The Predator Reviews: What CinemaBlend Thought Of The New Sequel

It's been eight years since the last entry in the storied Predator franchise. Now, Shane Black, who co-starred in the 1987 original, takes his turn behind the camera as the co-writer and director. How does the new entry in the series stack up against the previous installments? The crew here at CinemaBlend has seen the new action/horror title and while, like most things, we don't agree perfectly, the general consensus could be summed up as, "a fun time with a movie that has some serious problems." In my review of The Predator for CinemaBlend, I summed it up like this...

In the end, while I can't say I loved The Predator, I also can't say that I didn't enjoy the hell out of The Predator. While I can't shake the feeling this movie wanted to be something more, I can't say I didn't have a good time with what it was.

The Predator is an incredibly fast-paced movie, it moves so quickly from one action beat to the next, that it clearly had to cut out some of its own story to keep things from slowing down. It's clearly been edited with a machete rather than a scalpel. If, however, you're here to be swept up in the brutal kills and the non-stop one-liners, there is fun to be had in that.

CinemaBlend managing Director Sean O'Connell's feelings fell pretty close to my own. While he admits the movie has its issues is, mostly in the third act. He overall had a fun time with the movie and the parts that worked.

Shane Black's The Predator might be the best sequel in this franchise -- though, let's be clear, that bar was very, very low. This one feels like a throwback to the goofy practical effects of the 1980s, and the contributions of Black and co-writer Fred Dekker likely contribute to the gory, silly mood. Yes, the whole thing goes off the rails in the last act, but I had a lot more fun with this chapter in the Predator saga than I anticipated, with Keegan-Michael Key and Sterling K. Brown owning pretty much every scene that they are in.

Our Events Editor Eric Eisenberg is probably the harshest critic of The Predator here at CinemaBlend. Whereas Sean overall had fun with the film but recognized some shortcomings, Eric recognizes some bright spots, but overall was disappointed.

While Shane Black is recognized as one of the wittiest, most clever screenwriters in the industry, The Predator feels like a too-late throwback that ultimately falls flat. Though it moves at a quick pace, has some cool, shocking moments, and some solid performances, it's also weighed down by messy storytelling, underdeveloped characters, and a rushed third act.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Senior Contributor Mike Reyes probably enjoyed the film the most on our team. He thought The Predator was bloody, funny, and bloody funny.

The Predator is the closest, and probably best, sequel we've ever gotten in the Predator saga. Shane Black brings the franchise back to the sort of smart assed action that only he could bring to the screen, and while that's sometimes a detriment to the film (especially when taking into account one joke in particular that's going to split the audience right down the middle) it definitely helps it fit right in with the rest. It's bloody, it's funny, and it's what every R-rated summer movie wishes it could be.

In conclusion, it seems like The Predator is a funny and violent action movie with some significant issues with its storytelling. The question for the audience will be, do those bright spots overshadow the problems the movie has? For most of us here at CinemaBlend they did, but the audience will speak when The Predator opens tomorrow.

The Predator Reviews: What CinemaBlend Thought Of The New

Shane Black's "The Predator" is a fun, brutal, fighting machine that wastes no time getting down to business—not unlike its title character. It's not big on wasted dialogue or too many attempts at meta humor, playing both like an homage/throwback film to the action of the '80s and something that feels new and fresh.

Deadpool Just Poked Fun At The Infinity War Spoiler Threat With His Own Version

Deadpool Just Poked Fun At The Infinity War Spoiler Threat With His Own Version

Not everybody likes spoilers. Most fans prefer to come into their movies without knowing important details in order to enjoy the cinematic experience and be surprised by every twist and turn. Marvel made a plea to fans to avoid spoiling Avengers: Infinity War for others, and now Ryan Reynolds has done the same with his new movie. Of course, as you might expect, the letter written by Deadpool asking fans not to spoil Deadpool 2 is quite a bit funnier than the one the Russos sent out. Enjoy it below.

The Russo Brothers and other members of the Marvel Universe posted a letter to fans using the hashtag #ThaosDemandsYourSilence as a way to encourage the fans who saw Avengers: Infinity War early to keep spoilers away from those who would see it later so that everybody could enjoy the movie equally. Deadpool 2 seems to be trying to do the same thing, but, of course, the creative team is being ridiculous about it. In addition, Ryan Reynolds' hashtag is quite a bit longer. It's a good thing Twitter expanded the character limit.

It's difficult to decide what the best part of this letter is. Personally, I'm a fan of the 20th Century Fox logo being crossed out in the letterhead and replaced with TBD, because Fox is in the process of selling off its movie studio, and while the expectation has been that Disney will be taking over, late word is that Comcast hasn't given up quite yet, so nobody really knows where all this is going. Deadpool works for somebody, but he doesn't know who yet.

Then you've got the massive gloved hand holding the note, as the Avengers version also had, though this one adds a bunch of additional tiny hands, and paws. It's unclear if that's supposed to be a baby's hand or a mid-regeneration Deadpool limb.

From there we get into the plea to avoid spoilers, that includes the claim that even Ryan Reynolds doesn't know the plot of the movie. To be fair, the marketing for Deadpool 2 had done such a good job at just focusing on Ryan Reynolds being silly that the team was able to get pretty far without revealing much of anything regarding the plot, besides the fact that Josh Brolin was in it as Cable. More recently we have learned that the story will revolve around Cable's attempts to kill a child mutant, and Deadpool's decision to act as the kid's bodyguard.

That being said, beyond that basic setup there's a lot we don't know, and just because Deadpool 2 may focus as much on the comedy as the superhero action doesn't mean that people don't want to go into the movie just as spoiler free as they did with Avengers: Infinity War. Comedy is less funny the second time around and if for that reason alone we don't want to hear all the good jokes before we make it to the theater.

If the movie is half as funny as the letter, we should be in pretty good shape. Deadpool 2 hits theaters on May 18.

Groundhog Day takes something of a darker turn when you look at it that way; I believe Columbia Pictures got nervous at this kind of mind-fuck showing up in one of their romantic comedies and put out the official line that Phil was only stuck in there for two weeks or something like that. Original Michael Myers Actor Nick Castle Would Be Down For Another Halloween Sequel

Original Michael Myers Actor Nick Castle Would Be Down For Another Halloween Sequel

While the latest Halloween movie was a nearly complete reboot for the franchise, which had previously seen numerous sequels, the success of the movie means that a potential sequel to this new film is very much a possibility. Nick Castle played Michael Myers in the original Halloween and had a part to play in the new sequel as well, and if another Halloween movie does happen, he's up for that one too. According to Castle...

I'd love to do it. I mean, it would probably still have to be in the same kind of parameters. I don't see myself at two in the morning putting on the mask and getting a chair thrown at me like poor James Jude Courtney had to do.

Nick Castle only donned the iconic Michael Myers mask in a single scene of the new Halloween. Obviously, it was essentially impossible to tell it was him, but he did get a chance to cameo as the killer briefly when Jamie Lee Curtis sees Michael for the first time in the new movie. The rest of the time, Myers was portrayed by James Jude Courtney., who did all the more action-oriented work.

Nick Castle tells Comicbook.com that he'd love to be part of a Halloween sequel, on the condition that a similar arrangement can be made. The 71-year-old writer/director/actor certainly isn't looking to go through what he did in the original film, but if he can be part of the film in a low-impact way, he's in.

At this point, it seems like there's a pretty good chance that Nick Castle will have a shot in appearing in a Halloween sequel. While Blumhouse says it's not currently working on a sequel, co-writer Danny McBride has said he has ideas for one, and Jamie Lee Curtis has said that as long as director David Gordon Green returns to helm a sequel, she'd also be willing to return.

On the one hand, a Halloween sequel seems like the most natural thing in the world considering the success of the movie. However, considering that the new Halloween took the unique step of discounting all Halloween sequels that have been made, making itself a direct continuation of the original film, making a sequel to it becomes somewhat ironic.

Still, the film's box office and reviews show that there is certainly still an appetite for the Halloween franchise as many considered the newest film one of the best in the series. If a sequel can keep that success going, there's little reason not to do so.

If all the right people are willing to return, there's a good chance we'll get that sequel, and Nick Castle will probably be welcomed back for another brief cameo.

Happy Death Day 2U Reviews Are Up, Heres What Critics Are Saying

Christoper Landon's Happy Death Day was a legitimate surprise when it arrived back in 2017, featuring a tuned balance of horror and comedy, and becoming a box office hit. The film now has a big following as a result, but it's noteworthy looking back that it really only got a lukewarm response from critics. Now it looks like the new sequel, Happy Death Day 2U is getting a similar reaction.

The review embargo for Happy Death Day 2U has lifted, and both positive and negative takes seem to be coming in at equal rates. I personally had a blast watching the movie, and CinemaBlend's Mike Reyes shared similar sentiments in his review. Highlighting the fact that the sequel switches things up genre-wise and keeps audiences on their toes, he thinks that the new release is actually even more fun than the original, writing:

While Happy Death Day operated more as a slasher horror film with a comedic bent, Happy Death Day 2U crosses over into the realm of sci-fi, with some of that horror still mixed in. Much like Alien led to Aliens, writer/director Christopher Landon takes that original concept and turns it into a supercharged thrill ride that plays with the familiar.

Over at The Hollywood Reporter, John DeFore also shared mostly positive thoughts on the film, but also balanced that side of his opinion with acknowledgement that Happy Death Day 2 doesn't quite stick the landing when it comes to the more emotional sides of its story. Still, he did note a belief that audiences will connect to the point where the story will play out as a full trilogy:

It does eventually suck some of the fun out of a tale that gets off to a rollickingly promising start, but that doesn't mean 2U won't fare well enough at the box office to deliver the further adventures promised in a post-credits gag.

Sadly, Chris Nashawaty didn't have as many positive things to say in his review for Entertainment Weekly. Delivering the movie a "C" grade, the critic wasn't overly in love with the fact that Happy Death Day 2U goes back to the looping narrative that created the structure for the first one. Rather than being able to enjoy the new elements being included, he felt that the follow-up simply feels repetitive, and clearly wasn't on-board for the genre switch-up:

Happy Death Day 2U does hint for a while that there could be some geeky, hi-IQ Real Genius laughs. But those hopes are quickly squashed by the premises baked-in repetitiveness. Worse, the movie seems more interested in laughably sketchy exposition about physics and low-hanging-fruit humor than actual jumps and scares.

Writing for Variety, Owen Gleiberman docked the feature for being "more of the same," while adding that just because things get more complex doesn't necessarily mean that the story is getting better. Likewise, he also didn't love that the horror elements were made secondary in the sequel, arguing,

Its all trying, in its way, to be quite clever and all very knowing/videogame/meta. But if you go back to the first two Scream films, which hovered over Happy Death Day as much as Groundhog Day did, they managed to bracket their own reality without sacrificing that essential slasher impulse. They were nerve-jangling thrillers that goosed you, even as they kept pulling the rug out from under your propensity to get goosed.

In her piece for The Los Angeles Times, Kimber Myers is much more forgiving of the change-up, and, like many other reviews, makes the direct comparison between Happy Death Day 2U and Back To The Future (a reference that the film itself makes). She doesn't believe that the new film is as good as the first, but still could appreciate it breaking into new territory:

Like most sequels, Happy Death Day 2U cant quite replicate the feelings of joy and discovery of the original, but Landon deserves credit for varying the tune, while still playing the hits that will please the fans of its predecessor.

Fans of Happy Death Day looking forward to Happy Death Day 2U will get their chance to see the film for themselves incredibly soon, as the film will be arriving in theaters tomorrow, February 13th. If that includes you, dear reader, then you should also stay tuned here on CinemaBlend, as we have some great stuff coming your way from my interviews with stars Jessica Rothe and Israel Broussard, writer/director Christopher Landon, and producer Jason Blum.
