Why Captain Marvel Fans Shouldn't Be Worried About Carol Danvers' Movie Costume

It's an exciting time for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The studio is currently riding the wave of Black Panther's massive box office and critical success, and the future looks especially bright as well. The next installment in the MCU will be the highly anticipated Avengers: Infinity War, which will unite almost all of the main characters from the past 10 years of movies. Afterward, female heroes will finally get their day with Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel. The latter stars Brie Larson, and fans recently freaked out when set photos revealed the hero in a green suit. But it turns out they shouldn't worry, at least according to Visual Development Supervisor Andy Park. He recently said:

I think it's always funny seeing people's reaction... People are so ready to jump on and to react and make decisions so quickly. I would just say I would hope that they would just know from the past that judging too quickly is... How do I word this? They're going to be happy. I think they're going to be happy. I mean, Kevin Feige said it in an interview. We revealed the concept art that I did, myself and other artists did, of Captain Marvel at last year's San Diego Comic-Con, so I mean, I think that alone should hopefully alleviate some of those fears that people have.

Without explicitly confirming it, it seems that Andy Park believes that the diehard comic fans are going to be happy with Captain Marvel's costume when she finally debut in the MCU. Translation: the red and blue suit is coming.

Andy Park's comments are sure to be a relief for the comic book purists out there. While superhero movies always make a ton of money at the box office, there are particular challenges that come with adapting the source material for the silver screen. One of these potential roadblocks is the sky high expectation of comics fans, who often judge how closely the movies adhere to the original pages. So when a photo of Carol Danvers was released with a green suit, the community blew up.

Now appears that the green Captain Marvel suit may only appear for a brief while, before she eventually finds the traditional red and blue. In his conversation with Comic Book, Andy Park cited the Captain Marvel concept art that debuted at San Diego Comic-Con this past year. That suit was the traditional red and blue, which Park specifically points to. The MCU knows the tradition of the character, and we should probably wait until Captain Marvel arrives before we begin ragging on its inaccuracy. If the MCU wasn't going the traditional route with the costume, they wouldn't have revealed the concept art for the look.

Captain Marvel will arrive in theaters March 6, 2019, although fans are hoping the character will debut in Avengers: Infinity War. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Rian Johnson Wrote A Long, Hilarious Review Of Solo: A Star Wars Story

This month is a very exciting one for nerdy cinephiles out there. While Infinity War is in its third weekend at the box office, it'll be followed up by both Deadpool 2 and Solo: A Star Wars Story. The latter is the beloved space opera's second attempt at a standalone film, and will help expand the galaxy far, far away. While there are still a few weeks to wait until Solo arrives in theaters, early screeners have started to air around the country. Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson attended the film's premiere, and took to his Instagram story to share his hilarious thoughts on the new blockbuster. And it looks like there's one character in particular that we should pay attention to: Lando's droid L3-37, played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

The movie was great, that's the important thing. Donald Glover is great in it, but duh. Alden is terrific, he's not doing a Harrison Ford impersonation, but he brings his own charm and swagger to the character. The big surprise for me was Phoebe Waller-Bridge who has a few of the funniest moments I've ever seen in a Star Wars movie. I had never watched Fleabag (I know I need to watch it- I'm loving Killing Eve but she's not in that, she only write it) so it was a pleasant surprise. The action scenes are great, true.

Wow. While completely spoiler free (thanks, buddy) Rian Johnson was able to highlight some of the greatest moments from Ron Howard's Star Wars standalone film. While anticipation for Donald Glover's Lando is already at an all-time high, Johnson also highlighted the film's star, as well as pointing out who the scene stealer of Solo will ultimately be: the new droid.

Rian Johnson's Instagram story is sure to be a relief for some Star Wars fans who were nervous about the contents of Solo. While Donald Glover was expected to be his charming self as Lando Calrissian, there have been some negative rumors around Alden Ehrenreich's performance as the title character. Luckily Johnson seemingly helps to quell those fears.

Of course, Rian Johnson is aware he's not exactly a trustworthy choice. Because even if he hated Solo, he wouldn't be able to be honest about it. The Last Jedi director has a trilogy of new movies coming down the line, and he's not going to want to piss off his employer. As he posted later on Instagram,

But who's going to read this and take me seriously? I'd like to think I'll still be honest, but it's not like you're coming to my Instagram story for hard edged film criticism on a Star Wars.

Say what you want about Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but Rian Johnson really does seem like a cool guy. He's self-aware enough to get in front of backlash on his review, and is aware that he can't exactly be 100 percent honest.

The Surprising Reason Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Was Concerned About Playing Black Manta In Aquaman

Role selection can be a tough thing for a young, up-and-coming actor. The twin elements of potential quality and exposure must always be considered, and they aren't always things that specifically come hand-in-hand. Take, for example, the case of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and the part of Black Manta in Aquaman. Sure, it's a huge blockbuster with great people involved, but when he was first signing up, the actor was legitimately concerned about spending the entire movie wearing a face-concealing helmet. He recently told me,

My very first impression, I looked him up, I Googled it, and I said. 'This guy, he looks kind of silly.' And then my second thing was there, 'Well, I don't want to do this. If I do this nobody is going to see my face!'

With Aquaman preparing to arrive in theaters everywhere this Friday, I recently had the opportunity to hop on the phone with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II to talk about his experience making the movie. During our chat a big part of the discussion was about his preparation process. I asked about his initial impressions of Black Manta, and what it was that allowed him to get into the part, and he started his answer by being very open about what were some legitimate concerns.

While having your name in the credits of a massive superhero blockbuster is a pretty big deal, it's not going to mean much for your future acting career if audiences can't pick you out of a lineup immediately after a screening. And while Black Manta may look epically cool in his big, round helmet, it's not exactly a look designed to highlight the looks of the person wearing it. Fortunately, continuing to work on the movie and understand the character allowed Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's concerns to be alleviated.

Part of what allowed the actor to get into the gig was seeing that Black Manta did indeed take his helmet off from time to time in the comics, but that wound up only being a part of what convinced him to fully dedicate himself to Aquaman. The much bigger factor was reading opinions from fans and understanding how much the character really means to them. He began to understand where their passion for Arthur Curry's arch-nemesis was coming from, and it ultimately allowed him to whole-heartedly embrace the role. Said Abdul-Mateen,

Then I started to read a little bit more about the character, and then I saw that in the comic books sometimes he did spend a lot of time with the helmet off. But the thing that really sold me was more was my interaction with the fans, and looking at how much the fans love this character, and they really, really gravitated towards him. For someone to be a villain and to have so much love from the fans of Aquaman, I knew that this was something that could potentially be really special.

With the Aquaman fans supporting him, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II fully embraced the part, and the best news of all is that it all worked out superbly. Not only is the latest DC Extended Universe feature a legitimate blast and fun superhero flick, but Black Manta is definitely one of the best parts of the movie - and does spend a fair amount of time both in and out of the helmet. Fans are going to love the treatment of the character, and presumably that's only going to cause the actor's fondness for him to get all the more powerful.

Directed by James Wan, Aquaman is the sixth film from the DC Extended Universe and features an ensemble cast that includes Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Willem Dafoe, Dolph Lundgren, Temura Morrison, Nicole Kidman, and more.
