First Look At Renee Zellweger As Judy Garland Is Perfect

We've known for several months now that Renee Zellweger would be playing Judy Garland in an upcoming biopic about The Wizard of Oz actress' life. Zellweger landed the gig back in October of 2017, but now the movie is coming together, and we've gotten our first look at Zellweger playing the actress in Judy. Honestly, she very much looks the part. Take a look, below.

As the studio image notes, this week Judy is starting principal photography in London. As you can see from the image, Judy is singing in the picture, which fits in with the premise of the biopic. The movie is expected to follow Judy Garland's last tour as a singer back in 1969. She performed that year at the Talk of the Town nightclub in London, so it makes sense the movie would be filming in the famous city. The movie will look at her sold-out shows, as well as her relationships, including within her personal life, and with her management and her fans.

In real life, following the five-week run of concerts in London, Garland did a show in Copenhagen, Denmark, got married to her fifth husband Mickey Deans and finally was found dead in her bathtub on June 22, 1969.

Tom Edge, who has written episodes of Netflix's The Crown, also wrote Judy. Pathe will be distributing the movie internationally, and Cameron McCracken, Rose Garnett, and Andrea Scarso are executive producing the project. Rupert Goold is signed on as the director of the film. A previous project about Judy Garland was in the works years ago with Anne Hathaway attached, but this movie seems to be going in a different direction.

Judy should be a particularly cool project for Renee Zellweger, who hasn't taken on as many memorable roles in recent years. The actress has previously said that she needed to take a break from Hollywood because she was "craving normalcy," although she did return to Tinseltown to play the popular character Bridget Jones in the 2016 flick Bridget Jones's Baby. In fact, it looks like Zellweger will definitely be singing while playing Judy Garland, which should mark the first time she's taken on a full-blown musical role since she played Roxie Hart in the 2002 movie Chicago.

As for Judy, the movie will also star American Horror Story's Finn Wittrock as Judy Garland's fifth husband Mickey Deans. Rufus Sewell will play the famed Sidney Luft, Judy Garland's third husband who has also been credited for her comeback in A Star is Born. Michael Gambon will play Talk of the Town club manager Bernard Delfont, who signed Garland for the gig. Jessie Buckley will play an assistant at Talk of the Town, Rosalyn Wilder. The movie doesn't have an official release date yet, but currently seems to be expected to come out in 2018. We'll definitely keep you updated as we get more looks at the world in 1969 and the memorable characters in Judy.

How The Russo Brothers Thanked Marvel's Fans As The Avengers: Endgame Trailer Dropped

Waiting for a trailer to drop on any Marvel film is an exercise in patience. But with Avengers: Endgame's revealing the first look at how Avengers: Infinity War will pay off, it's a particularly trying exercise. The Russo Brothers understand that more than anyone, and as such, they thanked the MCU's legion of fans with the following message:

If that message isn't pure Russo magic, then we don't know what is. As not only creators, but also fans of Marvel's Cinematic Universe themselves, the post above launching the Avengers: Endgame trailer doesn't read as just some corporate thank you. Instead, it invokes the spirit of fandom, with Joe and Anthony reaching out as fellow nerds, rather than a director selling an upcoming release.

That fandom has driven the MCU for a decade's worth of films, and it certainly has made Avengers: Infinity War all the richer when looking at the end of year rankings. Moviegoers absolutely loved the film, critics applauded it, and it's the number 1 film of the year at the worldwide box office.

Obviously thanks are in order for such an achievement, especially since Avengers: Endgame has quite a high bar to cross in order to have any hope of topping its direct predecessor. With a cool $2.05 billion in the bank, Avengers: Infinity War gives The Russos something astronomical to shoot for this time out. But to them, it's probably not even a thought, as their Twitter post is all heart and no marketing.

Rather than position the film to be a record breaking follow-up, the directors that started their MCU tenure with Captain America: The Winter Soldier are looking to aim square at the hearts of fans. You can see it with the content that's in the trailer for Avengers: Endgame, as it plays more towards the emotional and personal consequences of Thanos's big snap, now formally known as "The Decimation."

Anyone can put together a trailer of quick cuts, devastation, and grim faces. The Russo Brothers, in hiring whomever cut that trailer for them, made sure that not only were they selling a potentially earth shattering blockbuster, but also a cathartic end to 10 years and 22 films worth of storyline. Those are the type of guys who thank their fans with a trailer like the one below, and those are the type of guys you want directing a film like Avengers: Endgame.

This Rotten Week: Predicting A Star Is Born And Venom Reviews

There are only two movies on the docket this week, and, without giving too much away, it looks like they exist on totally different ends of the critical spectrum. On one side we have what looks like could be a serious contender for major prizes in the upcoming award season; and the other looks like an unfortunate new addition to the ever-growing list of live-action comic book movies. Get ready for A Star Is Born and Venom.

Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. Let's take a look at This Rotten Week has to offer.

Considering her talent, ability to play different characters on stage, and general showmanship , Lady Gaga was always going to hit the big screen in a dramatic role eventually. And by all early accounts she crushes it in A Star Is Born, the third remake of the 1937 original of the same name. The movie follows Bradley Cooper's character, a famous country music star, who meets and falls in love with an up-and-coming singer (Gaga). The discovery starts him on a path towards getting his life on the straight-and-narrow, but it turns out to be a hard path to walk.

Critics have universally praised the film since its festival debut in September, with the Tomatometer sitting at 95% with almost 100 reviews posted. The love isn't just coming in for Lady Gaga, as it's also there for Bradley Cooper - who not only stars, but also makes his writer/director debut. Like the case with Gaga, the first time seems to be the charm. Critics love the tone of the feature, complimenting the musical numbers and the on-screen chemistry of the leads. I doubt we see the score move over the course of the week.

Venom is often associated with Spider-Man because that's where the character was first introduced in Marvel Comics, but because the beloved webslinger is now occupying the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony has a need to try and really exploit the limits of their license ownership. As a result, we are now getting a Venom movie that doesn't feature the wall-crawler - and sadly it looks like it's going to be much more like Amazing Spider-Man 2 than Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Being set apart from the franchise, Venom looks to feature a different tone than the releases from Marvel Studios, and has a real dark, and, frankly, more creepy vibe (especially in how they portray the character). That being said, it's not Rated-R, only PG-13. It looks like it's trying to have mass comic book movie appeal and fanboy/horror niche qualities, but I don't think either will fully work. Director Ruben Fletcher also helmed Zombieland (90%) and 30 Minutes or Less (44%), and I don't have strong hopes for the critical success of his latest.

We are on a strong run with the Rotten Watch. After a 3-3 showing two weeks ago, we followed it up with three of the four predictions falling in range last time around. Night School (Predicted: 34% Actual: 31%) seemed like an easy one. It had all the trappings of your nonsensical comedy with a bunch of jokes prewritten and just needing some kind of vehicle to deliver them. Critics were underwhelmed to say the least.

Meanwhile, Smallfoot (Predicted: 70% Actual: 68%) looked like a cute, family-friendly story with a solid message, and critics felt that way about the finished produc With animated movies, it's important to appeal to both kids and adults (namely: their parents), and he best way to do that is with a strong story that also features some adult-level humor. Smallfoot mostly checked those boxes, and scored well on the Tomatometer.

Critics weren't at all impressed with Little Women (Predicted: 39% Actual: 35%), which barely made it into having a "consensus" with only 17 reviews posted. For a widely-released film, no one seemed all that interesting in giving an opinion. The trailer made the flick seem contrived and forced, co-opting the name of the book to make a completely different movie. It didn't pay any dividends.

And finally, my one miss was Hell Fest (Predicted: 21% Actual: 38%). I'm actually kind of shocked this film finished as high as it did. If anything, I thought my prediction was going to be on the high side, but the critics who did give it a thumbs up nodded to its pacing and that it didn't screw anything up all that bad. It wasn't lauding praise at all, but for sure more positivity than I guessed.
