Avengers: Infinity War's Writers Say They Didn't Worry About Marvel's Upcoming Sequels While Writing

A lot of the times in superhero stories, the good guys triumph in the end. Not so in Avengers: Infinity War. After collecting all six Infinity Stones, Thanos wiped out half of all life in the universe with the snap of his fingers, and the surviving half was left wondering what had just happened. It was a shocking conclusion, but it also posed an interesting issue, as Marvel has already confirmed that characters like Spider-Man, Black Panther and the Guardians of the Galaxy will be back during the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase Four. This subsequently poses an interesting marketing challenge for the folks at Marvel Studios, but Infinity War writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely didn't worry about these sequels when penning the latest MCU movie. When specifically asked about how Marvel will promote Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, the duo responded:

Christopher Markus: Look, two hours of Aunt May crying, it could be great.Stephen McFeely: It's a good question and it certainly leads to bigger questions about audience expectation and if you know too much about how Hollywood works or release schedules, things like that. Does it hurt your enjoyment of the movie?Christopher Markus: Clearly if there are people crying and articles about how to console your children at the end of it, it doesn't matter what you know.Stephen McFeely: And we can't make movies for people who read Variety, you know what I mean?

It's an interesting dilemma, to be sure. Spider-Man, a.k.a. Peter Parker, was one of the MCU heroes who vanished when Thanos became all-powerful, and I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that his demise was the most heartbreaking of all. To the people watching Avengers: Infinity War who aren't familiar with death's frequent impermanence in the comics and don't keep up with the latest movie news, they might wonder if Spider-Man and those other heroes are truly dead. For everyone else, they know that most, if not all, of those characters will eventually be back, but that still doesn't solve the problem of how Marvel can market some of these upcoming movies, particularly Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, since it's coming out only two months after Avengers 4.

However, as Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely said during their interview with Collider, it's not their job to worry about anything outside of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4. They're writing these stories to be as compelling and interesting to both casual viewers and longtime fans, and it's up to people in other departments to worry about advertisement. The MCU has become so popular and Spider-Man is still one of pop culture's most recognizable superheroes that part of me wonders if Marvel and Sony actually would wait until after Avengers 4's release before releasing any Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 previews. But I doubt that'll happen, and the first trailer for the Web-Slinger's next standalone movie will likely drop a few months before Avengers 4 comes out. So anyone who watches trailers will know going into Avengers 4 that at least Spider-Man will be back, and then they'll soon realize he won't be the only one who isn't gone for good.

We'll find out how Avengers 4 follows up on the events of Avengers: Infinity War (which is still playing in theaters) and conclude the MCU's Phase Three when it's released on May 3, 2019.

The Other Character Ryan Reynolds Plays In Deadpool 2

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for Deadpool 2. If you have not yet seen the film, please bookmark this page, and save the read until after your screening!The surprise appearance of the Juggernaut in Deadpool 2 is certainly one of the movie's most excellent surprises -- but in that department the film also leaves audiences with a bit of a mystery. After all, the end credits don't actually say who plays the character, instead just saying that he stars as "Himself." Fortunately for you, I wasn't comfortable with this lingering question, so I went hunting for the answer. When I spoke with director David Leitch on the subject earlier this week, he revealed that he himself played the Juggernaut along with Ryan Reynolds in performance capture -- with Reynolds also performing the dialogue. The filmmaker told me,

The spoiler is Juggernaut is sort of a combination of Ryan and myself. And it only became, and this is a spoiler spoiler. It only came out of just the necessity of change, and you're getting into the post-process, and we're like, 'Okay, now we need a face animator actor.' And I'm in the editing room, and Ryan's writing alts, and we're like, 'I'll just go do it.' And then the animators are going to change it anyway.

I learned a lot about the Juggernaut when I sat down for a one-on-one interview with David Leitch during the Deadpool 2 press day in New York, starting with the fact that he and Ryan Reynolds switched off doing the performance capture work during production. Apparently it was really a matter of convenience, as they felt that they didn't need outside help bringing the character back to the big screen for the first time since X-Men: The Last Stand.

Clearly the convenience factor worked out extremely well on set, with David Leitch and Ryan Reynolds always being around during the making of Deadpool 2, but it also extended to recording sessions of the voice during post-production. According to Leitch, his star occasionally came in to record some additional dialogue for Deadpool anyway, do during those sessions he was able to get all of Juggernauts lines as well. Said Leitch,

Ryan did some performance capture for certain dialogue bits. And then he provided the voice, which we altered, which allowed us to, when we we're in post, we're doing some alts for Deadpool. It'd be like, 'Okay, let's just switch into Juggernaut mode, try this.' As opposed to 'Let's bring in somebody, wait for them, call time,' all this. It was a tight unit. Ryan's got another franchise!

Much like Deadpool and Colossus, Juggernaut is yet another fan-favorite Marvel character that this branch of the X-Men franchise has managed to buy back to a certain degree. Vinnie Jones' version of the character from X-Men: The Last Stand is far more infamous than it is popular, mostly because of one terribly embarrassing meme-inspired moment. Fortunately, Deadpool 2 creates a new version of the famed villain who is much more like his comic book counterpart than the previous interpretation.

Not only is Juggernaut, a.k.a. Cain Marko, physically more accurate (much bigger than just a normal human), the movie even manages to dig a bit into his important backstory. Specifically, while we don't get the full explanation of his backstory -- which is fairly complicated --we do at least learn that he is Professor Xavier's brother. While talking with screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, they told me that getting into more of the character's history wasn't something that was really on the table, but that they definitely wanted to give fans a treat. Said Reese,

We did think that Juggernaut had not been treated as well as he could have been in previous movies, and we wanted to rectify that... we worried a little bit about too much backstory, like with Cable in particular. We were like, 'Let's make him a man of mystery. The whole Nathan Summers clone, techno-virus, all that stuff, we just thought we were going to overload our audience. But we did sneak in the bit about Professor Xavier.

At the end of Deadpool 2, Juggernaut suffers a fairly embarrassing defeat, as he gets a live wire shoved up his butt before being dumped in a pool -- but you shouldn't be too concerned about him. Not only did David Leitch suggest in my interview that Juggernaut survived the battle, but he also explained that he is excited to potentially play around with the character a lot more in future films. Said Leitch,

I think there's ground in the future to really expand on his powers. He only comes into the movie in the third act, and we kind of set the location, and I mean there's only so much you can do with him in a mano a mano fight, you know? The Juggernaut's action comes from him like plowing through stuff, and he's unstoppable, and we just didn't really have that in the construct of the set piece. So I do look forward to in future installments, if they want to bring him back, to watch him wreck some shit.

We'll have to wait and see if Juggernaut gets his chance to truly wreck some shit in a future film -- but for now we can definitely be happy with the version that Deadpool 2 delivers.

PETA Already Knows What It Would Do For Dinos In Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Ever since Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park debuted in theaters back in 1993, many fans have debated over the ethical questions posed by the franchise. That idea has only become more pronounced with the debut of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, as the animal rights debate is now front and center of the narrative. With that in mind, the folks at PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) actually have a plan to protect the genetically-engineered dinos that involves putting them on an island of their own. PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange explained:

Our number one approach to rescuing animals in peril would be to definitely get assistance from government entities. It would also be for people to understand the nature of these animals. Regardless of how these animals, or dinosaurs in this case, benefit human beings, [they have a lot of] value on their own. They deserve consideration based on who they are and what their needs are. Needs for a dinosaur would be, potentially, to run wild on his own island with others like him --- without the interference and manipulation of human beings.

So, it seems that the plan posed by PETA for these dinosaurs wouldn't be too far off from what the movies do. They merely would cut out the human meddling and the amusement park aspect of the island. As PETA's Lisa Lange explained in her recent chat with Syfy Wire: the animal rights organization would work with government agencies and raise awareness about how these animals operate, while also finding a suitable island to let them roam wild while life finds a way. It's apparently similar to tactics that PETA has used for other creatures over the years, with the only real difference being that these creatures are human-made.

Warning: spoilers ahead for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom! Do not read any future unless you have seen the latest installment in the Jurassic franchise!

As those of you who have seen Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom already know, this is not a tactic that will work in the Jurassic franchise anymore. The film ends with the dinosaurs escaping and spreading all over the world, with Jeff Goldblum's Ian Malcolm declaring that humanity and the pre-historic beasts are now in a position in which they will have to exist side-by-side for the foreseeable future. We already know that Jurassic World 3 won't include any other hybrid dinosaurs like the Indoraptor, which seems to suggest that the focus will be on natural dinosaurs, and how they exist in the modern world inhabited by humans. It looks like PETA will have to rethink its plan.

Hopefully, we will never find ourselves in a position in which real dinosaurs need that kind of protection. That said, it's good to know that the folks at PETA have a plan in place, just in case we need one.
