Why The X-Men Cast Loves Returning To Their Roles Every Few Years

One benefit of joining a superhero franchise is that, so long as you are doing a good job of adapting your comic-book source material, you get to return every few years and continue to develop the character. This can mean exploring new sides of a complicate hero (or villain). And sometimes, as was the case with Sir Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman, you can leap years into the future and play veteran shades of a character you helped create on screen. (And if you havent seen them in Logan yet, what the hell are you waiting for?)

We realized this when sitting down with the Dark Phoenix cast in London recently. Some members of the ensemble have been with this franchise since 2011s X-Men: First Class, which introduced younger versions of Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence). Evan Peters joined the fray in X-Men: Days of Futures Past, while Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan and Alexandra Shipp signed on with X-Men: Apocalypse.

Seeing as how they were getting a chance to evolve their takes on the characters in Dark Phoenix, under the guidance of new director Simon Kinberg, I asked them what they really enjoyed about getting to come back and revisit their roles every couple of years. Michael Fassbender made the connection to the roles his colleagues are getting in top-notch television shows these days, telling CinemaBlend:

I suppose when you watch a lot of the great television thats out there at the moment, and it all for me started with The Sopranos, when you really get to dive in and really get to know these characters and follow them through different stages in their lives and different points in their life, where theyre at, its more of an in-depth study. Thats what this has allowed us to do, over four films, as opposed to just coming in [and] doing a standalone piece.

His co-star, James McAvoy, elaborated on that, noting:

Sometimes, you make a film and its just a standalone film. You put so much of yourself into it, and then its done. You walk away. And theres a virtue in that. Thats great, because you get to just move on with your life and do something different. Sometimes you think back and go, That was like, that was part of me that went into that. So, with Charles you put a lot of yourself into it, but we get to come back a little and we get to reconnect and make something that lasts a little longer than just that three months or the two months where you are making a movie.

The X-Men cast seems to have developed into a professional family over the years and how could they not? They have been collaborating with each other on the same saga for the better part of a decade, contributing to the storylines for Days of Futures Past, First Class, and Apocalypse before reuniting now for Dark Phoenix.

James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender noted that they have seen their own roles in the industry evolve over the same time frame, and it has been exciting seeing how the industry views the X-Men family and the work that they do:

Fassbender: Its also nice to come back and work with the group that we have. Its a fantastic bunch pf people. Really talented, but also generous of spirit. And so yes, its nice to come back. Theres the familiarity there, but theres also something new.McAvoy: Even that, within the family of the filmmakers, as well, watching different evolutions happen there. Watching Simon [Kinberg] step into the directors chair. And watching Sophie [Turner] step up and lead the movie.Fassbender: And watching JenniferMcAvoy: Oh my God, become the biggest movie star in the world! From an 18-year-old she was, like, in a film that had done alright to, like, the biggest movie star, ever. [Laughs]

Sophie Turner is a pretty massive star in her own right, thanks to the part of Sansa Stark on the wildly successful HBO drama Game of Thrones. In that situation, similar to the X-Men, she was able to return to the project every few years and keep evolving the way that the character was portrayed.

But when we spoke to Turner about Jean Grey and the X-Men, she singled out a specific device in this series that helps keep the characters fresh and new, explaining:

Thats the thing that I love so much about these movies is being able to develop a character over years. And the great thing is, as well, between each of these movies [theres] 10 years time. They jump for 10 years. So every time, you have to go back and go, Hmmmm, what have they been up to? What developments have been made in their lives? Thats something that I love, just fleshing out a storyline.

And sometimes, the ability to come back and live inside of a franchise just allows the cast to better understand the larger picture about how these movies are made. Just because you have made one doesnt mean that you are automatically an expert on massive tentpoles. Even Evan Peters, who has put his Quicksilver into several memorable X-Men moments, admitted to CinemaBlend:

I think, also, in terms of, just shooting these films is a whole technical masterpiece that I dont even Im not even smart enough to understand even a little bit of it. So its just kind of amazing to watch them do that and be a part of that so coming back, you sort of have a little bit of a better idea of what youre in for, which allows a little more freedom to be creative and explore different sides of the character.

Thats refreshingly cool to hear that the actors in these massive blockbusters are still learning and growing with each new chapter, developing their roles and refining their approaches to how their comic characters are portrayed on screen.

To 3D Or Not To 3D: Buy The Right Sherlock Gnomes Ticket

In case you were unaware, the sequel to Gnomeo and Juliet is landing in theaters this weekend. And much like its predecessor before it, Sherlock Gnomes is ready to entertain its audience with its own version of 3D thrills. But is this long promised sequel best enjoyed with or without the aide of darkly colored glasses?

It's time to investigate for ourselves, as we're about to answer one of our favorite questions: to 3D or not to 3D? Should you want to see how we rated the film itself, you can head over to our official review to find out. But if you're more curious about how the 3D presentation of Sherlock Gnomes measures up, then stick around!

Kid movies tend to be really good fits for 3D conversions, as they can contain genuinely eye popping thrills that dazzle under the right conditions. Just looking at the visuals and whimsy that Sherlock Gnomes has on display is enough to show even the casual observer that a proper presentation with third dimensional enhancements could be a feast for the eyes. In concept, this should work really well.

Unfortunately, the visuals in Sherlock Gnomes' 3D conversion are hampered by two factors that should never have been a problem. Not only are the brightness levels horrible, in a film that screams "Colors!" from the word go, but there are several hand-drawn animations that are left in 2D throughout the film. How these factors were so overlooked is a mystery, but this film is not going to be a friend to your eyes.

When a 3D film manages to throw objects out of the window of view, it's known as going "before the window." It's an achievement that most films can pull off to a minor degree, much like the one seen in Sherlock Gnomes, where there's some stand out effects that pop out of the screen. And yet, for the moments that the film gets right involving rolling pins pointed at the audience, or Doctor Watson's retractable cane flying into the air, the film doesn't consistently play to that level of spectacle.

As far as the factors "beyond the window" in Sherlock Gnomes, there's no overt problems that ruin the film's visuals. The backgrounds are crisp and active, with characters being properly separated with correct spatial reasoning. There's also no flatness to the backdrops, though they don't reach as far as a highest tier 3D conversion would reach. Still, there's enough detail to get lost in if you peer deep enough into any frame of the film that isn't a 2D sequence.

For a movie as colorful as Sherlock Gnomes is, the brightness of the picture is so dimmed that it kind of strains the eyes. If you were to lift your glasses off, you could see the level of color that's actually present in the film's visual component. But putting your glasses back on turns the picture into a washed out mess. Though at the very least, the night sequences can still be watched without too many problems, as they fit right in with the overall consistency of the picture. Please note, this is a subjective problem, as it also depends on how well the theater showing the film maintains their projector while switching between 2D and 3D showings.

A good 3D film tends to blur the lines not only between the audience and the movie they're watching, but also, quite literally, the image itself. With Sherlock Gnomes, there's some decent blur throughout the film, with the standard 2D anchors to let the rest of the film fly free around. This lends to good depth of picture, and some decent projection of objects beyond the window. And then the film trips over its feet by including not one, but several, 2D sequences that interrupt the flow of the film's 3D presentation. They don't even try to turn the hand drawn animation into a 3D image, they just let it play as is.

As far as motion sickness goes, Sherlock Gnomes will give you gnome problems at all. The action does wonk out a little bit, but for the most part, the images are steady and watchable. And yet, the problem with the lack of brightness in the picture being shown is the bigger threat to your eyes, as it tends to strain the viewer's senses a bit. This error is only compounded by the fact that once you lift your glasses for a break, you'll see all the color you need.

If there's a 3D theater that you trust to keep its equipment in perfect order, and if absolutely have to see Sherlock Gnomes in 3D, then there's a shot this might work in this premium format. But even then, there's a chance that you might want to save the extra money on tickets and wait for a 2D matinee to open up. The conversion isn't very impressive, and acts more as a cash grab, rather than a visual enhancement.
