Bryan Singer's Red Sonja Is Now On Hold

Following the success of Wonder Woman in 2017, Millennium Media announced that it would finance and produce a reboot of Red Sonja, which is a project that has been in some stage of development for many years. Then last year, director Bryan Singer became attached to direct the film and a new Red Sonja looked closer than its ever been to actually happening. But now Bryan Singers Red Sonja is officially on hold.

In comments to Deadline, Millennium Films stated that Red Sonja is not on its slate at the moment and that the film is not for sale at the European Film Market, the trade fair that is currently going on during the Berlin International Film Festival. This move comes after Red Sonja was on Millennium Films slate just last November at the American Film Market where director Bryan Singer pitched his vision for the film to international buyers.

But a few months time clearly changed things for Millennium and now the project has been pushed to the back burner. No reason was given for why Red Sonja has been put on hold or when we might expect to hear more about the projects future.

While it might be easy to assume that this move has to do with the various allegations made about Bohemian Rhapsody director Bryan Singer, who was set to helm the film, he has not been officially removed from his role, for which he is reportedly commanding a huge payday.

Although the cast for Red Sonja had not been set, the film was expected to shoot this year in Bulgaria after languishing in development hell for a decade. Now Red Sonjas stay in development hell has been extended. We are left to once again wait and see what happens. and if this current iteration of Red Sonja makes it to the finish line someday or undergoes behind the scenes reshuffling before trying again.

This is a big move for Millennium Films, because the studio clearly envisioned Red Sonja as a title with a lot of potential. In an age where female-led films are not only more accepted, but have proven lucrative, a movie about a vengeful badass redheaded heroine could really connect with audiences. Red Sonja would also be a big-budget action-fantasy movie, exactly the type of thing audiences might be thirsting for after Game of Thrones wraps up.

Red Sonja is based on a character that first appeared in Marvel Comics Conan the Barbarian and made her big screen debut in a 1985 film starring Brigitte Nielsen. In her original story, Red Sonja suffered the murder of her family and a sexual assault before rising up to seek revenge thanks to some powers granted to her by a goddess.

Jason Statham Has Some Blunt Thoughts About This Less Bloody Version Of The Meg

With the giant shark movie The Meg looking to make a splash at the box office this weekend, we're hearing more and more about the R-rated version of this movie that might have been. The theatrical cut of The Meg is rated PG-13, the ideal rating to appeal to everyone and maximize audiences for the late summer blockbuster. However, from conception to release, this film became less bloody than it might have been. One person who seems to have preferred that version is the star of The Meg, Jason Statham. With regards to how the movie changed from the time he signed on to the final cut, Jason Statham had some blunt thoughts, saying:

Yeah, but there was other stuff at the beginning that was ... I'm, you know. I'm just saying it was radically different. I guess in some ways your imagination and your own perception of what it's going to be is its worst enemy. Just because you should always try and not narrow that down and imagine what you want it to be and just go for the ride. John's interpretation of this is a fun end of summer [movie]. It's full of humor. It's a little bit more directed to a different taste of what my own is in terms of I like more gory adult stuff.

Well, let it never be said that Jason Statham is only going to give the PR friendly take on his projects. Speaking with Collider, he certainly seems to lament the bloodier, more adult version of this movie that could have been. As he said, he prefers a more adult film with perhaps less humor than the fun and funny end of the summer film that Jon Turteltaub put together. Beyond just being his own tastes, it sound like the movie wound up being much different than what Stathaam imagined it would be when he signed on. When that perception doesn't match up with reality, it can be disappointing, and that seems to be the case here. Jason Statham isn't saying that he dislikes the film, just that he prefers more adult fare and The Meg turned out much different than he had in mind.

Of course, Jason Statham understands the business reasoning behind the four-quadrant approach and making this movie appeal to a greater number of people. But Jason Statham highlighted how toning down the gore doesn't necessarily make sense given that this is a movie about a giant shark eating people, saying:

Yeah but you go, 'Where's the fucking blood?' It's like, 'There's a shark.'

He makes a fair point. A more realistic approach would see a lot of blood in this scenario, possibly making the shark and the film scarier in the process. Of course, this is a movie about a prehistoric shark terrorizing modern oceans, so realism is relative. He's not alone in his desire for a bit more gore in this movie. Some people and reviewers feel that The Meg should have been more serious. On the other hand, some think it should have been less serious and for others it was just right. Even we here at CinemaBlend didn't all agree.

As far as the R-rated cut that director Jon Turteltaub has talked up, saying it would have resulted in funnier, gorier and bloodier film, we'll probably never see it since a lot of the more grisly stuff was cut before VFX was finished. Even then, it sounds like some of the darker stuff from the original script was never even filmed.

The new Halloween, by virtue of its name, is mostly focused on the holiday that sees kids dress up in costumes looking for candy. However, one of the characters, Judy Greer's Karen, seems to be celebrating a different holiday, as we see her wearing a traditional Christmas sweater throughout much of the movie. While never specifically referenced in the film, it seems that Karen's upbringing as the daughter of Laurie Strode has led her to hate Halloween, and as such she starts celebrating Christmas a little early. There's that little sign of rebellion. On Halloween, she wears a Christmas sweater so that she doesn't celebrate.

The new Halloween takes place 40 years after the original film and sees that Jamie Lee Curtis' Laurie Strode has never truly gotten over the events of the original film. She has trained herself to fight in case Michael Myers ever comes back and she has also trained her daughter Karen to do the same, something Karen never truly accepted. One assumes that the anniversary of the attack on Laurie was never an easy time in the Strode household. As Karen eventually rebelled against her mother and has become somewhat estranged, it makes sense that Karen just doesn't enjoy Halloween the way most of us do.

Judy Greer tells EW that the idea to have Karen skip Halloween entirely came from director David Gordon Green, but she embraced the idea whole-heartedly. While the movie never comes out and tells us why Karen is wearing a Christmas sweater, Judy Greer had a complete understanding of what's going on in Karen's head.

Like, as soon as the tiny little bite-sized candies come out in the drugstores for trick-or-treaters, she pulls out her Christmas sweater and is like, 'Nope, nope, I celebrate Christmas, I'm just skipping right to Christmas.'

It's a great little element that adds a bit of depth to the story. If you notice that Karen is wearing a Christmas sweater you might even be able to piece together in your own head why she might do that. Her rebellion against her mother and her feeling that there's nothing to fear is made clear, even if her specific hatred of Halloween is not.

It seems that the new Halloween is simply littered with little ideas like this one. Recently, Jamie Lee Curtis spoke about how she decided that, in one early scene, Laurie Strode would be drinking strawberry milk because it's the same thing she drank in the original Halloween, and Laurie Strode is still very much in the same mental apace as yer 17-year-old self. Again, the moment is never explained and attention isn't really brought to it, just like the Christmas sweater, but it all makes sense if you think about it.

Although it was released a month ago, the hype train around Ryan Coogler's Black Panther hasn't slowed down a bit. The blockbuster has broken all sorts box office records, and is a significant moment in pop culture and film history. While just about every frame of the latest MCU installment has been dissected and discussed, there are a few choice moments that Coogler and the film's editors had to cut out of Black Panther. Fans have been eager to find out about deleted scenes, and one has just gone public. Editor and Ryan Coogler collaborator Michael Shawver revealed one scene had to do with Okoye and W'Kabi. As he tells it,

Hands down the most painful scene to cut was [one] with Danai Gurira and Daniel Kaluuya. Toward the end, after things go bad and Killmonger [Michael B. Jordan] is in control and all that, we're talking about, what are they going to do? What is Wakanda going to become?

It looks like Wakanda's supporting characters were originally a larger part of Black Panther, but some powerful scenes ended up on the cutting room floor. Although given the amount of world building the film's large cast of characters, this type of choice should be expected.

Ryan Coogler had to craft the technologically advanced country of Wakanda for Black Panther, which is a major task. The film had a ton of exposition to get through, including how the country managed to stay off the grid with its supply of Vibranium. As such, Okoye and W'Kabi ended up getting the short end of the stick regarding their plot line.

Truly, the relationship between Okoye and W'Kabi was a lost plot in _Black Panther'_s second and third act. The two characters were at the opposite sides of the conflict for Wakanda's rule, which could have made for a fascinating dynamic. But we never got to see them come to blows, albeit for a very quick exchange as the battle was winding down. While both characters got to shine in regards to their relationship to T'Challa and Killmonger, cinephiles could tell something got lost in the shuffle.

During his conversation with The Wrap, Michael Shawver expanded what made the deleted scene from Black Panther so powerful. It turns out it was the scene's layers, as well as the performances by Walking Dead favorite Danai Gurira and _Get Out'_s Daniel Kaluuya.

Those are two powerhouse actors and it was an incredible scene with so many layers to it --- boyfriend and girlfriend, it was general and her advisor, all those things. That was painful.

This really does sound like an awesome scene, so hopefully it'll be available when Black Panther is released for home and digital purchase. Alas, we'll just have to wait and see how it all shakes down.
