Skyscraper Reviews Are In, Heres What People Are Saying

Summer is the time for spectacle action movies and nothing looks to be trying to fit that bill more than Dwayne Johnson's Skyscraper. It's an old-fashioned action movie that sees obvious influences from franchises like Die Hard, and other "one man versus the world" style action movies. Based on the reviews, that have hit this morning ahead of the film's Friday release, Skyscraper is clearly NOT Die Hard. However, that doesn't mean that it isn't entirely without charm and significant entertainment value. Out own Conner Schwerdtfeger gave the film three stars and while he says it has its issues, it will satisfy the summer action fan...

Skyscraper isn't as good or exciting as the films that it pays homage to, but it's a refreshing change of pace to see a competently-made original summer action movie.

The Wrap is sure to mention that Skyscraper isn't a wholly original concept, but doesn't think that will be much of a problem for the audience looking for a good time.

You'll recognize the DNA of other movies here, but that familiarity won't interfere with the vertiginous thrills, the breathtaking stunts (and CG), and the near-constant state of adrenaline-fueled action.

Few reviews are entirely glowing regarding Skyscraper, but many of them accept that, while the movie may not be perfect, there is some enjoyable action to watch and some fun to be had. As is frequently the case, Dwayne Johnson himself gets a lot of the credit for carrying the audience through any weak spots in the film. As Variety humorously puts it...

This is escapism, pure and simple, and though the structure is rickety, by enlisting Johnson, Thurber ensures that his Skyscraper is built on solid Rock.

However, while most seem to think that Skyscraper is at least enough fun to get you through, others are less generous. Entertainment Weekly recognizes the two films that were clearly the primary inspiration for Skyscraper, but it doesn't think the new film does anything that those movies did that made them great.

A film that suggests what would happen if you took The Towering Inferno and Die Hard and stripped them of the qualities that made both work.

The roughest review comes from The New York Post, who gives the movie only a single star out of four, and thinks the screenplay is so derivative of those better films that it may have been written by an actual computer.

The whole film feels as if it's on autopilot, or maybe written by artificial intelligence that's been fed a steady diet of the Die Hard oeuvre, Speed, Das Boot, and, I'm guessing, The Towering Inferno. But like most AI facsimiles, this one can't come up with anything memorably human.

If you were hoping that Skyscraper was the next great action movie, it appears that isn't the case. It would seem that your enjoyment of the film may be dependant on your ability to enjoy the action without being bothered by a less than "rock" solid script. Skyscraper opens Friday.

Evangeline Lillys First Time Wearing The Wasp Costume Didnt Go Great

The last time we saw Evangeline Lilly's Hope van Dyne, she was over the moon. After all, her father, Michael Douglas' Dr. Hank Pym, had finally accepted her future as a costumed hero, and revealed a new prototype suit for her to wear. It makes for one of the best end credits scenes in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe... but it has a funny real world ending. As it turns out, Lilly's first time actually getting to wear the suit for her titular role in Ant-Man and The Wasp didn't exactly go perfectly, as she explained during an on-set interview:

The first time I put on the suit it didn't fit. [laughs] So it was very anticlimactic. It was like, 'This is gonna be... ugggh. This doesn't work. Why is my bum flat? I have a really good bum, guys! Come on. Work with me here.'

Evangeline Lilly shared this funny story when I was on set last year while Ant-Man and The Wasp was still filming down in Atlanta, Georgia. As part of a roundtable interview with a small group of other journalists, the actress was asked about her first time wearing the Wasp costume, and she shared that it wasn't the most memorable experience in the world. It turns out that it's pretty hard to nail a superhero get-up on the first try, and so it had to go back to the artisans and be reworked after the initial fitting.

They didn't exactly nail it on the second time either, however. The truth is that it took months of hard work to get the whole thing right, and the production even brought on a special seamstress to accentuate a certain aspect of the Wasp costume that Evangeline Lilly felt was important. Said the actress,

It was four months of in and out of suits, and fitting, and tweaking, and tapering at the right spots, and letting out at the right spots, and making everything fit like a glove to my body - which is very, very difficult. And our costume team are wildly talented people. We brought on this one particular seamstress, April [McCoy], who has worked with dancers before, and just has an uncanny sense of a woman's body, and what clothes need to do on that body to make it sing. She has miraculously made my legs look longer than they really are, which was one of my first requests [laughs].

It was clearly a lot of work for all involved, but as you can tell looking at the finished result in the Ant-Man and The Wasp trailers and various stills it was all worth it. When it was finally perfected, Evangeline Lilly absolutely loved the finished result, and told us that she tried to spend as much time in the suit as she possibly could. Said Lilly,

Once it was perfect, once the suit came to a place where I put it on and you could feel everyone in the room went, 'Oh, there she is,' that was fuckin' cool. [laughs] Then it was like they couldn't get it off of me. I was like, 'No, just let me wear it a little longer.' And I'm dancing around the room. I should've been fighting around the room, but I'm not actually the Wasp; I'm Evangeline Lilly. Hi, I dance.

Someone Found Guardians Of The Galaxy's Groot In Real Life, And The Internet Is Freaking Out

Since the release of the first Guardians of the Galaxy, Groot has risen among the ranks to become a fan-favorite character of the internet -- a fame the only skyrocketed after the appearance of Baby Groot. Soon, fans will see Groot in a whole new form: a moody teenager! Adolescent Groot (his canon correct name) will star in Avengers: Infinity War and will help stop Thanos from conquering the galaxy. Before that though, Groot has been spotted in real life as a suspiciously shaped cactus and the internet has reacted accordingly.

The ruckus began when the news channel Fox 10 Phoenix posted a picture of a cactus to their Facebook. While that might sound like a slow news day in Phoneix, the cactus bore more than a few similarities to the Marvel character Groot. Mostly, the two of them share similarly shaped heads and the cactus has the vague appearance of eyes and a mouth. It may look like Groot is doing a press tour in Phoenix to promote Avengers: Infinity War, but I assure you, it's just a cactus.

It's a fun photo and people on the internet are running with it. The post has 4.5 thousand likes and over 300 comments so far. One commenter on Facebook was quick to point out that this is actually Groot's lesser known brother, Prick. You can tell them apart because Prick says, "I am Prick!" and just wants to cuddle. However, being a cactus no one wants to get too close, which makes him pretty lonely (gotta have that tragic Marvel backstory). Other people have pointed out that his cactus arm (I don't know the technical term) looks like a penis.

So, people have got Groot fever, which should serve the character well for his upcoming appearance in Avengers: Infinity War. We don't know the exact size of his role, but I wouldn't expect it to be too deep. However, this will be the first real showing of his teenage personality, so he likely will be providing plenty of laughs at least.

Infinity War's plot has been kept mostly under wraps but we do know from trailers and officially released images that Groot will be on a mission with Thor and Rocket Raccoon. As to what they could be doing, I won't spoil it for those who may not know, but rest assured it's pretty cool.

We'll be able to see Groot (but not Prick) in Avengers: Infinity War, which is put in theaters on April 27 in a little less than the longest two weeks of your life.
