Disneys Original Ariel Is All-In On Live-Action Little Mermaid

There are a variety of opinions regarding Disney's onslaught of live-action remakes that have been released over the last several years. Not everybody involved in the original animated classics is in love with the concept, but Jodi Benson, the voice of Ariel, says she's all in favor of the reported plan to remake The Little Mermaid, because she trusts the people involved in the project to do it justice. Yeah. I think it's going to be incredible. They are talking about this concept, and the team of people that I've heard mentioned for this particular live-action film sounds quite magical. And I think for Alan [Menken] to be teaming up with Lin-Manuel is going to be phenomenal, and if in fact we have Robbie Marshall, if that is the case, as director and John DeLuca as executive producer. Mary Poppins Returns, I think, was just a fantastic film, so I know that Robbie is an incredible director with a great eye. I think he can handle it. I think it can be delivered in a way that's going to be quite special. I don't know exactly how they'll pull it all off, but I'm sure it'll be amazing.

It's easy to be excited about the live action Little Mermaid when you look at the people who are reported to be involved in it. Rob Marshall, who just came off the success of Mary Poppins Returns has reportedly been offered the director's chair. He was supposed to be making a decision on the job after the holidays, though we've heard nothing about whether he's taken the job or not. In this case, no report that he's turned the job down is likely an indication that he's at least still considering. Marshall's frequent collaborator, producer John DeLuca, is also coming along for the ride assuming Marshall says yes.

Musically, the movie is also in good hands as well as Alan Menken, who wrote the music for the original animated Little Mermaid, will be back for the live-action version. Lin-Manuel Miranda is also involved to work with Menken on brand new music for the new version of the film. Miranda showed just what he could accomplish with Disney music with the remarkably impressive music in Moana. Miranda has a particular love for The Little Mermaid. He has a son named Sebastian who was named after the film's famous crab.

The current status of the new Little Mermaid is unknown. Nothing has been officially set in stone regarding the project. No lead has been signed. There were rumors that Disney was looking at Zendaya to play the role, and while she may be a short list at the studio, the last time anybody had asked, the Spider-Man: Homecoming actress had not been approached about the role.

Jodi Benson's words to ComicBook.com will certainly be a nice boost for the project, though we'll all still have to wait and see when and if this project goes anywhere.

The comic book genre is the most popular in the film world, with loads of talented actors and filmmakers joining cinematic universes. And superhero blockbusters have become so common that certain actors have had roles in multiple comic book properties. Josh Brolin, Peter Dinklage, and Chris Evans have all done this type of work, and for a while it seemed Guardians actor Dave Bautista was jumping over to DC for James Gunn's The Suicide Squad.

During the months between James Gunn's firing and eventual reinstatement as director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, he inked a deal with Warner Bros. to bring The Suicide Squad to theaters. Bautista was a staunch defender of Gunn during this time, and for a while it looked like he might be abandoning the role of Drax to join Gunn's DC project. Now the wrestler turned actor has clarified his intentions, saying:

No, it wasn't that I was going to jump ship and do Suicide Squad. I was more at the point where I was like, 'Fire me. I don't care. You're going to hear what I have to say.' And this is the way I feel and I think you made a bad call and I don't care if you fire me because I feel this way. This is me being honest and me sticking up for my friend who was wronged.' So that was it. It wasn't about me -- I'm not threatening to go do Suicide Squad, but I was just saying, 'If things aren't here, I'm just going to leave. I don't want to be a part of this.'

Finding a replacement for Gunn seemed nearly impossible, and Bautista was open about his disappointment with the situation.

The entire Guardians cast united shortly after James Gunn was fired, penning a letter in solidarity with their director. Bautista was one of the names on that note, but he also made a few other public comments about the situation. What's more, he seemingly threatened to quit Guardians 3 if Gunn's original draft of the script was used.

Despite rumors about Dave Bautista possibly playing Bane in The Suicide Squad, he hasn't officially joined the developing DC blockbuster. And now that James Gunn has been rehired to complete the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, the actor seems to have buried the hatchet with Marvel Studios. So we'll just have to see how Gunn's upcoming superhero movies end up.

Why Han Not Believing In The Force Makes Sense, According To Solo: A Star Wars Storys Writers

The Star Wars franchise is in constant flux, and Lucasfilm and Disney's continued partnership means we'll be getting new blockbusters every year or so for the foreseeable future. Because standalone movies and multiple trilogies are being developed, the galaxy far, far away is bigger than ever before. Given all the new movies coming, fans are able to get a more intimate look at certain characters. This is surely the case with Solo: A Star Wars Story, which does a deep dive into the title character, as well Lando and Chewie. Writers Jonathan Kasdan and Lawrence Kasdan were tasked with crafting Solo's story, and its safe to say they understand Harrison Ford's signature hero by now. In fact, the duo recently spoke to CinemaBlend's own Conner Schwertdfeger about the standalone film, and helped explain why Han wouldn't believe in The Force at first.

Lawrence: There's a lot of things going on in the world that I have no connection with. No knowledge of. No interest in.Jonathan: Religious wars. To people like myself are just mystifying that people would be willing to die for beliefs that, to me, are so far fetched that I could never even dream of. One of the things that we talked about early with Solo, I was particularly energized after seeing Straight Outta Compton, I have to say personally. Yeah because we thought about the idea that Han would be like those young guys, who grew up in a real inner city and was really a child of the inner city. It was tough and survival was the priority and there wasn't access to world events, in this case galactic events. He was living a life of survival in the streets and scrambling to find a place to sleep every night.Lawrence: When he claws his way out of that the last thing he's gonna relate to is 'you know, there's this spiritual... Fuck that, I just got out here where I can breathe and eat.'

While the power of The Force is truly at the heart of the Star Wars franchise, not every character in the galaxy really understands or believes in it. Han's cynicism makes a great deal of sense, given his rough upbringing and experience in the smuggling world.

One thing that Solo does really well is expand why Han became such a resourceful, cocky, and somewhat gruff character. Han grew up on the streets of Corellia, with he and Qi'ra forced to do off jobs and steal in order to appease Lady Proxima. Han has never had support or much power, so the idea of a mystical force that allows the Jedi to have their abilities seems a bit far fetched. After all, the Jedi are all but dead when Han is a young man.

Aside from being the connection that all living things have, The Force and Jedi ways is also a religion in the franchise. It's through this angle that the Kasdans were able to personally connect to Han's POV, and write for the beloved character. Ultimately, Solo ends up being the Star Wars movie with the least amount to do with The Force and lightsabers, although one surprising cameo does provide a brief look at one of the legendary weapons.
