New Shazam! Video References Superman And Justice League

Shazam! will be the first DCEU solo film that features a superhero who wasnt introduced in Zack Snyders Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and didnt fight alongside the trinity in Justice League. At a glance, Shazam! might appear to take place in a different world entirely, but a new video from the film makes it clear that Billy Batsons superhero exists in the DC world with references to Superman and the Justice League. This Chinese spot for Shazam! on Twitter shows that this movie takes place in a world like ours where kids are big fans of superheroes, but unlike ours it is a place where superheroes actually exists. Freddy Freeman is a big superhero fan and is thrilled to find that his new foster brother has superpowers, dropping references to Superman and other members of the Justice League.

As weve seen in the previous trailers, Freddy has one of Batmans Batarangs, so not only is Batman someone kids idolize, he has his own memorabilia. Its also fun to hear Freddy say heroes fly after the first Shazam! trailer, where Billy Batson was testing out his new powers and having difficulty doing much more than impressive jumping. To Freddy and kids like him, Superman is at the top of the superhero mountain, in large part due to his powers of flight.

Freddy specifically references Superman's death in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, showing how the events of the previous films are common knowledge in Shazam!

The best reference to the Justice League in this video is when a clearly out of his element Billy Batson tells Freddy Freeman that he cant talk to fish, asking what good that power would be even if he could. This is a hilarious reference to the long-standing criticism and joke about Aquaman that he is the hero that talks to fish.

Freddy Freeman dunks on this oversimplification, saying that Aquamans powers allow him to command an army of billions of ocean dwellers. This seems to reference the events of Decembers Aquaman and the war that took place beneath the surface. While saying this Freddy also tugs at his shirt that appears to have the Aquaman logo on it.

Unlike The Walking Dead, which takes place in a world where zombies were never part of pop culture, Shazam! takes place in a world where superheroes are something kids obsess over while also being real. Thats what makes the conceit of this movie so fun, a kid gets the kinds of powers that every kid dreams of having. He gets to experience all the joys of those powers while also discovering that with great poweryou know the rest.

These little Easter eggs are fun for DC fans but they do raise some interesting questions about the DCEU overall and where Shazam! fits in it. The underwater world was being denied in the media in Aquaman, Superman was a controversial public figure and Batman was being viewed as a criminal in BvS. In Shazam! these superheroes are beloved by kids and have their own merchandise.

That makes the timeline for Shazam! in relation to the rest of the DCEU kind of murky. We know that at one point Henry Cavills Superman was expected to make a cameo in Shazam! and Zachary Levi is still hoping for his character to be part of the Justice League one day, but the continuity is all a bit unclear.

Its probably best not to overthink it. The DCEU may be dead as Warner Bros. seems to be moving further and further away from the shared cinematic universe model and just focusing on making the best movies it can one at a time. To that end the early reactions to Shazam! are very positive teasing that the actual film is just as fun as the trailers and videos like the one above make it out to be.

First Overlord Trailer Is Full Of Nazi Zombies And AC/DC

For a while now, the project known as Overlord has been a bit of a mystery over at the Paramount lot. With a vague premise involving Nazi medical experiments uncovered as the D-Day invasion is raging on, not much was known about J.J. Abrams' next big film as a producer. That changes today, as the first trailer has been unveiled, and it's full of undead Nazis and an AC/DC soundtrack! Rock on yourself, through the trailer below.

Overlord sees a group of American soldiers stranded behind enemy lines, after being shot down by German anti-aircraft guns. But what starts as an episode of Band of Brothers turns into something straight out of Call of Duty's Nazi Zombies mode, as our intrepid crew (full of rising stars such as Jovan Adepo, Wyatt Russell, and Mathilde Ollivier) find themselves in a little village with a big secret. A secret that's tapping into some dangerous stuff, in the name of Hitler's thousand-year Reich.

To compare Overlord to Activision's famous video game experience is a compliment in the highest sense of the word. Director Julius Avery's horror thriller looks to have taken the basic bones of the Nazi Zombies experience and turned it into a rip-roaring horror/action hybrid. It could just be the editing of the trailer, but watching Overlord sell its overall product is a sight to behold. Not to mention, it's a treat for the ears, as someone finally decided to dig a little deeper into the AC/DC catalog and pull "Hell's Bells" out to really tie this trailer together.

Sadly, it still looks like Overlord is, in fact, not a Cloverfield movie. Which is a shame, considering what we've just seen looks like it'd fit into the universe as organically as fellow whisper candidate A Quiet Place would have. Come to think of it, with that point in mind, it feels like Paramount is dead set on reinventing itself as a genre-friendly home. In a year that's given us The Cloverfield Paradox, as well as John Krasinski's directorial debut of horrors, Overlord feels like another step towards crowd-pleasing adventure for the recently beleaguered studio. And if this film lives up to even half of the potential it's shown us, there's a chance that this could be a breakout hit of the fall.

Overlord puts its zombies where its mouth is on November 9th. However, if you want to scare up even more fun throughout 2018, take a look at this year's release schedule to see what's lurking in the shadows.

If there's one film genre that has proven itself consistently successful over the years, its biopics. Seeing real-life figures' life adapted to the screen can educate and entertain, and have brought some of the most critically acclaimed movie project in recent memory. Bohemian Rhapsody has had a great Awards Season, while the Elton John biopic Rocketman just released its first full trailer, highlighting the musicians's iconic catalogue. And yesterday it was announced that a Hulk Hogan biopic is being developed, with Thor actor Chris Hemsworth attached to play the wrestling icon.

The internet basically broke with this news, as Chris Hemsworth's casting as Hulk Hogan seemed like a stroke of brilliance by Joker director Todd Phillips. Aside from fans, other actors have voiced their excitement about this project, like Hemsworth's fellow Avenger Chris Evans. Aquaman's Yahya Abdul-Mateen II also took to Twitter, revealing his willingness to join the cast as WWE legend Booker T. Check out his post below.

And just like that, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has thrown his name into the universe to possibly join Todd Phillips' Hulk Hogan biopic. The upcoming movie will reportedly cover a large period of Hogan's life, so it's certainly possible that Booker T could end up being a character. Especially depending on how much of TV personality's controversies are covered in the project.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's tweet is the latest example of actors campaigning for movie roles. In addition to actually auditioning and getting their agent involved, showing interest on social media is a great way to get fans excited, and hopefully get the message to the powers that be. And since Abdul-Mateen is currently surfing on the massive success of James Wan's Aquaman and his badass role as Black Manta, it's a perfect time to strike while the iron is hot.

The untitled Hulk Hogan biopic is being directed by Todd Phillips, with writer Scott Silver writing the upcoming project. Silver and Phillips just collaborated on Joker for Warner Bros., so it's clear that they've got a good working relationship. Silver's other notable writing credits include 8 Mile and The Fighter, so he's had a mixture of ultra-realistic projects, and out of this world movies under his belt. Considering how Hogan is a mixture of both of those things, he's a great choice to bring Hollywood Hogan's story to the silver screen.

Hulk Hogan is serving as an executive producer and creative consult for the developing biopic, so it seems unlikely that the upcoming project will focus much on the wrestler/TV personality's recent controversies. This includes his sex tape scandal with Gawker, as well as Hogan's utterance of the N-Word that ultimately cost him his wrestling contract back in 2015. Still, there's significant hype around the movie, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's possible involvement would no doubt get fans even more hyped.

How Much Star Wars: Episode IX Is Using Dominic Monaghan

If we've learned anything from the new Star Wars: Episode IX casting, it's that it pays to know J.J. Abrams. Two actors from the director's past in television recently joined the star-studded cast: Felicity alum Keri Russell and Lost actor Dominic Monaghan. Monaghan, who is also widely known for his role in the Lord of the Rings, started filming on the set of Episode IX in the beginning of September. Details as to how big of a role the fresh cast will bring to the trilogy closer will likely be under wraps until the film's release but Monaghan did share a little bit of information about his character's current place in the film. Here's what he said:

Because J.J. [Abrams] is a friend of mine, he had said to me that at some point I'd get the opportunity to read the script. He said, 'Just be aware of the fact that there are massive sequences in Act 2, there are massive sequences in Act 3, but because we're shooting Act 1 first, I've put you in there and you seem to not be around as much in Act 2 and Act 3, but that's because that's what we're doing first so I want you here, I want you invested. So read the script, but just know there won't be long until there'll be a re-draft of those things and we'll see you a little bit more.' So I read it, and the script is amazing and obviously there's not a lot I can say.

Developing a film as huge as Star Wars often requires a lot of rewrites and reshoots. As of now it seems like the cast and crew are heavily focusing on Act 1, so that's where Dominic Monaghan's character is most prevalently seen in the script. The actor talked about the process while on the podcast Distraction Pieces, where he detailed the process of nabbing the role of a lifetime. Monaghan said that him and J.J. Abrams clicked immediately when the pilot episode of Lost was being filmed back in 2004. They have a lot of the same "geeky" interests, and the actor is well acquainted with Abrams' family as well.

When J.J. Abrams was working on Force Awakens, Dominic Monaghan approached his friend with interest, and J.J. Abrams said he would keep him in mind. For Force Awakens however, he was looking for newcomers, which Abrams found in Daisy Ridley and John Boyega. For The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson took the reins, making it clear to Monaghan that he wouldn't be in the second one either. However, with Abrams returning for Episode IX, this was his chance. Monaghan even took a break from working for a while in hopes of getting the call and needing to be available, thanks to some playful hints from the director. It all thankfully paid off when Disney reached out to him and he got his hands on the script.

While Dominic Monaghan obviously can't say much about the upcoming Star Wars film, he said it has been an emotional process thus far that's included a warm hug from Chewbacca himself. Star Wars: Episode IX will be in theaters on December 20, 2019.
