The Uncharted Movie Has Finally Found A New Director

Last year, director Shawn Levy signed on to produce and direct the action-comedy Free Guy with star Ryan Reynolds. That created a scheduling conflict with Uncharted, which Shawn Levy was previously set to direct, necessitating a new helmer for the long in-development video game adaptation. Now the Uncharted movie has tapped Dan Trachtenberg to take over as the new director:

Dan Trachtenberg is best known for directing 10 Cloverfield Lane, and Sony has been wanting to work with him since that thriller came out in 2016, according to Variety. Unlike Shawn Levy, who has a bevy of big screen credits to his name like Night at the Museum, Real Steel and This is Where I Leave You, this will be only Dan Trachtenberg's second feature.

Dan Trachtenberg did, however, direct the virtual reality-themed episode of Black Mirror titled Playtest, as well as the video game short Portal: No Escape. So one could surmise he has some knowledge and affinity for the world of video games. He also helmed the pilot for the comic book adaptation The Boys for Amazon.

Uncharted is based on the Playstation video game series of the same name that began in 2007 and follows the adventures of treasure hunter Nathan Drake, who is like a modern day Indiana Jones. The feature film adaptation is set to divert from the video games by featuring a young Nathan Drake and his first encounter with his mentor and partner-in-crime, Sully. Spider-Man actor Tom Holland is still attached to play Nathan Drake.

Jonathan Rosenberg and Mark Walker wrote the most recent draft of the script that was once worked on by The Grey director Joe Carnahan. There isn't a firm start date on Uncharted's production, as it will have to wait until after Tom Holland finishes up the press tour for the Sony's Spider-Man: Far From Home. But with a director now on board, the studio is hoping to start rolling before the end of the year.

The story around most video game movies is how bad they are, but the story around the adaptation of Uncharted is more akin to that of The Crow reboot because despite regular rumblings, it never seems to actually happen. The Uncharted movie has been in some stage of development for a decade, and at one point was set to star Mark Wahlberg.

Dan Trachtenberg is only the latest in a long line of directors that has included David O'Russell, Neil Burger, Seth Gordon and Shawn Levy. But through all of the directors and rewrites, Uncharted has remained lost. Perhaps the hiring of Dan Trachtenberg will change that. Given his limited resume, it's hard to know what exactly Dan Trachtenberg will bring to Uncharted, but he directed the best Cloverfield movie, so that much is encouraging.

How To Train Your Dragon 3 Has Screened, Here Are The Early Reactions

The How To Train Your Dragon films have been two of the most popular animated movies in recent memory. Both movies have been major hits with critics and fans and have put serious box office numbers up as well. This makes the pressure all the greater for the third entry, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, which has a lot to live up to. Luckily, for fans, it appears that the end of the trilogy is going to be everything they want it to be. A handful of critics have now seen the movie, and they all seem to love it, to varying degrees. As Variety puts it...

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World packs the emotional heft of the dozen or so years it has taken to get this far, tracking the loss of one parent, the discovery of another, and several momentous lessons in bravery and loyalty along the way.

That certainly makes it sound like the film is going to have all the emotional punch that fans of the two previous entries would be expecting. While Dreamworks Animation might not get the credit that a studio like Pixar has when it comes to tugging at the heartstrings with animated films, the Dragon films have certainly done that for many people.

The Wrap puts The Hidden World on par with Toy Story 3. While being forced to admit that financial success might have been the initial motivating factor for producing both films, that didn't stop their respective studios from creating films that were the best in the series with the third installment.

Writer-director Dean DeBlois caps his emotionally intelligent adaptation of the Vikings-and-dragons book series with an enjoyable, beautiful story of destiny and freedom.

The How to Train Your Dragon movies have, thus far, been some of well regarded in recent memory. Both previous films have over 90% scores on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The two films together have made over $1 billion at the global box office. In fact, New Zealand's Stuff, says that with the new movie included, the series is one of the best trilogies in years.

Rivaled only by the Weta-infused Apes as the best trilogy of the current decade, How to Train Your Dragon completes its triptych with a fitting final flourish.

One thing that does seem clear based on the reviews that are in, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is a movie that knows it's the end of a story and is going to take full advantage of this fact. Based on Indiewire's description, we probably shouldn't be expecting a fourth installment to come along.

The Hidden World strikes a bittersweet chord in reminding its young audience that all good things - including the age of dragons - must come to an end.

This certainly makes it seem like The Hidden World won't have the sort of ending where everybody wins and lives happily ever after. While it's not uncommon for the end of a trilogy to result in some sort of loss, even when it's right for the story, it can still be a serious kick in the emotional core. THR strikes a similar chord to Indiewire, strongly implying that the audience might want to pack tissues when going to see The Hidden World. It really sounds like you'll need them.

All told, by the time How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World nears the end of its Harry Potter-esque closing trajectory, in which Hiccup must learn how to let go, the bittersweet result will have audiences finding it equally hard to say goodbye.

You can't really have much more glowing reviews than these. A few months ago producer Steven Spielberg certainly gave the impression that this movie was going to be something special, and based on the response thus far, he wasn't wrong. The only problem with them for most fans is likely that the movie is still nearly two months away.

All that love isn't to say the new movie is absolutely perfect. The Film Pie says that while, on balance, the film is still good, it has a tendency to go off the rails a bit here and there.

The Hidden World is a little too chaotic in places but there's more than enough heart and sentimentality, particularly during the finale, to win over audiences.

The real weak link in the film, according to this review, is that the villain of the piece, voiced by Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham, is a bit too one-dimensional, though apparently not enough to ruin the film.

Similarly, Screen Daily feels that while The Hidden World is certainly still a good movie, it doesn't really do anything new with this third installment of the franchise. It seems that after Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, all other animated features are going to need to up their game, and visually it simply doesn't do that.

Eight years on, the How to Train Your Dragon films might not break any new aesthetic ground... but they remain as vibrant as ever.

Being the first animated feature coming out after Into the Spider-Verse was certainly going to be a tough place to be. Still, it seems that The Hidden World has held its own about as well as could be expected. It may not have the visual style, but it makes up for it with heart. Although, as we move forward you can be pretty certain that all animation studios have taken note of Miles Morales and will be adjusting their approach accordingly.

While How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World may not be a perfect movie, thus far it's certainly reviewing that way. This will be great news for those who have been invested in the first two and excited for this new third installment.

For those of you who have somehow completely missed this franchise, you still have time to catch up on the first two before the trilogy completes. How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World will be in theaters February 22.

How Candyman's Jordan Peele And Director Nia DaCosta Bonded Through Horror Fandom

This past weekend saw the phenomenal release of Jordan Peeles Us, and the good news for those already hungry for more horror stories from the filmmaker is that he has many irons in the fire. For example, there is the new version of The Twilight Zone that he is producing and hosting for CBS All Access but on the feature side of things there is the tremendously exciting new take on Candyman that he is making with writer/director Nia DaCosta.

News of DaCostas hiring came just a couple months after the announcement about the projects development late last year, and also just a few months after the world premiere of her feature debut, Little Woods (which played at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival). In the time since, not much has been revealed about the direction of the new Candyman, but while sitting down with DaCosta this past weekend, I learned about a key ingredient in her collaboration with Jordan Peele:

I think something that we connect on a lot was the way we view horror, and our love of horror. I love Candyman, but also just like breaking down what horror is, how it's represented, what it means, and why it's important. I think we really connected on that, and so that's a lot of what our conversations have been about that I can tell you (laughs). It's been great. He's a wonderful creator, collaborator, human, artist.

With the film set to be released in a few weeks, Little Woods held its Los Angeles press day on Sunday, and it was at the end of my interview with Nia DaCosta and star/executive producer Tessa Thompson that I inquired about the development of her upcoming horror remake. Specifically I asked about the conversations that she had been having with Jordan Peele, and she explained how a shared vision of what horror can do and why its effective is really driving their work together on Candyman.

Naturally I felt compelled to follow-up by asking about her philosophy in the genre, and what she stressed was both engaging with the audience, and also telling stories that bring home important messages in subversive ways. Its a key staple of horror that has existed from the beginning, and a tradition that Nia DaCosta plans to uphold in her venture. Said the filmmaker,

What I like about genres like thrillers, and why I think tensions are important for all movies, including dramas, it's physicalizing what the characters are feeling for the audience. That's really important, and gets the audience to engage and to lean in. And then with horror you can sneak in messages. You know sneak in what you think about the world around you, and how actually horrifying the world is. You get to hide it in these layers. 'This is about a ghost, but really it's about paranoia and a woman's place in the world.' Or, you know, 'This is about a guy meeting his girlfriend's parents, but really it's about... Actually a guy meeting his girlfriend's parents.' (laughs)

Based on a short story by Clive Barker that was first adapted in 1992, Candyman centers on an urban legend that is being investigated by a college student specifically one about a violent entity who appears and attacks anyone who dares to say his name five times into a mirror. Yahya Abdul-Matten II, who has earned notoriety in recent months thanks to his performance in James Wans Aquaman and Jordan Peeles Us, is currently the only member of the cast, set to play the titular villain.

With Nia DaCosta directing and Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld writing the script, Candyman is currently on track to be released on June 12, 2020 produced by Monkeypaw Productions and MGM. For those of you who want to get a taste of what DaCosta is bringing to the table as a filmmaker, however, (and I highly recommend that you do), Little Woods is set up with distribution from Neon, and will be getting a limited release starting on April 19th.

Rian Johnson And Mark Hamill Defend Star Wars Kelly Marie Tran After She Deletes Social Media

After acting in various short films and TV shows, Kelly Marie Tran finally got her big break when she was cast as Rose Tico in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Her time as the Resistance mechanic paired with John Boyega's Finn introduced her to a lot of moviegoers, but five months after the film's release, she has deleted all of her posts off of Instagram. While not confirmed, Tran's decision is reportedly due to being harassed by trolls, namely certain Star Wars fans who didn't like The Last Jedi and/or her character. With this in mind, both director Rian Johnson and Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, came to her defense, with Johnson saying:

Done with this disingenuous bullshit. You know the difference between not liking a movie and hatefully harassing a woman so bad she has to get off social media. And you know which of those two we're talking about here.

While Rian Johnson had previously acknowledged on Twitter that while "few unhealthy people can cast a big shadow on the wall" on social media, he then noted that the "vast majority" of Star Wars fans he'd interacted with on social media are respectful and have offered their opinions with love. But when someone tried to clarify (in a since-deleted tweet) what they'd said earlier regarding the Kelly Marie Tran situation, Johnson clapped back with the above statement, making it clear that just because you don't like a movie doesn't mean it's okay to harass one of its actors.

Rian Johnson is clearly someone who has to be aware of the ire of the internet following Star Wars: The Last Jedi's big release last winter. While the movie was a box office and a critical success, there have been members of the fanbase who have been very vocal about their respective dislikes for the movie. Johnson has seemingly taken most of it in stride and has stayed on social media following the release of his Star Wars movie, but he did reveal the other day that he has "started blocking assholes" online, in order to avoid dealing with nonsense on social media. It's easy to see how he can empathize with his cast members getting harassed online.

Speaking of those actors, Mark Hamill took a simpler approach in order to stand up for Kelly Marie Tran by posting a picture of him with his co-star and offering a brief retort at the trolls.

He's not the only actor to do so, either. A few days later, John Boyega also jumped onto the bandwagon. While he didn't mention Kelly Marie Tran by name, he made it very clear that harassing the people involved is uncool. Not to mention, he also notes that it won't do much of anything other than be hurtful to the actors, because they aren't the actual decision-makers in the Star Wars universe.

Again, we don't know with 100% certainty why Kelly Marie Tran decided to scrub her Instagram page clean, but the actress has certainly dealt with some ire both before and after Star Wars: The Last Jedi's release. Correlations have been made because Kelly Marie Tran did receive her fair share comments online, and because other Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley also deleted social media previously. In Ridley's case, it was following an instance where she shared a post about victims of gun violence. The actress later called online interactions "highly unhealthy for people's mental health." Correlations have been made between Daisy Ridley's social media exit and Kelly Marie Tran's, and it looks as if other people involved with Disney and Lucasfilm also believe that led to the actress quitting Instagram.

Whether or not you were personally invested in the character, Rose Tico was one of the most important new additions to the movie, as she and Finn traveled to Canto Bight to find a slicer who could help them sabotage The First Order's tracking device. Granted, their mission ultimately ended in disaster, but thanks to Rose, Finn didn't die in the battle on Crait, which was ultimately an important moment in the movie.

As for The Last Jedi as a whole, as previously mentioned, it collected over $1.3 billion worldwide, yet has definitely turned into one of the most polarizing Star Wars movies to date, and that's even in comparison to the Prequel Trilogy. Angry Star Wars fans have had plenty of complaints about Star Wars: The Last Jedi, including Leia floating through space and the reveal about Rey's parents. (Or lack thereof, really.) We've compiled a list of the biggest complaints, here.

With a year and a half to go until the J.J. Abrams-directed Episode IX, it's doubtful that the arguments online over the movie's quality will die down anytime soon. Regardless, perhaps things will quiet down to the point where there is not so much directed at the people who have brought major Star Wars characters to life on the big screen.

We don't know a ton about Episode IX yet. Indeed, we don't even know what the movie will be subtitled. It also remains to be seen if Kelly Marie Tran will reprise Rose Tico for Star Wars: Episode IX, although her inclusion in the next movie would make sense, as she was presented as an important new character in the movies. Still, we'll be sure to let you know once we hear anything one way or the other. The current Star Wars trilogy will conclude on December 20, 2019 with Star Wars: Episode IX.
