Gemini Man Trailer Has Will Smith Fighting Will Smith

One of the most intriguing under-the-radar movies of 2019 is Ang Lees Gemini Man. The film from the Academy Award-winning director of Life of Pi stars Will Smith as an over-the-hill hitman who is forced to face off with a clone of his younger self. The first footage from the sci-fi film impressed CinemaCon audiences with its de-aging technology and now we have a full trailer of Will Smith fighting Will Smith. Check it out:

The first thing that must be mentioned upon viewing this trailer is how amazing and impressive the de-aging on Will Smith looks. Despite the fact that he is a CG creation, the clone of Will Smiths Henry Brogan looks nearly indistinguishable from the flesh and blood actor that we saw on film and TV screens in the '90s.

What makes this really stand out is that he is blending in perfectly to real environments with other actors; hes not just surrounded by CGI. If the execution werent perfect, hed stand out like a sore thumb, venturing into uncanny valley territory. For a film where Will Smiths younger clone is one of the main characters, this absolutely had to look great, and based on this first trailer, Ang Lee and his team appear to have pulled it off.

There's also some good action in the Gemini Man trailer, with hand-to-hand combat, gun battles and plenty of explosions. I also really liked how the clone launched a dirt bike at his progenitor. Other than maybe Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Ang Lee isnt really known as an action director, but he looks to have crafted some interesting set pieces here.

It wont be all action though, as the film appears to have a major emotional and psychological element as well, and it is clear that Will Smiths role as an aging hitman is one with a lot of pathos. In the trailer, we hear that the clone is Henry Brogan without the pain, and we see some of that pain, a weariness and melancholy etched on Will Smiths face. One of the questions Ill have going in to this movie is what is the cause of all that pain.

Thats not the only question, though. Im also quite curious about the world this film is set in because it doesnt appear to quite take place in the modern world as we know it. How far is this in the future, what role does Will Smiths hitman play in this world and why is his clone being sent after him are all mysteries that Im excited to see explored. And whats the deal with that cave of skulls the two Will Smiths are fighting in?

Alongside the double-helping of Will Smith, Gemini Man has a great cast that includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Benedict Wong. Gemini Man also stars Clive Owen as Clay Verris, a nefarious looking character who seems to have some unknown agenda. It feels like we dont see Clive Owen in big movies enough, so its great to see him here.

In addition to the aforementioned de-aging, Gemini Man will also be Ang Lees second film, after Billy Lynns Halftime Walk, to employ high frame rate technology. The film is being made in 3D at 120 frames per second in 4K resolution, according to THR. The public hasnt embraced high frame rate films yet, as evidenced by Billy Lynn and the reception to The Hobbits 48fps, but it will be interesting to see if this kind of blockbuster can give the format a boost, provided audiences can find a theater that can display it the way it was meant to be seen.

The Secret Behind The Chemistry Of Tolkiens On-Screen Friends

The power of friendship is something that author J.R.R. Tolkien loved to explore in his writings, on par with his exploration of the power of love. One could say that the two were one in the same for him, as his heroes loved their romantic partners and their fellowship equally, as evidenced in various dissections of his worldwide phenomenon, The Lord of the Rings.

Those same powers are shown on grand display in Tolkien, this weekends new release that tells the story of how true love and fellowship influenced the writings that would change the world of fiction straight through to this very day. And its without question that the part Tolkiens friends played in his life is a great plot point in director Dome Karukoskis film, which shows the initial meeting and lifelong friendships built between the author and a trio of friends: Geoffrey Smith, Robert Gilson and Christopher Wiseman.

Playing the roles of J.R.R. Tolkiens own fellowship are, respectively, Anthony Boyle, Patrick Gibson and Tom Glynn-Carney. Judging by their time together in the film, youd be forgiven for thinking they all knew each other beforehand, however thats not quite the case.

As CinemaBlend sat down with the three gentlemen during the press day for Tolkien, the subject of friendship was an easy one to breach. Especially when wondering what the secret was to their special brand of chemistry. In their own words, the truth behind their previous connections, or lack thereof, may surprise you:

Tom Glynn-Carney: We knew of each other before. Wed sort of met on a few occasions through mutual friends, but wed never worked with each other, or spent any sort of concentrated time with each other.Patrick Gibson: Wed done our best not to.Glynn-Carney: No, yeah, in fact, actively avoided each other.Gibson: This was our last straw.

So while these three gentlemen knew of each other, as Tom Glynn-Carney noted in their interview, they really didnt get to know each other until they started production on Tolkien. Whats also apparent is the playful chemistry that took hold in a short time, and still holds to this day, as co-star Patrick Gibson started a chain of good-hearted kidding that suggested these gentlemen never really wanted to meet. But of course they did, and the end result is an absolutely believable friendship that stretches through almost the entirety of Tolkiens biopic story.

Of course, it didnt stop with this trio of fun-loving mates, as Tolkien was definitely a group effort, and everyone fell into a sort of likeable family. Tom Glynn-Carney explained further, with some help from co-star Anthony Boyle, in the following remarks:

Glynn-Carney: But then being thrown into this sort of melting pot of this cast was a great thing, and it all happened very organically. There was no conscious effort made to up the camaraderie or any of that. It just all happened organically.Anthony Boyle: It just fell into place, really. You know, I think we all just really enjoyed each others companies. And we just had a lovely time.Glynn-Carney: Nick [Hoult], and Lily [Collins], and Dome [Karukoski,] and everyone included as well.

Bringing a story as heavy as J.R.R. Tolkiens participation in World War I needs a fair amount of levity, and the inclusion of Geoffrey Smith, Robert Gilson and Christopher Wisemans stories more than does the job. With earlier portions of the film focusing on their social club, the Tea Club and Barrovian Society, or TCBS for short, theres a sort of Dead Poets Society energy in the groups time swearing an oath to changing the world through art.

Without those performances landing, theres no believable friendship that gets J.R.R. Tolkien through his experiences in World War I. If there are two relationships that build the foundation of what makes Tolkien different from the average biopic, the fellowship of the TCBS is equally as important as Tolkiens love affair with fellow orphan Edith Bratt.

Even in the footage from our time in the interview with Anthony Boyle, Patrick Gibson and Tom Glynn-Carney, its apparent that the three are so perfectly matched that it was an easy feat to bring that crucial friendship to life. And you can see it for yourself in the clip below:

Just as the Fellowship of The Ring bonded over the protection of Middle-Earth, the Tea Club and Barrovian Society bound themselves over the arts, and their effect on the world at large. Its a relationship thats key to the overall picture that Tolkien paints, and its one you can currently see in theaters this weekend.
