Watch Shane Black's Full Apology On The Predator Red Carpet

Shane Black's new movie The Predator is now in theaters but while some may be focused on the film, a lot of the buzz around the movie right now is surrounds what you won't see in it. Specifically, a scene that was cut at the last minute following the revelation that the actor in it was a registered sex offender. Since the casting of the man in question was done by director Shane Black, who had a personal relationship with the man, a lot of heat has come down upon him. Last night, at the red carpet premiere of The Predator, Black apologized to everyone for everything that came about due to what he called an "irresponsible" error in judgment. Shane Black tells the Associated Press that as director of The Predator he was the captain of the ship and ultimately responsible for everything that happened. And he does take full responsibility. He understands that he made a serious error in hiring his friend Steven Wilder Striegel and putting him in a scene in the movie. While he does say that there were things he didn't know about the situation that shocked him, he doesn't use that as an excuse, he says it was his job to make sure those things don't happen, and in this case, he failed, causing pain to people in his cast.

He's also upset because, due to his error, this situation is now hanging over the movie, which means the cast and crew that helped make it can't enjoy their success as much. He does say he hopes he learns from this experience. If this apology is as genuine as it sounds, he almost certainly will.

All of this transpired just about a week ago, when Olivia Munn, who shared the one scene that Steven Wilder Striegel appeared in, learned of his history as a sex offender. She brought the information to studio 20th Century Fox, who made the decision to cut the scene ahead of The Predator's premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Frequently, we see public apologies like this get defensive or attempt explanations or justifications. We certainly don't see that here which is a welcome change of pace. Shane Black clearly understands he made a big mistake in the eyes of his cast and the public in general. While this is potentially a much bigger mistake than the average person makes on a daily basis, and an apology alone might not be enough to clear up the issue in everybody's eyes, the apology is an important part of making things right and it's an indication that Black understands what he needs to do to earn back the trust of others.







So if Venom does well, Sony can conceivably build out its Spider-Man universe with other solo movies about related characters, like Silk, or even an esoteric villain like Kraven the Hunter.

1993 was a big year for Steven Spielberg as he created one of cinema's biggest blockbusters and most recognized masterpieces in the same year. Both Jurassic Park and Schindler's List were released that year. In order to get both movies out, Spielberg had to essentially work on both movies simultaneously, shooting Schindler's List in Poland while also approving post-production shots of Jurassic Park at the same time. Spielberg now says that having to deal with CGI dinosaurs in the evening after filming such an emotionally powerfully powerful film during the date ended up creating a great deal of resentment inside him. According to the director...

When I finally started shooting...in Poland, I had to go home about two or three times a week and get on a very crude satellite feed to Northern California...to be able to approve T-Rex shots," he remembered. "And it built a tremendous amount of resentment and anger that I had to do this, that I had to actually go from [the emotional weight of Schindler's List] to dinosaurs chasing jeeps, and all I could express was how angry that made me at the time. I was grateful later in June, though, but until then it was a burden.

It certainly had to be a sort of emotional whiplash on a daily basis as he went from the heavy and emotional story of the World War II Holocaust to a fantastical story of dinosaurs coming back to life. Steven Spielberg told an audience at the Tribeca Film Festival (via Entertainment Weekly) that when the script for Schindler's List finally came through after multiple rewrites, he knew he had to make the movie as soon as possible, it was clearly an important movie for him. So much so that it made his other big movie feel a lot less important.

Steven Spielberg does say that when Jurassic Park was released in June, it was easier to deal with. The massive box office that made the movie one of the biggest of all-time is likely to have that sort of an effect on a director. Following that, Schindler's List would win every award under the sun, including Best Picture at the Academy Awards and a Best Director award for Spielberg himself. While the Jurassic Park box office was probably well celebrated, the director admits there was little "celebrating" the Oscars for Schindler's List as the movie's weight was such that celebrating didn't feel like an option.

While making these two movies at the same time clearly took a toll on Steven Spielberg, making them both at the same time made it clear that he was one of the greatest directors who has ever lived.




I remember reading a long time ago that George Lucas was overseeing most of the editing (uncredited) on Jurassic Park while Steven was filming Schindler's List, but I haven't been able to find more recent information on that rumor.

Thanks To Spider-Man And Venom, Sony Had A Great End Of Year At The Movies

Last year was perhaps the biggest year yet for superhero movies, with titles from Fox, Disney, Warner Bros. and Sony all dropping and making a huge splash at the box office. Perhaps the most surprising and impressive performance came from Sony. Thanks to the one-two punch of Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the studio had an especially great end of the year at the movies, with revenue up 76%.

For the third-quarter of the fiscal year, which ended on December 31, 2018, Sony Pictures Entertainment reported theatrical revenue of $532 million, according to Media Play News. Thats up 76% from the $302 million in revenue Sony pulled in theatrically during Q3 of 2017. The film unit also increased its operating income from $93 million in Q3 2017 to $102 million last year.

The overall revenue for the October-December quarter at Sonys film division, which includes motion pictures as well as TV productions, licensing and media networks, jumped over $2.45 billion, up from 2017s $2.3 billion.

In Q3 of 2017, Blade Runner 2049 and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle drove the revenue for Sony Pictures theatrically, with $163 million and $329 million, respectively. In 2018, Sony had the Web-Slingers to thank for the studios increased success.

Venom broke records on the way to an $855 million worldwide box office, helped along the way by a phenomenal performance in China that pushed Sonys international box office to over $2 billion for the year. Venom didnt do all the work though, because the acclaimed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse racked up $255 million.

Thanks to the Marvel characters, Sony Pictures had a great third-quarter that showed growth over the year before. Beyond that though, it also set Sony up for success moving forward and made it quite clear that the Spider-Man characters should be an integral part of the studios box office strategy. After the success of Venom, Sony inked a multi-picture deal with IMAX that will ensure the studios major 2019 releases play in the pricier large-screen format.

Venoms performance also validated Sonys desire to create a shared cinematic universe around the character. Morbius probably wont be the next Venom, and the only real guaranteed success is likely Venom 2, but Ruben Fleischers films incredible box office puts Sony in a much better place than it was after The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

While Venom was the all-star for Sony, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse did its part as well. The film is still continuing to bring in audiences and is now over $340 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, with a March release in Japan, before Sonys fiscal year is over, still to come. It is also the deserving favorite to collect the Oscar for Best Animated Film at this months Oscars and now has a spinoff and sequel in the works.

All in all, Venom and Spider-Man helped Sony to a great end of the year at the movies, but their success could also portend more great years to come.

The move also reshaped the perception of the wider spin-off enterprise. Sony has always wanted to pivot into Spider-Man-lite rogue gallery movies, and are speeding ahead with Silver & Black following up Venom in 2019, and projects for three other characters all in stages of development.
