Endgames Avengers 1 Callback Originally Looked Much Different

The old adage in war is that no battle plan survives contact with the enemy. You can plan everything out before hand but when the action actually happens, things inevitably change. The same is largely true of making movies. You can have a script and you can work out how every scene is going to look in advance, but once you're actually trying to put the movie together, things will always change. Avengers: Endgame was no different.

The editors behind Avengers: Endgame have revealed that, among the changes that the movie saw in the editing bay, was the way that the heroes entered the battle of New York from the original Avengers film. In the version we saw on screen, we saw the iconic group shot of the Avengers from that film (the image above) which was our establishing shot to tell the audience where in the battle we're coming in. It seems that initially the time travelers joined the story a little bit later in the battle. According to editor Jeffrey Ford...

The script had us showing up right when Tony flies through the Leviathan and blows it up from the inside. But when we screened it for audiences in test screenings we realized it took a few minutes for them to acclimate themselves. It wasn't landing the way we wanted. So we tried other versions.

In the scene, Iron Man is fighting one of the massive Chitari creatures and he asks Jarvis if his AI companion is familiar with the story of Jonah and the Whale. Rather than trying to blast away at the creature's armor, which has proven largely ineffective, Tony Stark flies into the creature's open mouth and blasts his way out the back, which proves to be remarkably effective.

The moment is cool, but it's not necessarily the first thing fans remember when thinking about that battle, and as such, Jeffrey Ford tells Business Insider that test audiences took some time to get up to speed with what they were seeing.

Apparently, another entry point that was tried was the Hulk's complete dismantling of Loki by repeatedly smashing him into the ground. That likely would have worked quite well, but in the end, it was decided that another iconic moment worked better...

The version that won was where we come in on the Avengers first assembling, the round-a-round shot. It was the cleanest and most epic transition back into Avengers 1.

In the end, it really is hard to imagine, Avengers: Endgame doing anything else. That shot of the six team members together is quite possibly the single most iconic moment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even now.

Once you see that, even if you haven't seen the first Avengers film in years, you know exactly where you are in time, which then lets the time traveling versions of those heroes get to work without the narrative having to explain anything. Even with a three hour runtime, there's really no time for that.

Is Avengers 4 Going To Be The Part Two Of Avengers: Infinity War?

Needless to say, there are going to be spoilers in the following article, so turn back now if you want to head into Avengers: Infinity War knowing nothing at all.

There are a number of unsolved mysteries lingering around Avengers: Infinity War, the largest being how the movie will end. Do we think that Joe and Anthony Russo will conclude Avengers: Infinity War on a cliffhanger? Will this movie serve as Part One of a two-part story? When CinemaBlend visited the set of Infinity War in Atlanta, we asked them this directly, and got a very interesting reply. Co-director Joe Russo explained:

Our approach has always been ... we look at the process, as with [co-writers Christopher] Markus and [Stephen] McFeely, it's simply the same thing in the way that the Winter Soldier relates to Civil War, and the way that Civil War relates to Infinity War. These two [Avengers] movies will also relate. There's a narrative thread that is connecting these films, but at the same time, there's an independence in terms of what the experience is, or where the story goes. It isn't a true two-parter. And I think the two-parter concept came back when Marvel decided they were going to culminate the MCU. It was going to be a two-movie deal. But as we developed the movie, in execution, it ended up being more of two singular expressions. And I think that's just what happened.

This stems from the event that Marvel President Kevin Feige held several years ago, where he mapped out the entire Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in one fell swoop. The culmination of that announcement was the reveal that the studio was going to make Avengers: Infinity War -- Part 1 and Part 2. Now, however, the tide has turned, and Avengers 4 is an untitled standalone film, yet one that still continues the story that will be established in Infinity War.

When we met with Joe and Anthony Russo on the Avengers: Infinity War set, they were shooting both films at the same time, and not fully considering where they would split. Or, perhaps, they knew, and just wouldn't share! That's more likely. We don't even know for certain whether Thanos (Josh Brolin) will be part of Avengers 4, or if he'll do something in Avengers: Infinity War that so drastically alters the fabric of the existing MCU that there's no turning back, making Avengers 4 a clean-up movie

The superhero origin story tends to be a pretty important step on a character's journey. Spider-Man gets bit by a radioactive spider. Daredevil takes a blast of radioactive materials to the face, causing his blindness -- but amplifying his senses. And Bruce Wayne loses his parents, then adopts the symbol of the bats that terrify him. The Incredibles, though, don't have a traditional origin story. When we meet Elastigirl (Holly Hunter), Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson) and the rest of the Parr family in the 2004 film, they already have their abilities. So when CinemaBlend traveled to Pixar's campus for an exclusive conversation with Incredibles 2 helmer Brad Bird, we asked him how the "Supers" in this franchise get their powers, and he admitted:

I don't know. You may have just created Incredibles 3. I mean, it doesn't really matter to me, you know. The sort of 'classic Marvel thing,' somebody spills a test tube or something and then somebody's got a superpower. I don't know. I think that in my mind, it's a little more natural than that. If we have a baby with superpowers, that means they can be born, I guess. So, it's probably not the toxic spill thing. Although, I wouldn't say that every superhero in this universe is naturally created. Maybe there are some toxic spills in there. I don't know. Hopefully I won't ever have to explain it.

The question seemed to catch Brad Bird off guard, as if he hadn't ever contemplated how his incredible characters acquired their incredible powers. In fact, in a different part of our conversation, Bird confirmed that the powers aren't really all that important to him, and that The Incredibles and its pending sequel, Incredibles 2, was always more focused on family than it was on superheroes. The comic-book nature of the Parr clan just gave Bird and his team of genius animators an avenue into exploring the difficulties of a family dynamic, and it doesn't sound like that emphasis is going to change heading into Incredibles 2.

Still, we have reported that there will be more superheroes on display in Incredibles 2 than just the Parr family and Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson). Our visit to Pixar on behalf of Incredibles 2 unearthed the existence of The Wannabes, super-powered beings who have been in hiding for years because of the government oversight that has made heroes illegal. This is still an issue when Brad Bird's Incredibles 2 opens, but because of the emergence of Elastigirl (Holly Hunter) as a triumphant, heroic figure, these characters leave the shadows and try to re-establish themselves into the world.

But according to Brad Bird, we probably won't learn that much about their origin stories either... though I think, for a few minutes, we had him thinking about it.

Incredibles 2 opens in theaters on June 15. It brings the Parr family back into the spotlight, and introduces a few new antagonists. Have you grabbed your tickets yet?
