10 Great Movies Coming To Netflix In August 2018

Is it just us or has it been pretty hot outside this summer? August certainly isn't going to let up any time soon, so naturally we're going to need some breaks sitting inside, watching quality streaming content. If you're a Netflix subscriber, and why wouldn't you be, this is just another justification to take a time out on the couch and watch a movie or six. Considering what's coming online in the next month, we can't help but get excited about the options that are heading our way, especially the 10 films we're about to feature below. If you want to see July's honored additions, head over to last month's listing, as we're leaping into the future, starting now!

Batman BeginsAs a Netflix subscriber, it's not how you watch, but what you watch, that defines you. So if you're a fan of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, then we have a good idea where you'll be heading next month, as Batman Begins makes its return to the ranks of the streaming. Some say this is the best of the Nolan Batman films, and quite possibly the best in his catalogue yet. While we won't weigh in on that matter here, we ask that you revisit the film for yourself and judge accordingly.

ClerksHow the hell is Clerks 24 years old? It seems like only yesterday Kevin Smith's vision of indie comedy was a fresh new child, making its way through video stores and cinephiles all over. Whether this is your first or fiftieth viewing*, you'll have the chance to brave the wilds of suburban New Jersey in black and white yet again. With the impending reboot of the Jay and Silent Bob series, it seems like a good idea to revisit the old Quik Stop before it gets potentially re-written with a newer, quicker stop.*in a row?

Million Dollar BabyThis month marks a renewed showdown of two Best Picture contenders, as two of 2005's heavy hitters are both coming to Netflix's streaming library. The first is director / star Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby, the winner and champion of the top honor in its year. A story of an underdog boxer, played by Hillary Swank, and her trainer, played by Eastwood, the film is a bittersweet drama about having what it takes to win, even if the entire world seems like it's out to stop you. Gorgeously understated, make sure you have tissues for this one.

Steel MagnoliasIf you're already crying because of Million Dollar Baby, why not make it a double Kleenex feature? Steel Magnolias is a legendary weeper, with a cast that includes Julia Roberts, Sally Field, and Dolly Parton. That's just scratching the surface of this dramedy, as the cast is as big as the story involving the personal lives of the women working at Louisiana hair salon. If you're not cried out by time this movie's through, then you're either made of the strongest stuff, or you're a glutton for punishment. Either way, we salute you.

StripesIt's not all serious on Netflix in August, as the Bill Murray comedy classic Stripes is also heading to your streaming library in the next month. If you're looking for a nice 80's throwback, Murray's smart-assed antics in the Army are just about as good as you're going to get next month. Joined by John Candy, Harold Ramis, and a slew of other notable actors of the time, you're bound to be laughing as frequently as you are picking out yet another cast member you recognize.

The AviatorOur other contender in the rematch of 2005's Best Picture contenders, The Aviator comes from the immaculate pairing of Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese. Their second pairing takes on the life and times of aerospace tycoon Howard Hughes during the middle portion of his life's work, seeing him go from film director to military contractor to eccentric genius. Along the way, he'll fall in love, rub elbows with Hollywood elites, and butt heads with titans of industry and government -- all the while keeping his vision firmly in sight. If you've got an afternoon free, this one's worth the trip.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the RingIf you're looking for an epic, but your tastes run more towards that of the fantastic, then let The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring take you away from this mortal realm. You've more than likely seen Peter Jackson's first of many installments in the Middle-Earth saga, but ask yourself, when's the last time you've really sat down to watch it? If it's been too long, now's as good a time as any to reacquaint yourself with that world from long ago, when darkness seemed poised to swallow the world in such beautifully crafted detail.

The Informant!Some stories are so absurd, yet so true, that they need an exclamation point added to the end of their titles. The Informant! is a prime example of a tale that really could use that extra flourish, as Steven Soderbergh and Matt Damon teamed up to tell the story of a man who goes through a long, strange journey to the truth, thanks to the FBI and his own mouth. You might need to watch this one twice, as it does get a bit weird, but trust us -- it's a movie worth the while, if only for Damon's equally outrageous performance.

No Country for Old MenWith The Coen Brothers turning their Netflix series, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, into a Netflix movie, the world should adjust themselves to receive a film from the more Western flavored portion of their unique canon. As that's the expectation, we can't think of a finer film to relive through the magic of Netflix than their Best Picture winning opus, No Country For Old Men. With Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin playing an elongated game of cat and mouse, focused on some cartel money that belongs somewhere other than where it lies, it's equal parts dark comedy and pitch black morality in this gem.

HostilesWe close this month's new favorites as we opened it: with Christian Bale in uniform. Only this time, his role in Scott Cooper's Hostiles is a bit more primative, and definitely more ambiguously heroic. Playing a Captain with a brutal history involving Native American combat, Bale is assigned an escort mission to bring an ailing chief and his family back to their homeland. What follows is a film so severely underrated, it deserves a second life in the streaming realm.

Deadpool 2 Has An A-List Cameo That You Definitely Missed

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for Deadpool 2. If you have not yet seen the film, please bookmark this page, and save the read until after your screening!There are many wonderful and hilarious cameos in Deadpool 2, from the X-Men to Brad Pitt, but there is one A-lister so incredibly well hidden that you probably didn't even notice him. He appears in the scene where Cable first travels back in time, and encounters two farmers discussing the best way to clean yourself after using the toilet. One of these men is very clearly Firefly/Rogue One: A Star Wars Story actor Alan Tudyk, but you will probably be shocked to learn that his co-star in the scene is none other than Matt Damon -- as I learned from my recent interview with Deadpool 2 co-writers/producers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese:

Paul Wernick: We were like Ocean's 11. We had Brad Pitt, and we had Matt Damon!Wait, Matt Damon is in this? Where?Rhett Reese: We sneaked him past you!I didn't see that.Paul Wernick: He was one of the rednecks... He's credited as Dickie Greenleaf, who was a character in The Talented Mr. Ripley.

In case you couldn't tell, I was surprised to learn about this special cameo as well, as I had no idea that Matt Damon was in Deadpool 2. I sat down with Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese earlier this week during the New York press day for the blockbuster, and it was while discussing the amazing Brad Pitt cameo that we stumbled into the Damon discussion. They told me that nobody had figured it out before our conversation -- though one person on the internet apparently did begin to decode the "Dickie Greenleaf" hint (it's the identity that Damon's character assumes in The Talented Mr. Ripley, though Jude Law plays the real Dickie Greenleaf in the thriller, and there was apparently some debate about who the trick credit was really masking).

You might be kicking yourself for not figuring out this cameo while actually watching Deadpool 2, but you really shouldn't be too hard on yourself. Not only is the lighting in the scene not exactly optimal, but Matt Damon is both using a fake accent and is under extremely heavy makeup. According to the writers, he was so unrecognizable that you might not have even known it was him if you were standing by his side on the day of production. Said Rhett Reese,

Our makeup artist Bill Corso is the best in the business, literally. And he put Matt in this prosthetic, this chubby suit, and this facial kind of puffiness. And you just would have never known it was Matt Damon. And he came out, and when he came out, he said he did it all in this accent, that sounds a little Matthew McConaughey-esque. So if you had to guess, you'd almost say it was Matthew McConaughey because that's who he sounds like the most. But if you hadn't known, you wouldn't have known. Of course, words flew around the set, people did know, but it was only because rumors traveled. If he walked out of that makeup trailer and no one had said a word, no one would have ever known.

Part of what makes Matt Damon's cameo so humorous is the fact that this is actually his second Marvel cameo in about six months: he also memorably plays an Asgardian actor in Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok. That being said, the funny still goes one step further than that. It turns out that Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese had no idea that MCU appearance had been filmed, and they were as surprised as anyone to see him playing Fake Loki in the third Thor feature. Wernick commented,

We shot that cameo before Thor: Ragnarok had come out. We didn't know he had a cameo in Thor: Ragnarok. And we're like, 'Fucking Matt Damon is cameoing in every Marvel movie? What is happening?'

See How Unbelievable Gal Gadot Would Look Like As Kitana In Mortal Kombat

Fantasy casting is a fun exercise that often results actors being chosen for a role for only the most superficial aesthetic reasons. But sometimes fan casting hits upon such a perfect and obvious pairing of actor and part that anything less will seem like a disappointment (e.g. Nathan Fillion in Uncharted). That's definitely the case for Mortal Kombat now that we've seen how unbelievable Gal Gadot would look as Kitana. Check it out:

Well, I'm sold. As always, BossLogic delivers a flawless victory, taking fantasy casting from our imaginations and realizing it in spectacular fashion, showing how perfect Gal Gadot would be as Princess Kitana in a Mortal Kombat movie. In addition to Gal Gadot looking like the traditional depiction of Kitana in the Mortal Kombat video games, BossLogic also notes how the actress looks similar to original Kitana actress Talisa Soto from the 1995 movie.

Kitana is one of the staples of the Mortal Kombat franchise and has been around since 1993's Mortal Kombat II. She is the princess of the realm Edenia and the adopted daughter of franchise villain, Emperor Shao Kahn. Originally a villain and assassin for her stepfather, Kitana eventually turned on Shao Kahn to side with the Earthrealmers like Liu Kang to fight against him.

BossLogic's image shows Kitana as beautiful and mysterious and everything we've seen from Gal Gadot indicates that she could nail such a role. In both the Fast and Furious franchise as Gisele and when we first meet her Diana Prince in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, she has an air of mystery about her, with her beauty concealing the danger just beneath the surface. That sounds a lot like Kitana.

Gal Gadot obviously has the looks to play the gorgeous and deadly Kitana, but she has also proven to have the action chops as well. Some doubted her as Wonder Woman when she was cast, but she has since completely silenced those notions, proving to be a believable physical presence onscreen. So she could definitely pick up a pair of Japanese war fans and get her ninja on as Kitana in a Mortal Kombat movie.

First things first though, there needs to be a Mortal Kombat movie for her to be in, and the reboot seems to be stuck on the loading screen at the moment. When last we heard, commercial director Simon McQuoid was attached to helm the film with Aquaman director James Wan on board to produce the reboot through his Atomic Monster production company. Back in July, James Wan said that the film was still in early development so we may be waiting on casting for a while.

Yet, if this reboot gets off the Outworld ground, and if Kitana is a character in the movie, it doesn't seem impossible this fantasy casting could become reality. After all, the Mortal Kombat reboot is happening at Warner Bros. and Gal Gadot is already part of the Warner Bros. family thanks to her role as Wonder Woman.
