Alamo Drafthouse Is Opening A Video Rental Store With A Unique Twist

The Alamo Drafthouse movie theater chain is famous among film fans for its Mondo posters, special screenings and requirement that you maintain proper etiquette. The theater chain has gained a loyal following, catering to the most dedicated of cinephiles and boasting serious indy cred. Now the Alamo Drafthouse will be taking that hipster vibe and feeding our millennial craving for nostalgia by opening its own video rental store. But Alamo Drafthouse isn't an ordinary theater, and this won't be just any video rental store. Every single one of the store's 75,000 movies will be available to rent... for free.

Man, how did Blockbuster Video not think of this? The store will be called Video Vortex, and the first location is set to open in Raleigh, North Carolina sometime this year. And lest you think this is a non-profit venture for the cinephile in need, the business plans to make its money in ways other than video rentals. According to Entertainment Weekly, Video Vortex will have DVD players, Blu-ray players and even VCRs (Google it) available to rent for a fee. Those who have ever looked for a decent, working VCR to play an old, obscure movie or transfer home videos to digital knows that they are not easy to come by.

The retail venture will also sell board games, memorabilia, food and, because this is the Alamo Drafthouse, beer. Similar to the movie theater model, the movies will get the customer in the door, at which point they can spend money on these other items. Ok, that just looks insanely cool. Maybe I'm just a nostalgia mark, but the shared space that was a video rental store is where so many of us discovered our love for movies in the first place. This whole thing is just aiming for a communal, arcade vibe as it is part bar, restaurant, retail store, board game caf and video rental shop. The whole thing seems dedicated to film culture and history, as well as uniting people with other movie fans in a place where they can introduce each other to new things. The 75,000 titles that Video Vortex boasts will encompass a wide range of cinematic tastes, from popular action films and the oeuvres of various auteurs to foreign films and bizarre stuff that never made the jump from VHS.

The Alamo Drafthouse has primarily been a Texas and Southern venture, but the chain is branching out all across the country. The folks there are clearly onto something and are tapping into an audience looking for a different theatergoing experience. Alamo Drafthouse is playing to its audience with Video Vortex, but it is cool to see someone putting a new spin on a concept that technology killed. And hey, vinyl has made a major comeback, so maybe there is still a place in our streaming world for a store where you talk with other people and rent movies.

Venom's Pre-Ticket Sales Are Beating Out Some Of The MCU's Recent Movies

The critical reaction towards Venom may not be great overall so far, but on the commercial side of things, the movie looks like it's going to be a powerhouse performer. Last month, it was estimated that Venom could kick off domestically in the $55-$85 million range, and as of yesterday, Eddie Brock's standalone adventure is predicted to have a global opening weekend haul of between $160-$175 million. Now word's come in that Venom is also doing quite well with regards to advance ticket sales, so much so that it's outselling recent Marvel Cinematic Universe movies Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Ant-Man and the Wasp.

While the above three movies weren't the heaviest of hitters in the MCU lineup, like most of their ilk, they nonetheless commercially successful, so Venom is outpacing them in pre-sales is quite the accomplishment. As if that weren't impressive enough, Atom Tickets also noted in its report that among all Marvel movies, i.e. both the Marvel Studios entries and stories made by other studios that carry the Marvel banner, Venom ranks in third place, with Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther making up the top 2. Looking outside of the comic book realm, the majority of people buying Venom tickets ahead of time on Atom Tickets fall into the 18-29 age range, so clearly a lot of young'uns are itching for some big screen, symbiote-enhanced action. As for why Venom is killing it with pre-sales, Atom Tickets editorial lead Alisha Grauso noted that even though the movie has been getting mixed reviews, there's still a lot of excitement to see this newest live action take on the character and how Tom Hardy handles the role.

Although every movie aims to be both critically and commercially successful, sometimes one doesn't always lead to the other. In Venom's case, if the early reviews are any indication, it's won't go down in history as one of the best comic book movies, but on the money front, there won't be any issues. I imagine another reason a lot of folks are eager to watch Venom is to see how Eddie Brock's origin story is handled without Spider-Man being around. That, along with the other characters and plenty of action, provides numerous reasons for people to check out Venom this weekend, though it should also be noted that Venom's opening weekend competition, A Star is Born, is also doing well in pre-sales, outperforming Oscar contenders like The Big Sick, The Shape of Water, and Call Me By Your Name.

Putting out a few successful movies, then selling while their worth is high would be a better plan and future-proof them a bit. If they sold back to Marvel/Disney, then they could gain Disney stock that's only going to raise in value; they could also sign some sort of exclusivity deal wherein SONY makes the games based on Marvel properties.

Fans of Deadpool became concerned recently when reports from test screenings of Deadpool 2 claimed the movie had serious problems. Negasonic Teenage Warhead has now arrived to help everybody calm down. Brianna Hildebrand was recently asked about the reshoots for Deadpool 2 which seemed to be taking place immediately following rumors that audiences at test screenings didn't care for the upcoming sequel. According to her, the test screenings were fine, and the reshoots took place in order to add more of things the audiences liked, not change or remove things they didn't. According to Hildebrand...

No, it was nothing that had gone wrong. I think it's a common misconception too -- that people think that reshoots are to fix things that people didn't like. A lot of the time, reshoots are to add more of the things that people loved. [Filmmakers] watch their films again and are like "better fix that." I don't know how much I can say about that.

While it's certainly true that reshoots can be undertaken to fix negative criticism, Brianna Hildebrand is absolutely right that they can also be used to accentuate the positive. If there was a character or element that audiences really gravitated toward, things may change in order to give more screen time than was originally planned to that element.

It was last week when the reshoots on Deadpool 2 were confirmed via Josh Brolin amid rumors that the test screenings on the film had gone poorly. Information was sketchy, and most was second hand, as test audiences are required to stay quiet about their experiences, but the prevailing rumor was that Deadpool 2 had some problems. Of course, since we don't have any details beyond rumors, it's possible that the truth of the situation got a little lost in the translation. If it was felt that the movie needed more of something, one person could look at the lack of that something as a bad thing, while somebody else could focus on the fact that they liked that something, and just wanted to see more of it. It's possible that the characters of Cable and/or Domino turned out really well and viewers just wanted to see more of them and less of Deadpool himself.

Brianna Hildebrand told ScreenGeek that she didn't want to talk too much about reshoots because she knows people automatically assume the worst simply in bringing up the topic of reshoots, even though she says there's really nothing to worry about here. Hopefully, fans of the Merc with a Mouth can now relax a little bit. Reshoots are common practice and while they may very well have been things that audiences didn't love about the film, it doesn't mean that all hope is lost.
