Could The Sinister Six Movie Still Happen? Heres What Drew Goddard Says

Back when the Amazing Spider-Man film series was still going, Sony was planning to release several films to turn this franchise into a cinematic universe, Sinister Six being one of these movies. But once The Amazing Spider-Man 2 underperformed and Sony teamed up with Marvel Studios to bring the Web-Slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sinister Six was shelved. Four years later, Drew Goddard still looks back fondly at his time writing Sinister Six and notes that perhaps there will come a day where his movie becomes a reality. In Goddard's words:

It was really fun. I wouldn't have done it had I not thought there was a real opportunity to do something different and exciting and just flat-out bananas. It was very much me and --- a much more commercial version of --- the Cabin mentality. The punk rock mentality that led to Cabin is very much at the core of Sinister Six. That's a fun one. Who knows, it could see the light of day. It's funny, I've been through a lot of volatility at a lot of different studios. Between MGM and Sony and Fox. At a certain point, you start to realize, 'Oh, this is just a volatile business' and you try to stay afloat as the boat rocks back and forth.

The movie-making world is indeed volatile, especially when it comes to the superhero genre. Sony was so sure that the Amazing Spider-Man continuity was going to grow, and less than half a decade later, Tom Holland's Spider-Man is one of the most important characters in the MCU. So even though Sinister Six has been gathering dust, as Drew Goddard mentioned to THR, perhaps his script might be dusted off at some point if enough things change.

Whether or not Drew Goddard's Sinister Six movie ever sees the light of day, seeds have already been planted for the super villain team to possibly introduced into the MCU. In the Spider-Man: Homecoming mid-credits scene, Mac Gargan, better known in the comics as The Scorpion, found Michael Keaton's Adrian Toomes, a.k.a. Vulture, in prison and mentioned he and several others on the outside wanted to get revenge on Spider-Man. So perhaps in a third MCU Spider-Man movie or beyond, this sinister group of six villains will officially band together.

Then there's Sony universe of Spider-Man characters, which kicked off last weekend with the release of Venom and will include movies like Morbius and Kraven the Hunter. Given that there's been no official announcement of Spider-Man, whether he's played by Tom Holland or a brand-new version, being involved in this particular franchise, it's difficult to imagine how a Sinister Six movie could work without the Wall-Crawler being present. Then again, perhaps the story could be adjusted to work with a different hero, like Silk or Miles Morales.

The Spider-Man saga will continue when Spider-Man: Far From Home spins its web in theaters on July 5, 2019. For the Drew Goddard fans out there, his latest directorial endeavor, Bad Times at the El Royale, is now playing in theaters.

Solo: A Star Wars Story Has Screened, Here Are The Early Reactions

Though we are still over a year away from the release of Star Wars: Episode IX and the culmination of the stories told in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, there's still another Star Wars story on the way. Specifically, we're talking about Solo: A Star Wars Story, which finally screened for audiences at its premiere this evening. CinemaBlend's own Eric Eisenberg was in attendance at the event, and he took to Twitter after the screening to share his thoughts on the film. According to Eric: Solo is fine, but not great. Eric wrote:

So, it seems that there's some solid stuff to dig into in this movie. Eric enjoyed himself watching Solo: A Star Wars Story, but the movie has to contend with the constant need to justify its own existence. A vocal section of the fanbase wondered why we would even need to see certain elements of Han's early years on the big screen, and that's apparently something that continues to hang over the movie even as it screens. Nevertheless, Eric's tweet confirms that the movie is fun, and it really picks up steam as it moves and unloads classic references on audiences.

This is an opinion shared by Collider's Perri Nemiroff. After attending the premiere, Perri similarly took to social media and offered praise specifically for Donald Glover's portrayal of Lando Calrissian and Phoebe Waller-Bridge's portrayal of L3. Perri wrote:

Of course, while some of these reactions have been tempered by criticisms, other members of the audiences have taken to social media to share their elation over the film. In fact, Yahoo's Kevin Poloway tweeted his reaction to Solo: A Star Wars Story, and he noted that the film delivers by telling a heist story and shifting gears away from things like the Death Star and the rebellion. Kevin said:

Finally, we round out our roundup with one of the most enthusiastic responses of the evening. io9's Germain Lussier tweeted his reaction to Solo: A Star Wars Story after the premiere, and he had nothing but good things to say about it. Per Germain's tweet:

Now, with all of those reactions in mind (not to mention all of the other reactions that are sure to pop up online in the coming days), we are now in the home stretch as we race towards the May 25 release date for Solo: A Star Wars Story. Make sure to catch the movie when it finally premieres, and keep an eye out for all of CinemaBlend's up-to-date coverage on the latest Star Wars anthology film.

Disney Hit A Box Office Record, But Which Movies Didn't Make Money?

Disney Hit A Box Office Record, But Which Movies Didn't Make Money?

Disney has been the studio to beat at the box office and for the last three years, nobody has been able to do it. In 2018, Disney set a domestic box office record with a take of $3.092 billion, largely thanks to the fact that it had half of the top 10 movies of the year, including Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, and Incredibles 2, in the top three slots. Of course, it could have been an even bigger year, but not every Disney movie was a massive hit.

The biggest disappointment for Disney in 2018 was, without a doubt, Solo: A Star Wars Story. The film barely broke the $200 million mark domestically and came up just short of $400 million around the world. While those numbers would be solid, even great, for most movies, they're a franchise low for the Star Wars brand. While the movie was the tenth highest grossing movie of the year domestically, when you're talking about Star Wars, that's low.

On top of the lower than usual box office take, you have the fact that Solo was an incredibly expensive movie to make. The hiring of a new director in the middle of production, and the fact that the transition led to a longer than planned shooting schedule, certainly increased Solo's cost, to the point that not only did the movie not make normal Star Wars money, it probably wasn't profitable at all for Disney.

However, that's not the only movie that didn't work out for Disney. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms was Disney's most unusual movie of the year, in that the film barely seemed to even make much of an impact. It's quite rare that a Disney movie would arrive in theaters without audiences even really noticing. It seems clear that the studio knew that Nutcracker was unlikely to be very successful, and so the decision was made to save money on marketing. The movie only grossed $54 million domestically and didn't break $170 million across the world.

Apparently, simply opening a movie with Nutcracker in the title around the holidays doesn't guarantee ticket sales. The movie was clearly having some difficulties early on as the film has two credited directors. After the original director, Lasse Hallstrom, was unavailable to direct unscheduled reshoots, Captain America: The First Avenger director Joe Johnston was brought in.

The other big letdown of 2018 was A Wrinkle in Time. The adaptation of the popular novel was highly anticipated. It was the first time a female African-American director helmed a movie with a budget over $100 million. While the film cast numerous fresh faces, it also included major stars like Oprah Winfrey in key roles. In the end, however, the audience just didn't show up. The film made $100 million in North America and while it could have been saved by overseas numbers, they just didn't happen. It only saw $32 million total from all other countries.

While production budgets are never public, and industry accounting is always a black box, it seems those are probably the three Disney films from 2018 that actually lost money for the studio. Other films, like Christopher Robin, were not smash hits, but between respectable box office numbers, and modest budgets, were likely still financial successes.

One piece of trivia which can give a bit of perspective on all this. Nutcracker, A Wrinkle in Time and Christopher Robin all made less money domestically in 2018 than Star Wars: The Last Jedi did. Even if we only look at the money the film made starting from January 1, it still out performed those three movies in their entire runs.

One movie that the jury is still out on is Mary Poppins Returns. The movie just barely broke the $100 million mark before the new year started, and while the film's run is far from over, it's been competing with Aquaman and Bumblebee in theaters and has been losing to the former. While the movie will likely be profitable when it's all said and done, the movie has a reported budget of $130 million, and has made an additional $100 million overseas, one certainly has to wonder if expectations were higher considering the name recognition of the title.

By comparison, in 2017 Disney made about $600 million less in domestic box office totals, but its lowest grossing film of the year was Cars 3, which earned $152 million domestically and $383 million globally, so nothing that came out lost the studio money. 2018 may have brought Disney more income, but it might not have been as profitable.

One thing Disney's box office total shows is the increasing way that all studios have begun to put all their eggs in fewer baskets. Disney's record total, as reported by EW, saw almost two-thirds of it come from those top three films. After Incredibles 2's $600 million take, the number four movie for Disney was Ant-Man and the Wasp which only brought in $216 million. That's a huge gap, to say the least. If any of those top three films had faltered, even a little, Disney wouldn't be having quite the same celebration that the studio is currently having.

The growing focus on blockbuster and franchise filmmaking is great when it works, bigger success means you can make fewer films and risk less, but if and when a shift occurs and those films begin to falter, it's going to hurt that much more because there won't be other films to cushion the fall.

Alternatively, One could only imagine what kind of totals Disney could put up if Solo: A Star Wars Story had been as successful as Rogue One or if A Wrinkle in Time had been the breakout hit many were expecting. We could be talking an additional $300 million or more on top of what all the other movies did.

It will be interesting to see what 2019 brings for the House of Mouse, with two big finale movies set, with Avengers: Endgame and Star Wars Episode IX, this record-setting year might not be a record for very long.

New Once Upon A Deadpool Video Has Fred Savage Hilariously Interrogating Wade

New Once Upon A Deadpool Video Has Fred Savage Hilariously Interrogating Wade

When it was announced that Deadpool, the distinctly R-rated Merc with a Mouth, was getting a PG-13 cut of Deadpool 2, the collective sentiment was 'Huh?' We had questions, and in the latest bit of marketing for the film, a captive Fred Savage tries to get answers. Take a look at the video below to see Fred Savage, hilariously interrogating Wade Wilson.

We won't know until December 12 how well Deadpool 2 works as a PG-13 film, but the marketing for Once Upon a Deadpool is just as hilarious and brilliant as anything else we've seen from this franchise. The Fred Savage/Deadpool dynamic is very funny, as here we see the Wonder Years star asking the foul-mouthed Merc the questions that need asking, both about himself and about Once Upon a Deadpool.

Deadpool's responses to Fred Savage's personal questions are great and totally self-deprecatory as we've come to expect from the character. Fred Savage really gets to the heart of the matter though with Once Upon a Deadpool, asking Wade the question we all want to know 'Why PG-13?'

Wade's response about money and Disney are great because they're exactly the motivations many suspected when we first heard about Once Upon a Deadpool, making them totally on brand for the meta character. I also would not be surprised to hear more Disney jokes in the film itself, given the fact that it's all but certain that the Merc with a Mouth and Mickey Mouse will soon be sharing an office.

Deadpool's answer about money being the motivation for the PG-13 Once Upon a Deadpool is funny because we all know it's true, but it doesn't quite tell the whole story. Being that this is a "family movie" and it's the holidays, Once Upon a Deadpool isn't just a pure cash grab. That's because for every ticket sold, $1 goes to the charity Fuck Cancer, which has changed its name to Fudge Cancer, in keeping with the PG-13-ness of Once Upon a Deadpool.

Wade Wilson/Ryan Reynolds (the line between them is quite blurred) says that he is a fan of The Princess Bride, but as you can see from Ryan Reynold's tweet, he's also a fan of another '80s classic kids movie: Uncle Buck.

In that film, Macaulay Culkin's Miles interrogates his Uncle Buck, played by the late, great John Candy, upon first meeting him, much as Fred Savage does to Deadpool here. And Miles was also very curious about his Uncle's living arrangements in his line of consecutive questions.

So this video for Once Upon a Deadpool, has Fred Savage, in the bedroom from A Princess Bride, paying homage to Uncle Buck, while questioning Deadpool. That's nostalgia, wrapped in meta nostalgia, wrapped in a superhero sequel. Ladies and gentlemen, that is a nesting doll of holiday goodness.

As to whether or not audiences will, as Fred Savage queries, 'be stupid enough to swallow this,' we'll find out when Once Upon a Deadpool opens on December 12. Hop aboard the hype train for next year's biggest movies by checking out our 2019 release schedule, and for all the latest movie news, stay tuned to CinemaBlend.
