Captain Marvel Almost Included A Tie-In To Thor: Ragnarok

Spoilers ahead for Captain Marvel. If you haven't seen the latest Marvel blockbuster, turn away!

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been on a serious roll in Phase Three, as every blockbuster has been a critical and financial success. While all eyes are on how the narrative will conclude with the apocalyptic story Avengers: Endgame, Carol Danvers was finally given her origin story last weekend with Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's Captain Marvel. With plenty of familiar faces in the cast, the movie has an interesting connection to the greater MCU, although it almost included a great reference to Thor: Ragnarok.

With the movie finally in theaters, Captain Marvel's pair of directors can get a bit more chatty about the film's contents. After all, Marvel security is no joke. When crafting the film's conclusion and end-credits scene, they almost put Jude Law's villainous Yon-Rogg on the scrap planet of Sakaar from Ragnarok. As Ryan Fleck recently revealed:

There was an idea on the table about having Jude Law [] emerge from his pod on Sakaar and then have him look around and see the Devil's Anus behind him and wonder, 'Where the hell am I?'

Is anyone else's FOMO going through the roof right now? Because while Captain Marvel had its own quirky end credits scene, this scrapped connection to the Thor threequel would have sent fans through the roof. Especially the inclusion of the Devil's Anus.

Ryan Fleck's comments to Empire Online shows how collaborative the process at Marvel Studios actually is. While fans see a streamlined finished product and phases of new releases, the filmmakers still have the opportunity to play and mold each individual blockbuster. This includes the credits scenes, which have become a beloved tradition in the MCU.

Thor: Ragnarok was a game changer for Chris Hemsworth's franchise, a Taika Waititi brought a ton of comedy and new cosmic locations to the table. Sakaar was a major setting in the threequel, as the God of Thunder and Hulk were trapped on the trash heap planet, and forced to start a revolution to escape and return to Asgard. The Devil's Anus (lol) was a massive wormhole on Sakaar, which would have served as the perfect setting for Yon-Rogg to end up on if the original plans for Captain Marvel's ending came to fruition.

Ultimately, Yon-Rogg's fate was left unclear, likely so Jude Law's character might pop back up in a potential sequel. He was sent back to Hala to warn the Supreme Intelligence, with that conflict presumably keeping Carol Danvers busy for the decades until she pops up in Avengers: Endgame. And Goose was given one final gag during the post-credits scene.

Captain Marvel is in theaters now, and Brie Larson will return to the MCU when Avengers: Endgame arrives on April 26th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Dominic Monaghan Celebrates First Day Filming Star Wars: Episode IX

It's still over a year away, but production for Star Wars: Episode IX is in full swing. In addition to returning characters like Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron, the movie has been slowly building up its cast of new characters which include the likes of Keri Russell and Dominic Monaghan, both of whom happen to be veterans of J.J. Abrams TV shows. Virtually nothing is known about either of these roles, but that doesn't mean they can't share any excitement about being in a Star Wars movie. Case in point, Monaghan shared a celebratory pic for his first day of work.

Like the previous Star Wars movies, pretty much nothing is known about Episode IX other than that it will conclude the Skywalker saga. As such, there are no details about Dominic Monaghan's character, or how big of a role it is. He also probably can't talk about it properly for months, but being in a Star Wars movie is cool and exciting, especially if you are already a fan of the franchise as Monaghan seems to be. The actor posted a picture on Instagram celebrating the start of production as the "best job ever." The picture was only of a Darth Vader coffee mug but it's a fun tease all the same.

Star Wars: Episode IX is going to be a reunion of sorts for Monaghan and returning director J.J. Abrams. Abrams co-created the incredibly popular television series Lost, on which Monaghan starred as the drug-addicted, ex-rocker Charlie. Despite a controversial ending, Lost is an iconic show, having captivated audiences week after week with its mysteries and well-liked characters. Abrams wasn't quite as involved as with the entire run of the show as co-creator and co-showrunner Damon Lindelof was, but it should still be fun for Lost fans!

Dominic Monaghan will join other fresh faces in the Star Wars universe such as Keri Russell, Naomi Ackie, and Richard E. Grant. The returning faces include Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Lupita Nyong'o, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Anthony Daniels and Mark Hamill. Billy Dee Williams is also on board to finally reprise his role as Lando Calrissian after Donald Glover played a younger version in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Unused footage of Carrie Fisher from previous Star Wars movies will also be used to conclude Leia's story. J.J. Abrams will direct and he J.J. co-wrote the script with Chris Terrio, while John Williams will return as the composer.

Hannibal Buress Admits Doing A Movie About Playing Tag Is Pretty Ridiculous

Some of the best comedy comes from the most absurd places, which seems to be recognized by the folks behind Tag. In fact, the idea of a comedy focusing on a group of grown men comes with an inherent sense of weirdness not lost on cast member Hannibal Buress. On that note, Buress recently opened up in an interview and addressed the bizarre nature of the film's plot, noting that the cast would remark about the ridiculous nature of the plot while filming. The deadpan stand-up comic and Neighbors star explained:

It is pretty ridiculous. A lot of us, while we were doing it, would stop and say, 'Yo, we're doing a movie about tag.' But it's really more about the friendship and the fun and the conversations and camaraderie that come with it. The cast is really good. It's solid.

So, this indicates that the cast of Tag fully understands how bizarre the film's premise is at its core. Hannibal Buress and the rest of the actors get pretty intense with each other in the film's trailers (Jeremy Renner even broke his arms while filming the movie), but they also knew how weird the idea was when they were filming those thrilling tag sequences.

Of course, there is still plenty worth getting excited about with a film like Tag. As Hannibal Buress also noted in his remarks to Las Vegas Magazine, the film ultimately isn't actually about the game of tag as much as it's about the way the game brings this group of friends together. Moreover, the film has also enlisted a cast of heavy-hitters like Mad Men's Jon Hamm, The Office's Ed Helms, The Avengers' Jeremy Renner and New Girl's Jake Johnson, in addition to Buress. When you put all of that together, you have the ingredients for a film that could squeeze every last drop of potential out of the inherently bizarre premise.

Tag centers on a group of friends who have been playing the same game of tag for three decades. However, when the one member of the group who has never been tagged (Jeremy Renner) announces that he is going to retire from the game at the end of the "season," the friends converge on his wedding weekend to stage one last attempt to put their hands on him and break his perfect record.

That definitely sounds like a fairly ridiculous premise for a movie, but it also is worth noting that it's actually based on a true story of a group of friends who actually did play tag for thirty years. Maybe real life merely is more ridiculous than we give it credit for being.
