Why Spike Lee Dedicated BlaKkKlansman To Charlottesville Victim Heather Heyer

While the filmmaking world has seen plenty of new directors become wild successes in the past few years, there are certain filmmakers that stand out with their contribution to the business. Director/writer/producer Spike Lee is certainly one of those legends, as he's received acclaim for his decades of movies, and for portraying the black experience in America through film. The latest Spike Lee joint to hit theaters is BlacKkKlansman, based on the crazy true life story of Detective Ron Stallworth, and his infiltration of a Ku Klux Klan chapter in the 1970s. The movie ends with a gut punching coda, showing footage of the Charlottesville attack that ultimately took the life of protestor Heather Heyer last year. BlacKkKlansman is dedicated to her memory, and I recently asked Spike Lee why that powerful choice was made. As he told me,

They're terrorist groups, and they murdered Heather Heyer. And when that happened, I knew that had to be the coda for the film. But only if I got the blessing of Heather's mother Susan Bro. So I was able to get her number, and she gave me the blessing.

Spike Lee has always been an inherently political filmmaker, tackling issues of race, discrimination, and violence. So when the Charlottesville Car Attack occurred in the midst of political clashing, Lee was inspired to complete the filming of BlacKkKlansman, and ultimately end the film with a powerful and harrowing tribute to Heather Heyer's death.

BlacKkKlansman's tribute to Heather Heyer makes sense if you know Spike Lee's track record and political views. But the director was also careful to honor Heather's mother Susan Bro. In our conversation about the film's ending, Lee also revealed he got explicit permission from Bro to include the Charlottesville footage and final message for Heather. So while audience may be shocked by the directorial choice, Lee was sure to be respectful to those involved.

Heather Heyer's tribute in BlacKkKlansman will no doubt taking almost all audiences by surprise, as its in stark juxtaposition to the film's narrative conclusion. The good guys ultimately come out on top, wrapping up the story with a nice little bow, complete with Ron Stallworth prank calling Topher Grace's David Duke. And just when you think its safe to go home, the Charlottesville footage is shown, and the message of the film is brought to the modern age.BlacKkKlansman is in theaters now, complete with Heather Heyer's tribute and a previously unreleased Prince song. While Peter Jackson didn't actually direct the new movie Mortal Engines -- that duty belonging to Christian Rivers -- he did have a huge hand in its creation. After all, he's not only credited for producing the film, but also co-wrote the script with long-time collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. That's not all, however, as it turns out that he also made significant contributions to the production design, as I recently learned from star Robert Sheehan,

It must be said as well, a lot of the exhibits in the London museum were Peter Jackson's actual stuff. Because he's a real history buff, he collect stuff from like Bronze Age and the Iron Age. He had this like the wooden skeleton of an old World War I plane, that was just hanging there, and he was wandering around going, 'Yeah, that's mine. That's my stuff there.'

Sitting down with Mortal Engines stars Robert Sheehan and Leila George last week, one question I asked was about all of the special details in the production design that audiences may not immediately pick up on without looking for them. While discussing the expansive London Museum set featured in the movie, Sheehan revealed that a number of the items were actually on loan from Peter Jackson, who evidently has a personal collection stocked with all kinds of historical items.

In Mortal Engines, the London Museum is essentially an archive that displays all kinds of artifacts from the world that existed before the Sixty Minute War -- a human-driven cataclysmic/apocalyptic event that totally changed life on Earth and led to societies boarding giant mechanized cities. Not all of the items are properly labeled, leading to some major inaccuracies, but there is a wide range of items featured, from video game systems to Segways. And while we can't say for sure exactly which items belong to Peter Jackson, it can be a fun guessing game for fans watching the movie.

The Easter eggs apparently don't stop there, however, as the actors also pointed out a recurring aesthetic theme in Mortal Engines: the design presence of lions. According to Leila George and Robert Sheehan, they can be found all over the place in the film, just waiting to be noticed by audiences:

Leila George: The lions. There's lions everywhere. I know that they're there, but there's lions everywhere in the film. Oh, and then you've got... tell him about the lions in the museum.Robert Sheehan: In the London museum where Tom works there's a sculpture of a lion, this beautiful... like the lions in the front of the city with a placard that says 'These majestic beasts used to roam the earth.' You know, like there's these mythological creatures. It's very despairing, you know. I hope that's not going to happen, where we kill all the lions.

Sadly that does actually sound a lot like the world we currently live in, as I pointed out during the interview, but let's not dwell on it.

Incredibles 2 May Make Even More Money Than Expected

While there have been quite a few PG-13 movies that could work for many families hitting theaters in the month of May, the only big PG-rated opener has been Show Dogs, which has made a paltry $8 million at the box office so far and even had to be edited after annoying certain parents. This should leave the door wide open for Incredibles 2 next month. The movie is totally geared to families, has already been given a PG rating for "action sequences" and "some brief mild language." It should clean up at the box office, and new estimates indicate it may do better than we originally thought. In fact, we're talking like $30 million more.

Currently, Disney and Pixar's Incredibles 2 is expected to make $140 million during opening weekend in North America. That may not be up there with the opening weekends of Avengers: Infinity War or Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but it is a big opening weekend for a movie. The latest numbers are much higher than what was being hoped for the movie a few weeks ago, as initial estimates were only at $110 million for the Pixar sequel.

Honestly, we were pretty pumped when we thought Incredibles 2 would only make $110 million opening weekend. That's a hefty sum and it would rank among Pixar's highest opening weekends even without the additional $30 million listed by THR tacked on. The laud for highest opening weekend for a Pixar film currently goes to Finding Dory, which opened to $140 million back in 2016. Toy Story 3 also had a behemoth opener for an animated film, with its domestic total on opening weekend hitting $109 million. Like Incredibles 2, both movies were follow-ups to an original premise. We'll have to wait and see how Incredibles 2 opens, but it should be an impressive turnout.

Incredibles 2 officially hits theaters on Friday, June 15. That's the same weekend as new bro-comedy Tag and the Superfly remake, neither of which I see as big competitors for the Pixar film. It's also out a week after Ocean's 8 and disturbing horror film Hereditary, again, neither of which I see as big competitors. The month is wide open for a family film of its ilk, even with scarier (and decidedly PG-13) big box office outing Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom hitting theaters a week later -- a movie that should be more fitting for older kids than kids of all ages.

When Indiana Jones 5 Will Begin Filming, According To Steven Spielberg

The end of this month sees the release of Steven Speilberg's Ready Player One, a film whose source material is largely a pastiche of 1980s pop culture, a decade that Spielberg himself had a huge hand in shaping with films like the Indiana Jones franchise. As a follow up to Ready Player One, the director will finally reunite with everyone's favorite archaeologist. Indiana Jones 5 has been kicked down the road before, but it now looks like it's gearing up at long last. While speaking about the British film industry, Steven Spielberg revealed the movie will begin shooting in the spring of next year, saying:

It's always worth the trip when I get to work with this deep bench of talent coming out of the UK. The actors, and the crew, the chippies, the sparks, the drivers --- everybody who has helped me make my movies here, and will continue helping me make my movies here when I come back in April 2019 to make the fifth Indiana Jones movie right here.

April of next year is not today, so it's later than I'd like, but it is at least another step towards this movie and the franchise's redemption becoming a reality. The confirmation, reported by Empire, came as Steven Spielberg was speaking to an audience at the Rakuten TV Empire Awards in London where he was receiving the Legend of Our Lifetime award. The director took the stage to accept the award, then heralded the film industry in the country and teased the future project he will be shooting there. With a start date finally lined up, we should begin to hear casting details and perhaps even some hints about David Koepp's script before the year is out. We don't know what awesome ancient artifact Indy could be searching for this time around, but we do know that Spielberg has said he that Indy will not be killed off. I also think it's safe to assume that there will be no aliens in this movie.

Indiana Jones 5 was first announced by Disney two years ago for a July 19, 2019 release date, which was eventually pushed back to where it is now, July 10, 2020. Spielberg's confirmation that this movie will begin shooting in about a year bodes well for the film hitting that target. Should the release date hold, it will be over 12 years removed from the last film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which landed in 2008. Also of note is that this means that Harrison Ford will be 76 when shooting the film and three days shy of his 78th birthday when it's released, which should make for an interesting wrinkle (no pun intended) to the story of the adventuring archaeologist. We know that Disney has big plans for the franchise just like everything else, so whether Indiana Jones 5 sets up a successor, reboot or prequel will be something to watch for.
