Apparently, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Features Some Awesome E.T. Easter Eggs

The following contains minor spoilers for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

The Jurassic Park franchise has come a long way since Steven Spielberg left the director's chair. However, the film series' most recent installment paid tribute to the man with easter eggs dedicated to another of his classics. It turns out that Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom included a few references to E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial. J.A. Bayona, director of the next film which saw Speilberg on board as an executive producer, is an admitted Spielberg fan and he recently revealed several call outs to the film, one obvious, and the others a bit less so.

The first is actually visible in the image above. We see the character of Maisie, a young girl who is the granddaughter of the man who sends our heroes on the adventure to rescue the dinosaurs. Maisie spends a large portion of the movie wearing a red hoodie, which is meant to evoke the image of Henry Thomas' Elliot from E.T. who wears the same item of clothing during that film's finale.

The second is a bit more obvious, though potentially harder to see. Late in the film, Maisie runs away from the Indoraptor and hides in her room. Unsurprisingly, the dinosaur finds here and a fight ensues. Maisie's room is full of toys, likely gifts from her doting grandfather, and one of them, J.A. Bayona tells Yahoo, is an E.T. figure.

In the dinosaur fight in Maisie's room, there's a lot of toys, and if you take a look at the toys, you will see there's an E.T. character there. You try to have fun, but at the same time you try to integrate that nostalgia into the story you're telling.

It's actually somewhat fitting. Without going too deep into spoilers, it makes some sense that Maisie's toys would include characters from movies in the mid-1980s. While E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial has certainly stood the test of time and is likely seen by lots of kids, there probably aren't that many new E.T. toys being produced, but there's a reason that one might be in the house.

Finally, the last shot of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom provides a third E.T. easter egg, though this one is a bit meta. The end of the film shows Blue the raptor standing atop a bluff overlooking a fairly normal looking subdivision. As it turns out, the neighborhood Blue is checking out is the exact same one where E.T. was filmed.

That's a lot of cool E.T. references for the serious fan. If you haven't seen Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom yet, you can look for them all in theaters now.

There was a lot of conversation going into the 90th Academy Awards this year. The movie industry went through a lot last year with the rise of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, the ousting of Harvey Weinstein and a dozen other men accused of sexual harassment and assault. There's also the matter of last year's high-profile calamity involving Best Picture, so returning host Jimmy Kimmel had a lot of topics to tackle. Kimmel did indeed tackle all of these subjects with some hard and honest jokes and we felt that these were the three best from the host's opening monologue.

You knew going into tonight that there was no way that Jimmy Kimmel wasn't going to address the single worst moment in Oscar history when presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were given the wrong card and famously named La La Land as Best Picture instead of Moonlight. The Academy has worked hard to move past that moment, but Kimmel had just a little advice for anyone who gets called to the stage tonight. As he put it:

This year when you hear your name called, don't get up right away. Give us a minute. We don't want another thing.

Second, one of the biggest stories from the tail-end of last year was the report there was a huge pay discrepancy between Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Williams for the reshoots of All the Money in the World. While Wahlberg received over a million dollars, Williams was only paid $80 dollars per day. Wahlberg went on to donate that money, but the fact that the two of them were represented by the same agency didn't make things better. Hollywood agents don't have the best reputation when it comes to honesty, something Kimmel was happy to point out in a joke that played very well in a room full of actors. Kimmel said:

I have to admit, this story really surprised me. This one shook me because if we can't trust agents, who can we trust?

Finally, everyone knows that Oscar speeches can tend to run long. Hey, it's a long show, but that's why it has a host to help move things along. This year, Kimmel wants to make this the shortest ceremony as possible. Rather than play people off the stage, he challenged all the winners with a contest: whoever has the shortest speech at the end of the night will win a free jet ski! The jet ski was brought out on stage, and it had Helen Mirren with it and everything! (Helen Mirren is not included with jet ski.)

This being his second time hosting the Oscars show, Kimmel was a bit more relaxed, but had to tackle some heavy subject matter. That's hard to do and be funny at the same time, but Kimmel showed that he knew how to get serious at the appropriate moment as well. There was more material that Kimmel covered, but it's a long night and the comedian is bound to have more jokes. Plus, we have to see who takes home the jet ski!

Will An Optimus Prime Transformers Spinoff Happen? Heres What The Producer Says

The Transformers franchise is one of the most successful in cinematic history, earning billions at the box office. So naturally, as is the trend in this day and age, Paramount seems to be hoping to build out a cinematic universe with spinoff films about characters from the main saga. The first of those films, Bumblebee, hits theaters at the end of the year. As far as other possible spinoffs, the character with the most name value, more than even Bumblebee, is franchise hero Optimus Prime. So will the Autobot leader get his own spinoff movie? Here's what Transformers franchise producer, Lorenzo di Bonaventura has to say:

I'd certainly like to do that. It would be a very different kind of movie than a Bumblebee movie, but equally interesting and different.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura certainly sounds open to it, and you would have to imagine that Optimus Prime would be pretty much at the top of Paramount's list of characters that could potentially support their own movie. I imagine that Paramount already has some ideas for an Optimus Prime movie, and is probably just waiting to see how Bumblebee performs to see if any adjustments need to be made and give the go ahead. Yet, as Lorenzo di Bonaventura tells Entertainment Weekly, such a film would have to be quite different than the upcoming Bumblebee, in part due to the distinctions between the types of characters Bumblebee and Optimus Prime are.

He's a stoic leader, and you can count on him. Whereas Bumblebee is the one who is more emotionally volatile. He has a lot of ups and downs. So it seemed like the best character to try for the first time zeroing in on one Autobot.

Bumblebee is a more emotional character, and that's part of what makes his solo outing interesting. He won't be a part of some bigger team, but be on his own. And because of how Bumblebee wears his heart on his sleeve and has the most human emotions, we will be able to connect with him as a character in a way that we might not have with Prime. The Optimus Prime we have seen in the movies is often the moral center of the films and the stalwart hero, so a movie focusing on him would demand a different approach. If Bumblebee is the heart of the Transformers, Optimus Prime is the soul. The two characters are very different, but that's what could make their respective spinoffs interesting, they would not feel like the same movie.

Personally, I'm not sure how a solo Optimus Prime film would work, considering that he has basically been the hero of the films thus far. So, in a way, they all were Optimus Prime stories. On the other hand, I didn't expect to like the new Bumblebee trailer, but was pleasantly surprised to see a different, more personal tone that teases a movie more akin to E.T. about a girl and her friend, similar to the beginning of the first Transformers film, than the subsequent ones that just increased the scale of the flying alien junkyards each time out. If an Optimus Prime spinoff film can also subvert expectations and tell a story that feels different and necessary to move this franchise forward, then I'd be open to it.

The first Transformers spinoff film Bumblebee is directed by Kubo and the Two Strings director Travis Knight, and starring Oscar nominee Hailee Steinfeld and John Cena.
