Tom Hanks Wanted To Cameo In Solo: A Star Wars Story

There were some pretty big celebrity cameos filmed for Star Wars: The Last Jedi and previous films in the universe. Although not all of them ended up making the movies, the big names involved were still something fun to talk about leading up to release. However, Solo: A Star Wars Story opted to take a different tact. In a recent interview, Ron Howard revealed that the latest Star Wars movie doesn't feature any big cameos from a-listers; however, he did say that at one point Tom Hanks expressed interest in showing up. Per the director:

We really don't. Tom Hanks was interested in being a Stormtrooper, but he's -- it would have been great -- he was shooting, and he just couldn't get there. Now that Lucasfilm knows that Hanks is interested, I'm sure they'll work it out someday.

Ah scheduling conflicts, the bane of many a movie's existence. Per what Ron Howard told JOE.ie, Howard spoke with Tom Hanks, who starred in The Da Vinci Code and subsequent sequels, Angels & Demons and Inferno, about doing a small cameo in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Ron Howard picked up the production of Solo last July, after previous directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired from the movie. The movie then underwent extensive reshoots, including letting Michael K. Williams go (also due to scheduling conflicts) and signing on Marvel's Paul Bettany. Along the way, a lot of decisions had to be discussed and made, and one of those apparently had to do with the affable Hanx.

Tom Hanks does a lot of producing work these days in addition to his acting gigs, but during the time Solo: A Star Wars Story was still coming together, Steven Spielberg and co. were also working on The Post, a movie that started production in May of 2017. By November, Spielberg had the film edited, and it came out in time for the Christmas holiday. I'm assuming that it was somewhere within that time frame that Ron Howard and Tom Hanks were trying to get the cameo to work, and boy, would it have been a good one. Still, if Tom Hanks was interested beyond working with Howard for a cameo, perhaps it's something we'll get to see down the line. The closest Solo gets to a celebrity "cameo" -- and minor spoiler -- is not really a cameo at all, as it's bringing back Warwick Davis in the same role he played in The Phantom Menace.

If you are interested in cameos, Star Wars: The Last Jedi famously filmed a scene with Tom Hardy that was cut. Prince William and Prince Harry also filmed cameos; those were cut, too. So, there are hazards to filming cameos, and even those celebrities who do film cameos aren't always guaranteed to have their moment in the film. Have you ever imagined the iconic line Run Forrest Run being said in Hindi, perhaps as the titular character starts off an extravagant musical number? Life really is like a box of chocolates, because an upcoming Forrest Gump movie will be the latest Hollywood hit to be remade by Bollywood.

The 1994 Best Picture winner has caught the eye of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, who will take on the Tom Hanks role and co-produce an Indian version of the movie to be titled Lal Singh Chaddha, per Variety. The remake will be developed by both Viacom 18 Motion Pictures and Khans production company.

Aamir Khan explained during the press announcement in Mumbai that he has always loved the Forrest Gump script, complementing the Oscar winners life-affirming story that is a feel good film for the whole family. The superstar hopes to come back from his 2018 commercial failure Thugs of Hindostan, the highest-budget Bollywood film ever, which lost big at the box office after many negative reviews.

The Bollywood stars movies put together has also made the most at the box office worldwide than any other Indian actor. So it makes sense for Aamir Khan to take on the role famously played by Americas sweetheart, Tom Hanks, of course!

The recent announcement of the Indian Forrest Gump also came with the productions plans to start filming this October and be released in 2020. It would certainly be interesting to see how Bollywood adapts the film, which has draws on many moments in American history such as Elvis Presley, the Vietnam War, racial desegregation, Watergate and Apple computers. Will the movie take on the events of the American film or draw on elements of Indian history?

The foreign genre is known for its huge song-and-dance numbers and melodrama, and some aspects of Forrest Gump certainly can be translated this way. Its a larger-than-life story with a mix of romance, drama and comedy, and it would be a blast to see this kind of retelling.

India has remade tons of Hollywood movies in the past including Ms. Doubtfire, Christopher Nolans Memento, Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, When Harry Met Sally and another Tom Hanks led movie, Big. The genre certainly seems to be fans of what the industry in America has produced and keeps finding inspiration by them.

Some actors are known for playing certain types of roles. Dwayne Johnson plays musclebound badasses, Vince Vaughn portrays fast-talking con men with funny streaks, and Denzel Washington has made a career out of bringing dominant and commanding presences to his roles. One of the few times that he didn't play a role like that came in Dan Gilroy's Roman J. Israel Esq., and in a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Gilroy explained that this is one of the critical reasons why Washington earned his 2018 Best Actor nomination. Gilroy elaborated:

I believe, and I believe he believes as well, It's the most transformative performance of his career in the sense that he is playing something at this point in his career that he's never played before remotely a character like this. He has to literally transform himself, not just physically, but internally as well, to become something which he has never been before. And he does something which, to me, is the hallmark of all great performances, which is very quickly you forget that you're watching a movie star and you just feel like you're watching a character. And I think, I think Denzel does that to a very high degree in this film. And really, he's transformed himself in a very organic, really authentic way. And I think that's what he's being recognized for.

It's no secret that Denzel Washington has played a variety of different roles over the years in films like Crimson Tide, Remember the Titans, and Fences. All of these movies required different characters with different emotional cores, but each one possesses a similarly dominant and powerful presence that carries over from film to film. With Roman J. Israel Esq., Dan Gilroy asserts that Denzel Washington finally dove into a far more timid and less self-assured character than we have ever seen from him before.

Part of that transformation has to do with the type of character that Roman is, but another layer involves that physical transformation that Denzel Washington committed himself to for playing Roman. Not only did the 63-year-old actor gain a significant amount of weight for the film, but he also had a dental cap at the front of his mouth removed to give Roman his signature gap between his teeth. Put all that together, and this really is Denzel like we've never seen him before.
