Two More Marvel Characters Reportedly Survived Thanos Snap

With the snap of his Infinity Gauntleted fingers, Thanos changed the course of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in an instant. Thanks to the power of the six Infinity Stones, he was finally able to bring forth his vision of true balance in the universe at the end of Avengers: Infinity War by wiping out half of all life, and the surviving half must now adapt with a radically-altered reality. Apparently we can count Stellan Skarsgrd's Dr. Erik Selvig and Kat Dennings' Darcy Lewis, two of Thor's allies, among these lucky survivors.

Avengers: Infinity War came out in theaters seven months ago and has been available on home media for nearly four full months, but the events of that movie are still heavily looming in Marvel fans' minds, and a new book, titled Avengers: Infinity War: The Cosmic Quest Volume Two: Aftermath, will give them a look into life after the Thanos snap. The book follows Erik Selvig and Darcy Lewis trying to find and understand the cause of this genocide, which will take them on a journey to learn about the Infinity Stones. Unfortunately for them, a new foe who "threatens to destroy them all is looming," because of course there is. Why should their investigation into these powerful artifacts be easy?

This is the third Avengers: Infinity War tie-in book to be released this year, following Thanos: Titan Consumed, which explored the purple warlord's origins, and The Cosmic Quest Volume One: Beginnings, which followed The Collector getting his bearings following his run-in with the Guardians of the Galaxy and dealing with his brother, The Grandmaster, after the events of Thor: Ragnarok. It is important to note, however, that Thanos: Titan Consumed was clarified to be non-canon within the MCU despite being a tie-in. Maybe that's not the case with The Cosmic Quest Volume Two: Aftermath, but unless Erik Selvig and Darcy Lewis appear in Avengers 4 intact, we won't know for sure whether they are indeed still alive in the official MCU timeline.

We know for a fact that Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, a Hulk-less Bruce Banner, Black Widow, War Machine, Rocket Raccoon, Nebula, Okoye and M'Baku made it out of Avengers: Infinity War alive, as did Ant-Man, which was revealed in the Ant-Man and the Wasp mid-credits scene. Hawkeye and Captain Marvel also survived since they're important players in Avengers 4, and characters like Shuri and Pepper Potts are confirmed to be showing up through interviews or behind-the-scenes leaks. But there are still plenty of other supporting MCU characters whose fates remain a mystery, though for now, you're welcome to assume Erik Selvig and Darcy Lewis aren't dust.

Erik and Darcy both debuted in 2011's Thor alongside Natalie Portman's Dr. Jane Foster. The trio were in New Mexico doing astrophysics research when they stumbled across a powerless Thor being exiled on Earth by Odin, the Asgardian All-Father. Initially they didn't know what to make of Thor, with Erik specifically pointing out the weirdness of this strange bearded man spouting out snippets of Norse mythology. However, once The Destroyer arrived in that New Mexico town and Thor was deemed worthy enough to wield Mjolnir again, then they realized he was the real deal.

While Darcy returned in Thor: The Dark World and continued being comedic relief, Erik Selvig not only returned for that movie, but The Avengers beforehand and Avengers: Age of Ultron afterwards. His scientific prowess was most helpful during the MCU's first two phases, although unfortunately after being mind-controlled by Loki in The Avengers and forced to help bring the Chitauri to Earth, Erik became mentally unstable, thus resulting in him having his own humorous moments in The Dark World. Thankfully, he seemed to have (mostly) recovered by the time Age of Ultron rolled around, and he accompanied Thor to the Water of Sights and was recruited to work at the New Avengers Facility.

However, until The Cosmic Quest Volume Two: Aftermath, we had no idea what was going on with either of those characters, or Jane Foster for that matter. Because Thor: Ragnarok primarily took place on Asgard and Sakaar, there wasn't any time to check in on Thor's friends during the brief period on Earth. Jane Foster was only briefly mentioned to have dumped Thor, explaining why the woman who was last seen passionately kissing the God of Thunder wasn't involved in his life anymore. It's ok, we had Hulk, Doctor Strange, Hela and Grandmaster to make up for all that.

Given how jam-packed Avengers 4 is already, I suspect that Erik Selvig and Darcy Lewis won't be appearing in it. Thor is most definitely participating in the Phase 3 capper, but one would imagine he's going to have his hands busy like every other superhero. Still, if you want to assume that The Cosmic Quest Volume Two: Aftermath is canon, then at least now there's a way to learn about what they're doing in the post-Infinity War landscape. Just because they're not directly involved in the fight against the Mad Titan doesn't mean they're not doing important work.

As for Avengers 4, with a little over six months to go until the movie's release, Marvel Studios still hasn't provided any official details about the story. The Quantum Realm is said to play a key role in the movie, and there are rumors and speculation aplenty about how it fits into the big picture, like the heroes time traveling through this other dimension to undo this genocide, or how the "souls" of the people who were turned to dust are trapped there. But aside from knowing most of the main cast members, we remain in the dark on what to expect from Avengers 4, and there's still no word on when the first official images or the teaser trailer will arrive.

Avengers 4 opens in theaters on May 3, 2019, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for continuing coverage. In the meantime, feel free to look through our 2019 release schedule to find out what other movies are coming out next year.

Why The New Grinch Movie Is Better Than The Jim Carrey One

Why The New Grinch Movie Is Better Than The Jim Carrey One

Warning: there are SPOILERS for The Grinch ahead!

Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas! has been a Christmas season staple for decades, and for a long time, there were two ways to enjoy the tale: read the original book or watch the animated 1966 TV special starring Boris Karloff. That changed in 2000 with the release of the live action How The Grinch Stole Christmas movie, and nearly two decades later, now there's a fourth option available in the CGI movie known simply as The Grinch.

Let's get this out of the way immediately: neither of the theatrical movies can compare to the original Grinch book and TV special. Those both tell the core story, and while short, they're unquestionably still beloved by many. Having said that, between the two theatrical versions, I firmly believe that The Grinch, i.e. the one from Illumination Entertainment, handles the source material better than its live action predecessor. If you have to pick one or the other to sit kids in front of, this latest movie is the one to choose.

I should note that I'm actually a fan of the Jim Carrey Grinch movie, unlike many other people, as I've learned in recent years. It was a tall order turning Dr. Seuss' original tale into a full-length feature, and naturally that meant taking creative liberties. From a visual standpoint, this movie looks excellent, from the makeup for Carrey's Grinch and the other Whos to the weird architecture and curvy designs of their everyday objects. And without Carrey as the lead, this movie wouldn't have been nearly as good. I still find myself quoting some of his perfectly-delivered lines throughout the year ("Kids today. So desensitized by movies and television.")

But what's working against the live action Grinch movie, particularly in comparison to the new CGI version, is the subject matter. For one thing, the backstory about why the Grinch hates the Whos isn't that compelling, particularly since he was already showing sadistic tendencies as an infant. There's also the fact that the Whos (most of whom are unlikable, Cindy Lou being the big exception) are obsessed with the commercialism of Christmas, and while the Whos ultimately learn the true meaning of Christmas, which is what should happen, the fact that they learn this lesson minutes before the Grinch does just feels weird.

Let's not even delve too deeply into the humor that's clearly not intended for young ones. For example, remember how on the night Baby Grinch arrived in Whoville, the sisters who would become his adoptive parents were having a key party? Seriously! Oh well, at least this movie''s content wasn't anywhere near as atrocious as what was in The Cat in the Hat. That one was rough.

Illumination Entertainment's The Grinch, on the other hand, in addition to being visually dazzling in its own special way, has a steadier and more faithful grip on How The Grinch Stole Christmas! and has more of a sense of childlike wonder. Starting off, the Whos and Whoville much more closely the ones from the original tale. Sure they're still keen on going all out on decorating and making a spectacle of the holiday season, but that comes secondary to the presents and enjoying one another's company. Subsequently, Cindy Lou's side story is more interesting to watch, as she's not interested in learning the true meaning of Christmas (which has frankly become cliched), but wants to trap Santa Claus so that she can ask him to do something nice for her overworked mom.

Grinch's backstory is also much more compelling in his new movie. In this version of events, he basically grew up alone in an orphanage; he's not considered an outcast among the Whos because of the way he looks, but is nonetheless distant from them. Because of his depressing childhood and not being able to celebrate Christmas with everyone else, it makes sense by the time he gets out of the orphanage and makes his new home on Mount Crumpet, he wouldn't want anything to do with Christmas. As Grinch (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) acknowledges at the end of the movie, he associated the holiday with loneliness.

On the humor side of things, The Grinch feels like it will stand the test of time better than its live action predecessor. There are a few jokes and gags in there that are a little too "modern" (like Grinch wearing exercise pants with writing on the butt), overall the laughs feel timeless. And for those of you particularly protective regarding what your children watch, The Grinch is also more family-friendly, i.e. you won't find any subtle, adult-oriented humor buried in there.

All of this isn't to say that The Grinch doesn't have issues or problems. Like the Jim Carrey version, the narrator (this time Pharrell Williams) recites original poetry with that Seuss feel, which by itself isn't a bad thing. But when Grinch heads to Whoville disguised as Santa Claus to steal Christmas, then it starts to abandon the traditional Seuss formula and reaches its ending in a slightly different way. As stated earlier, creative liberties are to be expected with an adaptation, especially of a short story, but this choice feels a little too divergent from what came before.

Along with the latter half of The Grinch dragging, there's also an instance where, like in the live action movie, Grinch shows signs of decency long before his heart grows three sizes, like when he lets his pet reindeer Fred go back to its family. This pays off in the climax, but it softens the ultimate impact of seeing him reform. The anti-commercialism message at the end is also slightly toned down, and while we still get to see Grinch enjoy the holiday with his new friends at the end, the moral that Dr. Seuss was passing on in the original How The Grinch Stole Christmas! is diluted.

Overall though, The Grinch feels closer in spirit to the story Dr. Seuss gave us than the live action movie did. Who knows if decades from now another studio will give us yet another live action or animated version of How The Grinch Stole Christmas, but as things stand now, Illumination Entertainment has delivered the cinematic adaptation. But again, there are enjoyable elements from the Jim Carrey version, and there's nothing to say that you can't enjoy all of these Grinch stories. The CGI movie just has the edge between the two in terms of appealing to the widest audience possible.

You can judge The Grinch for yourself now in theaters, and be sure to read CinemaBlend's review of the movie. Don't forget to look through our holiday movie guide to learn what movies are coming out in the final weeks of this year, as well as our 2019 release schedule to get an early start preparing for your theatrical experiences next year.

There are now two theatrical Grinch movies to watch, and here's why the latest, CGI version is better than the live action, Jim Carrey-led one.
Why The New Grinch Movie Is Better Than The Jim Carrey One

In 2000, Universal Pictures had the audacity to create a brand new, live-action version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas and stretched the story to over an hour longer than the animated tale.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000 film) - Wikipedia

Peter Stack of the San Francisco Chronicle said, "Nobody could play the Grinch better than Jim Carrey, whose rubbery antics and maniacal sense of mischief are so well suited to How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Dr. Seuss himself might have turned to Carrey as a model for the classic curmudgeon had the actor been around in 1957."

The Grinch, the new animated movie featuring Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of Grinch, is better than the Jim Carrey version from 2000. It should be stated right off the bat that the 2000 live-action version, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, starring Carrey in the central role and directed by Ron Howard, is by no means bad.

Carrey's Grinch Has A Better Origin In the new film, the Grinch's backstory fails to forge an emotional connection between the audience and Cumberbatch's bitter character. We learn he was abandoned at a Whoville orphanage, and grew up without ever receiving a gift, or experiencing Christmas.

Viktor Drago Is Terrifying In New Creed II Video

Viktor Drago Is Terrifying In New Creed II Video

Creed II will find Michael B. Jordan's Adonis Creed seeking to avenge his father by defeating the son of the man who killed him in the ring. In Viktor Drago, Adonis faces an opponent who may be even more deadly than the man who killed his father, the Siberian Express, Ivan Drago. A new video for Creed II hammers this point home, showing Florian Munteanu's positively terrifying boxer who, like his father before him, looks unbeatable. Take a look.

Yeah, Adonis has his work cut out for him, although just getting in the ring with that dude is a moral victory if you believe in those. Like the actor playing him, Viktor Drago is a tall 6'4" and a massive 245 lbs and he completely dwarfs Michael B. Jordan's character, similar to how Sylvester Stallone's Rocky Balboa looked like he wasn't even close to being in the same weight class as Dolph Lundgren's Russian.

That size alone is a lot for Adonis to overcome, not to mention Drago's lengthy 79" reach. More than just being a shredded giant, this video from MGM shows Viktor Drago to have an insane level of athleticism and some seriously scary power. He looks like he could starch a rhinoceros with one punch.

At the end of the video, we can see the look of pure bewilderment on Adonis' face after taking a mean left hook from the Russian. He has clearly never taken a shot like that and he will have to dig deep and absorb punishment like he's never experienced if he hopes to stand a chance against such a terrifying force.

The other thing that comes across in this video and in the trailers for Creed II is that while Viktor Drago possesses the same intimidating size and skill that gave Rocky such problems, he did not inherit his father's stoicism. Ivan was like a cold, unfeeling machine, designed for victory and to break people as a matter of routine, with no emotion attached to the act.

Viktor is something else entirely. In the trailer, Rocky tells Adonis that Viktor was raised in hate. We know that life was very hard for Ivan Drago after his loss to Rocky. Those struggles lead to anger, and as a wise master once said, anger leads to hate and hate leads to suffering. We see what that hate has created and it looks as if it will bef Adonis who will be suffering.

Viktor seems full of rage with a ferocity and intensity that would probably defeat most opponents mentally before they ever set foot in the ring with him. I'm not sure that this grudge match will end with the same unifying message about change that Rocky once espoused, thus ending the Cold War.

Round 1 begins when Creed II hits theaters on November 21st. Check out our holiday movie guide to get the rundown on all of the sequels, blockbusters and awards contenders headed to theaters and for all the latest in reminders to get back to the gym, stay tuned to CinemaBlend.
