Hugh Jackman Hilariously Fired Back At Ryan Reynolds Before Once Upon A Deadpool Release

Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds have had a hilarious rapport with one another ever since they appeared together in X-Men Origins: Wolverine a decade ago. With the rise of social media, that rapport has gotten even funnier, as the actors can now troll each other across the digital landscape. The latest example of this is Jackman firing back at Reynolds ahead of Once Upon a Deadpool's release next month, which you can watch below.

During his visit with MTV News, Hugh Jackman, a six-time MTV Movie Award nominee, took the opportunity to hit back at Ryan Reynolds political attack ad-style, accusing the Deadpool actor of riding his coattails. Jackman was generous enough to select Reynolds to deliver the "universally acclaimed, best portrayal of Wade Wilson ever," and as Jackman sees it, not only did Reynolds' career benefit from this, it's also the reason he was chosen to be People Magazine's Most Sexiest Man Alive, just a year after Hugh won that honor.

Ultimately this video is meant to plug Once Upon a Deadpool and how a portion of ticket sales for that movie will go to Fudge Cancer, the charity that's been temporarily renamed to fit in with this kid-appropriate version of Deadpool 2. However, Hugh Jackman provided extra incentive for people to see Once Upon a Deadpool: to ensure that Reynolds doesn't make another Van Wilder or Green Lantern movie. No doubt there are a decent amount of people who can get on board with this.

It's content like this that just makes me more disappointed that we're unlikely to ever see Hugh Jackman's Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool team up properly in a movie. Reynolds has repeatedly expressed interest in making such a project happen, and at one point even suggested that Jackman simply play himself rather than Logan. Alas, Jackman once again shot down the idea of a Wolverine/Deadpool buddy movie last week since he retired as Wolverine in Logan, so we'll just have to keep enjoying their amusing back-and-forth with one another in real life as a consolation prize.

Looking to the near future, Once Upon a Deadpool is putting Deadpool 2 through a PG-13 lens, allowing the young'uns who couldn't see it in theaters earlier this summer to catch it on the big screen. This cut of the movie is also using a Princess Bride-like framing device, with the masked Wade Wilson "reading" the toned down story to an adult Fred Savage, who's been taped to his bed and forced to listen because he still emits "childlike innocence." Yeah, I'm not so sure about that one.

Why An Avengers: Infinity War TV Crossover Is Basically Impossible

Beyond just being good superhero movies, a huge part of the appeal of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is its connectedness. Hulk can show up in a Thor movie and Falcon in Ant-Man and everyone meets up for the Avengers event films. Yet the characters from Marvel's TV shows have basically been ignored and haven't gotten to participate in these cinematic adventures. Still, fans have held out hope that somehow Quake or Daredevil or any of the other TV heroes might at least get a cameo in the massive, uniting, Avengers: Infinity War. But alas, it seems that the logistics of such a thing are just too difficult, as co-director Joe Russo explained in a recent interview, noting,

We have considered everything. But the trick is that we already have at least sixty characters with whom we must tell a story! And it's hard enough to communicate with Taika Waititi, Ryan Coogler, Scott Derrickson, Peyton Reed and James Gunn at the same time, not to add all the showrunners and TV crews to this. The latter is also led by totally different people. So it's practically impossible. Our job is to focus on the Marvel film world and offer a satisfying climax.

Joe Russo's response when asked if a TV and movie crossover is possible basically squashes most hope for this kind of thing happening in the near future. Just having a lot of characters to wrangle and manage and service is one thing, and Infinity War has a ton of them, but it's the other logistics that really make our dream of seeing Daredevil and Spider-Man together a near impossibility. Joe Russo mentions talking to the directors of the MCU's solo films in his interview with Premire, which indicates that they are likely informing the directors of Infinity War about the characters while also being kept in the loop about how the event film will impact those characters in the future (if they have one).

It is that part that makes things especially difficult. If you look at where Daredevil was at the end of Netflix's The Defenders, having him back in his suit and fighting the Black Order in Infinity War would be problematic from a continuity standpoint. Joe Russo also brings up the elephant in the room that the film and television sides of Marvel no longer fall under the same corporate umbrella and would require a level of cooperation between two that may prove elusive. As long as that corporate divide exists the already huge obstacles preventing more interconnectedness between the television and movie worlds become nigh insurmountable.

It is a shame that we won't see the Defenders or S.H.I.E.L.D. making an appearance in Infinity War. Some may argue that these are smaller, less powerful characters, may be ill-suited to the cosmic clash, but Quake from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the likes of Jessica Jones and Luke Cage seem more powerful than Hawkeye or Black Widow. As a fan, I wasn't expecting to have these kinds of characters play a big part in the movie; just to see a quick shot of them throwing down in New York against Thanos' minions would be enough. Plus who doesn't want to see Daredevil and the Punisher fighting side by side with frequent comic book cohort Spider-Man, in that huge splash page scene we've been promised? And that's not even getting into Agent Phil Coulson, who was killed in The Avengers and whose resurrection has egregiously never been addressed in the films.

There doesn't seem to be much hope of seeing Marvel's TV characters in Infinity War, but the nice thing about a franchise this successful is that there is always another chance. Maybe Avengers 4 or Phase 4 will give fans the full interconnectedness that they not only desire, but has been the promise of the MCU since its inception. Despite this bummer of a reality, I guess I'll still check out Avengers: Infinity War, and you can too when it hits theaters on April 27th.

What Could Happen To Warner Bros. If The Merger With AT&T Doesn't Go Through

It would be an understatement to say that Warner Bros. has had an interesting couple of years at the movies. The studio has carved out its superhero niche with hits like Wonder Woman, while also dominating the horror landscape with films like IT and the entire Conjuring universe. However, above Warner Bros. there exists a certain degree of uncertainty, as the potential failure of parent company Time Warner's merger with AT&T could lead to the sale of the studio.

The whole thing started in 2016 when AT&T announced plans to buy Time Warner for an astonishing $85 billion. However, the size, scope, and scale of the deal drew the scrutiny of the Department of Justice, which subsequently led to an antitrust case filed in November in an attempt to block the merger. Now, if the merger doesn't go through, then it could lead to entities like Warner Bros. and HBO breaking up and selling, per a report from from The Wrap.

It is worth mentioning that laying out this situation does not explicitly specify what will happen to some of the various Warner Bros. assets (mainly the DC Comics properties in the DCEU) if Time Warner breaks up. That said, given WB's long history with DC properties, and complicated rights deals, it doesn't seem unreasonable to assume that the studio will continue to retain the rights and keep its development of films like Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 2 and Chris McKay's Nightwing. At this point, it is really just a matter of waiting to see what will happen when all is said and done.

The possibility of this merger not going through comes on the heels of a variety of other major behind-the-scenes changes at Warner Bros. Specifically in the DC side of things, the studio recently went through a massive restructuring of its DC Films unit with the promotion of Walter Hamada and a concerted effort to work on streamlining the DCEU development process.

This AT&T and Time Warner merger is not the first significant media consolidation to draw the attention of the United States government. It has only been a few months since the substantial Disney-Fox deal occurred, and that will have to go through a similar regulatory process before both parties can finalize it. This process is relatively standard practice in the government's efforts to prevent the creation of monopolies, and it will be interesting to see how it affects the entertainment landscape as we learn more about the AT&T/Time Warner situation.

Only time will tell if this behemoth merger will ultimately go through and secure the future of Warner Bros. If it does not, then we will bring you more information related to it as new details are made available to us.
