Theres A Petition Fans Can Sign To Get Disney To Rehire James Gunn For Guardians 3

Petitions have become a common way for fans to voice their displeasure with decisions in the world of entertainment. It was only a matter of time before we saw one regarding Marvel's decision to fire James Gunn. However, what's potentially more shocking that the petition asking Marvel Studios to reverse their decision and re-hire James Gunn, is the speed with which the petition has grown, having already amassed over 210,000 signatures in three days.

On Friday it was announced that Disney and Marvel had parted ways with James Gunn, who directed both Guardians of the Galaxy movies, as well as wrote or co-wrote the screenplays of each, following the coming to light of several tweets from nearly 10 years ago when the writer/director had a tendency to make jokes with the intent to shock, and thus used some fairly terrible subjects for the topics of said jokes. However, a lot of people would like to see Marvel reconsider this decision.

We see petitions frequently when movie fans take issue with a particularly beloved property. We've seen petitions for the "Snyder Cut" of Justice League to be released as well as a petition to have Star Wars: The Last Jedi stricken from canon. However, both of those petitions have fewer signatures today than the Re-hire James Gunn petition has right now, showing that this issue is one that fans feel particularly strongly about. The petition continues to grow slowly but steadily so it will be interesting to see where it ends up before it loses steam.

The question, of course, is "could this petition result in any significant change?" The answer is "probably not." We rarely see movie studios change course based on fan reaction like this but if nothing else it will allow those who feel the strongest to say something publicly, and one can be sure that Marvel will be aware of a petition this size, even if it doesn't end up resulting in anything.

Nobody is arguing that the jokes from James Gunn were appropriate, but the petition itself argues that the jokes were made a long time ago, that the man himself had apologized for them previously, and that Gunn should be allowed to become a better person, as he, and others, have claimed he has since those comments were originally made.

At this point, there's a lot of question about what happens next. James Gunn had already completed a draft of the screenplay for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but with Marvel looking to distance itself from the man, it's far from guaranteed that script will be used. Certainly, the movie will need to go looking for a director, assuming that the film happens at all, which is far from guaranteed at this point, as the simplest solution might be to scrap the entire project.

Guardians of the Galaxy fans, and MCU fans in general, are now having their say on Disney's firing of James Gunn, and a lot of them aren't happy. How Much Godzilla: King of the Monsters Could Make In Its Opening Weekend

The summer movie season is basically here. With Avengers: Endgame arriving in just a couple weeks the box office will begin to heat up as the studios all bring out major tentpole releases during this competitive season. One movie looking to make a huge impact when it arrives in a little over a month is Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and early tracking has the film looking at an opening weekend between $40 and $60 million.

While that's a perfectly respectable number for most summer movies, many are wondering if it might be a little low. 2014's Godzilla saw a domestic opening weekend of over $90 million, and so a drop to less than half that for the sequel would be a huge hit. However, it's possible that the movie to look at isn't the previous Godzilla but actually Kong: Skull Island. That film, from which King of the Monsters also follows, came out more recently and managed a $60 million opening, which could indicate people are becoming less interested in giant monster movies.

Part of the issue, of course, is competition. Godzilla had basically none. The biggest movie to open against it was Disney's Million Dollar Arm, which barely grossed $10 million in its opening weekend. The comedy hit Neighbors was number two at the box office that weekend in its second week. The only big tentpole release in competition was The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which was in its third week, and had underperformed from the beginning.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters biggest opening weekend competition is the Elton John biopic Rocketman, which isn't expected to set the world on fire, but is looking at a $25 million opening weekend, far better than what the previous Godzilla's opening weekend competition was able to muster.

In addition, there will likely be significant hold over business from the Memorial Day Weekend releases from the week before, including Disney's live-action Aladdin.

BoxOfficePro simply suggests that the Godzilla/Kong franchise is losing steam. If that's the case, it's not great news for Godzilla Vs. Kong. The movie recently wrapped its Australian production with an eye toward a release next year. Getting it in front of the cameras so soon after Godzilla: King of the Monsters was clearly an attempt to strike while the iron was still hot, but it may have cooled too much already.

Of course, these numbers are still incredibly early and subject to change. As we get closer to release many who might be lukewarm on the film may realize they're actually much more interested in it. At this point, it's probably tough to judge the public's feelings toward any movie that isn't called Avengers: Endgame. Perhaps, by the time we get to the end of May Godzilla will be a true king once again and bring in a massive opening weekend.,

Why Hawkeye And Ant-Man Arent In Infinity War, According To The Russo Brothers

WARNING: There be spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War ahead.

It's kind of funny now to look back on all of the pre-Infinity War speculation and theorizing about why Hawkeye and Ant-Man were missing from all the marketing. This massive, unifying MCU film would surely have them in it, so they were conspicuous in their absence. Now having seen the film, we know that this wasn't a Luke Skywalker situation where they were kept out to hide some secret or build to a reveal, they simply aren't in Avengers: Infinity War. This isn't a case of their scenes being cut either, Hawkeye and Ant-Man are deliberately not in the film, and The Russo Brothers have a good reason why. They spoke out in the Happy Sad Confused podcast, noting,

Anthony Russo: There is a very specific story choice why...Joe Russo: There is a... we have a really interesting story cooked up for both of those characters, and part of that story required that they be under house arrest.

In Avengers: Infinity War, we hear that the events of Civil War were too hard on Clint Barton and Scott Lang's families, so they were both on house arrest. This explains their absence from the film, but as the Russo Brothers talked about on MTV's Happy Sad Confused podcast, this is more than just a way to write them out of Infinity War. It actually has to do with their other MCU stories, presumably in Ant-Man and the Wasp and Avengers 4. How that house arrest will be a part of those respective stories should be interesting. These are the two characters with full families they have to think about. It seems likely this will find them caged, with responsibilities to their families on and the law on one hand and the fate of the world on the other. I imagine the story choice the Russos speak of will be an emotional one.

The absence of Ant-Man, more so than Hawkeye, actually makes a ton of sense given that Ant-Man and the Wasp takes place between Civil War and Infinity War. Had Ant-Man shown up in Infinity War, it may have taken away a bit from his own movie coming out this summer. By keeping his current situation a bit of a mystery, it sets up Ant-Man and the Wasp to still surprise us and Scott Lang's eventual team-up with the rest of the surviving heroes (assuming he survives Thanos' finger snap) all the more exciting. We've also seen Scott Lang under house arrest in the trailers for Ant-Man and the Wasp and basically know that will play a role in his story. How the house arrest affects Hawkeye differently remains to be seen.

As far as Hawkeye was concerned, his absence was the one that stood out the most to fans. Unlike Ant-Man, Clint Barton has been an official member of the Avengers and fought by their side in multiple conflicts, so his absence was noticed. Given the end of Infinity War, it seems that at least a portion of Avengers 4 will focus on the core team from the original Avengers, in a swan song sort of way. Hawkeye is a part of that team and should get his due alongside other Infinity War characters that didn't have as much to do like Captain America and Black Widow. The speculation that Hawkeye will return as Ronin is also still on the table. The Russo Brothers have spoken about Hawkeye's story being a long play and

Avengers: Infinity War is in theaters now. Although we may not see Hawkeye until next year, you can see Scott Lang again soon when Ant-Man and the Wasp hits theaters on July 6th.
