Avengers: Infinity War left the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a dark place, and while Ant-Man and the Wasp gave us a self-contained adventure set right before its immediate predecessor, it ended up touching on the Thanos snap as well. We'll find out how this arc wraps up in Avengers 4 next year, but before that happens, the MCU is winding the clock back to the 1990s for Captain Marvel, which will show how Carol Danvers went from Air Force pilot to powerful superhero. Back in July, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige mentioned that Captain Marvel will tap into the '90s action genre, and now he's elaborated that Terminator 2: Judgement Day was a particularly important inspiration for the following reasons:

At surface level, Terminator 2 and Captain Marvel don't have much in common, as one movie is about a robot assassin sent back in time to protect a boy and his mother from another robot assassin, while the other movie (from what little we know) is about a superhero who gains her abilities from an accident involving alien technology. But going off this brief quote from Kevin Feige to Total Film, it sounds like Captain Marvel's more exciting moments will pull from James Cameron's 1991 classic sci-fi film. Though as far as the car chases part goes, that perhaps shouldn't be taken literally, as Feige also mentioned that much of Captain Marvel takes place in outer space. Given that one of Carol's impressive abilities is flight, I suspect that we'll see her dodging and taking out alien vehicles on her tail. In any case, of all the '90s action movies to look to for influence, Terminator 2 is definitely one of the strongest choices.
With six months to go until Captain Marvel's release, no specific plot details have been revealed about the movie other than that it will depict Carol Danvers' origin story and show her getting caught between two warring alien species, the Kree and the Skrulls. As Kevin Feige mentioned, Captain Marvel will be one of the more cosmic-oriented MCU movies, but there will be some time spent on Earth, where Carol crosses paths with characters like Nick Fury and Phil Coulson. We'll also learn why Carol hasn't been around for any of the MCU's biggest present day events, and two months after Captain Marvel drops, Carol will return in Avengers 4 to aid the surviving heroes in their efforts to undo what Thanos did with the six Infinity Stones.
