylings of Iron Man 3, MCU films regularly pay homage in ways that true movie fans love to pick up on. Few movies embody that idea quite like James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy, and now the director has taken to social media to confirm a notable connection between Groot (Vin Diesel) and James Whale's Frankenstein in the scene from the first Guardians movie where the walking tree gives a young girl a flower. Gunn wrote:

The inspiration for Groot giving the little girl the flower in GotG Vol 1, only without Groot murdering her afterwards. These James Whale movies are so magical and I hope kids still watch them.

If you thought that scene looked familiar, then this should help explain why. The scene in the original Guardians of the Galaxy involves Groot leaning down to hand a little girl a flower, and it directly mirrors the sequence from James Whale's Frankenstein in which Frankenstein's monster plays with a young girl by a lake. Of course, Gunn also made sure to note in his tweet that he wanted to have a happier ending for this particular encounter, as the scene in Frankenstein ends with the monster killing the girl.

The influence of Frankenstein on James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy actually makes quite a bit of sense, particularly when we consider the filmmaker's roots in the horror genre. Prior to entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Gunn spent quite a bit of time working on the scary side of the film industry, directing films like Slither, and writing Zack Snyder's 2004 zombie hit Dawn of the Dead. Moreover, the connections to Frankenstein don't necessarily stop with Groot, as Rocket Raccoon's origin story is arguably very close to the classic Mary Shelley monster.

Now we're left to wonder what the future may hold for Groot as the Marvel Cinematic Universe presses forward. The plant-like hero is one of many fan-favorite MCU heroes to fade away when Thanos (Josh Brolin) snaps his fingers and uses the Infinity Stones at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, and his death is one of the most heart wrenching as Rocket helplessly watches him disappear. We still have no idea if the character will return to survive the events of Avengers 4, but this reveal by James Gunn serves as a clear reminder that Groot is one of the kindest and most innocent heroes on the Marvel roster.
