What The Alien: Covenant Sequel Is Reportedly About

Ridley Scott's Prometheus introduced the Engineers to the Alien mythology, a mysterious species of intergalactic travelers that gave rise to life on Earth. For his sequel, Ridley Scott had Michael Fassbender's David commit genocide against all of those Engineers living on Paradise. Yet it appears that David did not do his job well enough because the sequel to Alien: Covenant would reportedly see the return of the Engineers.

Alien: Covenant screenwriter John Logan either has or would have wrote the script for the sequel, tentatively titled Alien: Awakening. According to Empire (via HNE), John Logan's script may have dealt with the Engineers that survived the genocide coming after David for revenge. It seems that this story would have eventually taken the film to LV-426, the planet from Alien and Aliens, thus finally and fully connecting these prequels to the original franchise.

Such a story would explain how the Xenomorphs got to LV-426 in the first place. Perhaps in a skirmish with the Engineers, David's ship is shot down, landing on LV-426. There are also some theories that say that the Space Jockey from the first film is actually David after he has taken on a new body.

This is an interesting idea for a potential sequel, in that it would bring the story of Prometheus and Alien: Covenant full circle, while connecting both films to the original Alien films. Thematically it would also make some sense to see the Engineers again dealing with an existential threat from the creation of their creation. Yet the sequel to Alien: Covenant seems to be on hiatus at the moment.

Alien: Covenant made little more than half of what Prometheus did at the worldwide box office, putting a sequel film very much in doubt. That's without even factoring in the reality that the Alien franchise is a 20th Century Fox property and will soon belong to Disney once its purchase of those assets goes through sometime next year. It will be curious to see what Disney does with such a dark, adult property.

Given the longevity and awareness of the brand, it seems likely that the franchise will continue at some point and in some form. But the disappointment of Alien: Covenant at the box office means that it is anyone's guess whether or not such a continuation would still follow the story Ridley Scott had in mind.

Personally, I would like to see the return of the Engineers, but not necessarily just so they could go to war with David; there's no one to root for in that scenario. Prometheus had its problems with stupid characters, but it was at least dealing with compelling ideas. I wanted to see Shaw get to the Engineer's homeworld and learn about why they created humanity and then sought to destroy it. That's fascinating.

Ridley Scott seemed to be bored with that idea, basically killing Shaw and the Engineers before the film began, thus removing hope for answers to Prometheus' most compelling questions. He instead choose to show more Xenomorphs and tell a story about a homicidal A.I. Stories about artificial intelligence killing its creators are a dime a dozen, so to me that wasn't nearly as interesting as the bigger non-David stuff Prometheus was dealing with.

Neil Armstrongs Sons Respond To Flag Planting Controversy

Damien Chazelle's First Man recently screened for audiences and earned solid reviews, but the film has not debuted without some early controversy. Specifically, some have taken issue with the fact that the movie doesn't include the moment in which Neil Armstrong (played by Drive actor Ryan Gosling in the film) planted an American flag on the surface of the moon. In the face of accusations that the film is "anti-American," Armstrong's sons Rick and Mark have issued a statement explaining that the movie is about the lesser-known elements of their father's life, and therefore doesn't include something so iconic. The statement says:

We've read a number of comments about the film today and specifically about the absence of the flag planting scene, made largely by people who haven't seen the movie. As we've seen it multiple times, we thought maybe we should weigh in. This is a film that focuses on what you don't know about Neil Armstrong. It's a film that focuses on things you didn't see or may not remember about Neil's journey to the moon. The filmmakers spent years doing extensive research to get at the man behind the myth, to get at the story behind the story. It's a movie that gives you unique insight into the Armstrong family and fallen American Heroes like Elliot See and Ed White. It's a very personal movie about our dad's journey, seen through his eyes.

This complaint popped up online a few days ago when early screenings of First Man revealed that the American flag does not factor into the moonwalk scene of the movie. Many who heard about this (most of whom have not actually seen the movie) then took to the internet to complain about the omission, arguing on the grounds that it devalues Neil Armstrong's status as an American hero. However, Mark and Rick Armstrong want to put that notion to rest, explaining that their father didn't see himself as an American hero in the first place.

With all of that said, the short-winded version of the story is that Neil Armstrong's sons simply want folks to check out the movie before making these "anti-American" assumptions for themselves. The sons continued in their statement released by EW and said:

In short, we do not feel this movie is anti-American in the slightest. Quite the opposite. But don't take our word for it. We'd encourage everyone to go see this remarkable film and see for themselves

Audiences will get to see what Damien Chazelle and Ryan Gosling have done with the life of Neil Armstrong later this year when First Man debuts on October 12. How Margot Robbie Feels About Getting Naked In Movies

Margot Robbie's acting profile has steadily risen over the past several years. In that time, she's taken on a wide range of roles, playing a DC member of the Suicide Squad, a problematic U.S. Olympian, Jordan Belfort's lover in The Wolf of Wall Street, famous Tarzan character Jane Clayton, and a naked character in a bathtub in The Big Short. She's recently played a stripper in Terminal, and now she's speaking out about nudity and sexual power in films, and how she feels about nudity in particular roles. As she has been naked on film before, she's not opposed, but she says there needs to be a motivation and self-awareness for the scenes to work. According to Robbie:

If I see it in a character that's using it as a weapon, or a tool, or doing it intentionally. Like in Wolf of Wall Street, she's wearing a short dress for a reason. She knows it's her currency. She's going to get her own. That feels empowering. When it's used in a way that there isn't that self-awareness, then it does feel like you're kind of taking advantage. And then I don't really vibe with it.

In The Wolf of Wall Street, Margot Robbie's character is in various states of undress throughout the movie. Margot Robbie's character Naomi --spoilers!-- starts out as the other woman. However, after Jordan Belfort's wife finds out about the relationship, she becomes his wife. Through part of the movie, there's always the feeling that if she wants to keep the decadent lifestyle she must keep Belfort happy, and that shows onscreen early on. Eventually the character no longer needs to use her sexual commodity and decides to divorce him. In previous interviews, Margot Robbie revealed that she was given the option to not go fully nude for Wolf of Wall Street, but she chose to portray Naomi in a way that made her vulnerable. Robbie would also get naked in a bathtub for a bit part in The Big Short.

While she doesn't get naked in Terminal, her sexuality is still a commodity in the film, only this time around Margot Robbie had a say in what the character did with it. She also spoke with Yahoo about the pitfalls of being told what to do in Hollywood, especially when she was just breaking out as an actress.

I think it's also something that comes with age. Even if I wasn't doing the producing stuff, I would have started having those kinds of opinions, or being vocal with those opinions anyway. Just because I'm starting to get to the age of working on films pretty consistently for the past ten years. I do have an opinion, and I'm ready to be vocal about it. But at the beginning, to be honest, you're just so grateful that you even have a job that you don't want to rock the boat sometimes.

In Terminal, clearly Margot Robbie could be more vocal about her role. She was a producer on the movie, and she has spent the last several years gaining more autonomy in the industry through producer roles, including a Harley Quinn project. If there's more nudity onscreen in the future, it will likely be on her own terms.
