Why Pinhead Is Horrors Greatest Icon, According To The New Pinhead

Why Pinhead Is Horrors Greatest Icon, According To The New Pinhead

The horror genre is one of those styles of film that naturally lends itself to the creation of icons. From endlessly iconic, knife-wielding bad guys like Michael Myers in Halloween, to fast-talking creeps like A Nightmare on Elm Street's Freddy Krueger, the world of horror comes chock full of terrifying and iconic personalities. That is something that CinemaBlend touched on in a recent interview with Hellraiser: Judgement's new Pinhead, Paul T. Taylor, and according to the actor, Pinhead is the best horror icon of the bunch because he's far more than just a slasher. Jesus wept, and Taylor explained:

To me, he's least like a slasher. He's not a killing machine. His purpose is to serve a higher God. That changed over the years with some of the lesser-known Hellraiser sequels or lesser-liked Hellraiser sequels. That sort of changed the meaning. Number three, he started becoming more of a slasher. They kind of went the Freddy Krueger route with him and made him the star of the movie, which I personally think was kind of the start of, I don't know, it wasn't my favorite thing in the world to see it... In the first movies, what I would say, to answer your question is, it is his eloquence, and his stillness and the threat is terrifying. All he has to do is stand there, and he's terrifying and that exquisite makeup, that exquisite pain that he's in, it's more twisted.

Paul T. Taylor is the latest actor to step into the Pinhead role (making him the third to take on the mantle since the iconic Doug Bradley stepped down), and he clearly has quite a bit of love for the character. By his estimation, what makes Pinhead work in his best movies is that he operates under a specific ideology and devotes himself to his suffering. Even when he's doing something rooted in pure evil, he's typically doing so because someone opened the puzzle box, and it's his job to deliver the pain they sought out.

Seemingly against the ethos of the character, the "lesser" Hellraiser movies (though it seems that Paul T. Taylor is referring to Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth) eventually tried to move him into Freddy Krueger-esque territory. This involved embracing the goofier immortal slasher tropes that don't quite work anymore, despite the fact that the core of the character lies in his slower and more methodical personality that doesn't rely on racking up a considerable body count or spouting off one-liners. Given Taylor's affinity for the old Pinhead, there's a lot for purists to get excited about with Hellraiser: Judgement's release finally upon us.

Hellraiser: Judgement is now available on Digital HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. Make sure to pick up your copy if you want to see Pinhead's latest dastardly deeds, and take a look at our 2018 movie premiere guide for more up-to-date information about all of this year's biggest movie releases, especially the horror movies to watch out for this year.

Zack Snyder Throws Some Shade At Justice League Over Mustachegate

Zack Snyder Throws Some Shade At Justice League Over Mustachegate

One of the biggest stories leading up to and in the wake of Justice League is the digital removal of Henry Cavill's mustache in the film. The effect was unconvincing and something of a black eye on the film and the beleaguered DC universe as a whole. Everyone has an opinion on the fiasco dubbed 'Mustachegate', but one person we haven't heard from is the primary director of Justice League, Zack Snyder,. While far from an official statement, we now have some idea of his feelings on the matter. The director recently posted a picture of himself rocking a particularly fuzzy face, and after that there was only one direction this thing was going in

Mentioning shaving his facial hair was the most tempting of bait and naturally, someone bit, saying:

@ZackSnyder or you could just remove it via CGI hahahaha

Tee'd up perfectly, Zack Snyder responded succinctly and with a healthy dose of shade towards Justice League, responding,

@EmilianoManliclic we all know that doesn't work

Yikes. It's hard to argue that Zack Snyder's response on Vero wasn't pointed. He could have ignored that comment about removing his facial hair via CGI, but he didn't. He also had to know that any mention of facial hair by him was going to elicit a near Pavlovian response alluding to Mustachegate. It is clear that Zack Snyder is no fan of the CGI used to remove Henry Cavill's mustache in his absence, and it's hard to blame him. The result has been savaged since the film's release and has been a rallying point for criticism of Justice League. So it is understandable if Zack Snyder is a little bitter about what was done after he left the project.

The director suffered an unimaginable personal tragedy and may have been fired from a film that he put years of his life into. Regardless of whether you think his version of Justice League would have been better or not, it is easy to see why he would want to throw some shade at a film that didn't fully represent his vision and still floundered. There is also the fact that if Zack Snyder's original vision had remained intact, there likely wouldn't have been the need for extensive reshoots to change the film's tone. After all, it was the reshoots that conflicted with Henry Cavill's filming on Mission: Impossible - Fallout, and thus necessitated the digital mustache removal and the never-ending saga of the 'stache.

Now that Justice League is out of theaters and coming to home video, I imagine we'll begin to get a better idea of what Zack Snyder's original vision for the film entailed. Many fans are still calling for the Zack Snyder cut to be released, but at this point, that seems unlikely. I don't know if we'll ever hear the whole story from Zack Snyder himself, but right now, it seems clear that he feels no loyalty or need to defend the film. For all the latest in superhero news, stay tuned to CinemaBlend.

11 Great Movies Coming To Netflix In October 2018

11 Great Movies Coming To Netflix In October 2018

As Netflix rotates its streaming library titles month to month, it's always exciting to see what's coming down the road. It's this reason that we greet the prospect with excitement and curiosity every month, and October could be one of the more exciting months we've seen in recent history. If you're curious about what last month's notable titles were, or want to see the full lineup of content heading our way throughout October, you're covered on other pages of ours. However, if you're looking to plan out some prime movie binges within the next month or so, get a load of the best and brightest below.

Anger ManagementAdam Sandler, pitted against the right co-star, is absolute gangbusters. Take Anger Management for example, which puts Sandler's manic energy square in the crosshairs of the master of madness himself, Jack Nicholson. In the movie, a therapist is set on rehabilitating a man who's assigned to him after a random outburst and Nicholson's authoritative brand of insanity compliments Adam Sandler's more chaotic brand of crazy. The results are something that have to be seen to believed.

Black DynamiteMovies that pay homage to a genre while also operating as a prime example of the sort of film they're trying to deconstruct are rare and effective treats. Much like Edgar Wright and Shaun of the Dead, Michael Jai White and Black Dynamite take on the concept of the Blacksploitation film, and turn that into an experience that's both funny and dead on in its execution. What starts out as a fun enough exercise in the genre's formula turns out to be something much sillier, and a whole lot funnier than some may expect. In fact, the conviction with which it's executed is unquestionable.

Blade / Blade IIIt's tough to pick a favorite between the first two Blade movies, as Wesley Snipes' first two entries playing the legendary Daywalker are both so damned good that they remain fan favorites for a reason. And with Halloween heading our way, this is one of the perfect double feature options available to those who want to score some easy scares, with a big dose of action mixed in. It might just come down to whether or not you'd rather see Blade face off against an angsty 90's vampire who wants to rule the world, or a vampire aristocracy that has a secret to hide, and will do anything to protect it. If you have the time, we highly suggest running through both in one shot, as it's more fun that way.

Blazing SaddlesIt certainly isn't the first time that Mel Brooks' Blazing Saddles has been brought to Netflix, and the way it keeps leaving and coming back, we doubt it'll be the last. That's not a complaint though, as there's always room for the madcap humor and razor sharp satire that Sheriff Bart's story has always been known for. If you've seen it before, then this is a good time to see how much of the film you can quote from memory; however, if you've never experienced Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder cleaning up the old west before, you're about to get another shot.

Pee-wee's Big AdventureMost 80s kids will swear by Pee-wee's Big Adventure as a childhood favorite of theirs, and who can blame them? It's a fun adventure romp with colorful happenings, and a sweet, if somewhat annoying, protagonist that cracks up the audience. It's also a bit of a surprise that this became such a hit with kids, as there are some really weird, and straight up scary things that Tim Burton mixes into his directorial debut. This is a confident debut from a man who, with just three films, would define the majority of his career in the 80s, and now you can see why.

The Devil's AdvocateEvery now and then, you need a guilty pleasure movie to cleanse the movie-viewing palette, and The Devil's Advocate is most assuredly one of those films. Is it perfect? No. Is watching Al Pacino ham it up as The Devil, trying to tempt Keanu Reeves into selling his soul a delight? Oh man, is it ever. Full-blown Pacino is on display as he shouts, threatens, and smiles his way through a movie that wouldn't have been as much fun without him, Reeves, or Charlize Theron to make it come alive. This movie is definitely one of my favorite sins and you should give it a watch if you haven't already.

The Green MileStephen King, as anyone can tell you, is a versatile man. Just when you think he's going to scare the wits out of you, he goes and writes something like The Shawshank Redemption or The Green Mile to completely melt your heart, and milk your tear ducts. Frank Darabont works his magic on this second collaboration with King, as Tom Hanks' prison guard befriends a supposedly magical prisoner, played by the late, great Michael Clarke Duncan. Much like Shawshank, The Green Mile takes the prison experience and tells a fairy tale aimed straight at the hearts of grown ups. While it's not talked about as much as its older sibling, it's a film that's earned a rightful place in the history of movies, as well as the King canon.

The ShiningMost people are at least vaguely familiar with The Shining, either having seen the film, understanding its pop culture influence and its connection to Stephen King or having just seen Ready Player One. Age has not dulled its beauty, nor taken the edge off of its familiar scares, rather it has only shown audiences that decades later, The Shining is still one of the most magnetic and atmospheric horror films to ever be printed on film. Pair this one with either The Green Mile or Anger Management for some interesting results, as you'll have a rather interesting Stephen King or Jack Nicholson double feature awaiting your eager eyes.

V for VendettaIf you're like legendary graphic novel creator Alan Moore, you probably don't want anything to do with V for Vendetta. As far as adaptations go, the film takes the source material and uses its name and basic concept as a mask to attract those who've read the acclaimed story into its clutches. Once there though, the film weaves a vastly different but equally compelling story about totalitarianism on the march, and the inherent freedom of the human spirit. Purists need not apply, but if you're open to a film that uses a story's thematic core to tell something more theatrical, you should keep an open mind and watch this cultural touchstone.

Monty Python's Life of BrianOur last film is another case of a lesser talked about entry in a legendary canon. The first film that comes to mind when you mention Monty Python is unmistakably Monty Python and The Holy Grail. Not a bad choice of films to be remembered by, but when it comes to second place in the stellar career of the comedy troupe, it's usually a toss up between Meaning of Life, and this month's selection, Life of Brian. That needs to be corrected, as neither of those films is a runner-up by any means, with Brian telling a roaringly funny story about a man who could have been the messiah, if he wasn't such a naughty boy. It's subtle, focused Python that digs into religious testament, rather than broadly funny humor, but it works like a damned charm.

Netflix's 6 Balloons Trailer Teases A Dark And Emotional Performance By Dave Franco

Netflix's 6 Balloons Trailer Teases A Dark And Emotional Performance By Dave Franco

At this point in his career, it wouldn't be unfair to say that Dave Franco is best known as a comedic actor and the younger brother of James Franco. But while his most famous roles are probably in Now You See Me, 21 Jump Street and Neighbors, Dave Franco is continuing to branch out beyond those types of films, and his latest role looks to be his most emotionally powerful yet. Dave Franco stars opposite Broad City's Abbi Jacobson in Netflix's 6 Balloons, and based on the trailer, he is turning in a dark and powerful performance.

This trailer certainly gets dark quick and shows that this will probably not be an easy film to watch. What's effective about this trailer is that it shows Dave Franco's character, Seth, being a bright and happy person and having fun with his sister and daughter before we learn what's really going on: he's a heroin addict. We don't find out a lot about him here, but we do see quick glimpses of Seth going through withdrawal and begging for another fix. Dave Franco looks to be giving a raw and emotional performance here as Seth struggles with his addiction as it impacts the lives of those around him.

6 Balloons seems to be telling this story from Abbi Jacobson's Katie's perspective. Her character is in the extremely difficult position of having someone she loves at the mercy of his own addiction. Katie confronting Seth about his addiction is an incredibly tough situation to be in, and one that unfortunately many people have had to experience. Katie always wants to believe in him and hope that he can overcome this, and as a result she winds up enabling him. By the looks of the trailer, Seth's life isn't the only one put in danger as a result of his addiction.

Netflix's original movies have gained a lot of attention of late, as the streaming service has pumped out buzzworthy and flashy titles from exciting creatives, only for those films to fall short critically. 6 Balloons comes from writer and director Marja-Lewis Ryan, and this is the kind of independent-type film that the Netflix model allows for. A small film from a relatively unknown director about heroin addiction isn't exactly box office gold, but hopefully with the opioid epidemic remaining a real issue in America, this movie will provide a nuanced take on the subject, showing that addicts do not exist in a vacuum, but they are people with families who care about them.

In addition to 6 Balloons, Dave Franco next stars in his brother's The Disaster Artist follow-up, Zeroville, and then he joins Oscar-winner and Moonlight director Barry Jenkins next film, If Beale Street Could Talk. 6 Balloons premieres on Netflix April 6. Check out our guide to see all the biggest Netflix original movies hitting the service in the near future.
