The Russo Brothers Address Hawkeye's Absence From Infinity War Trailers And Posters

One of the most interesting mysteries leading into Avengers: Infinity War has been the question of why Hawkeye has been almost completely missing. The Russo Brothers have now spoken out on this ongoing question. As it turns out, Hawkeye isn't simply being ignored because he's not as cool as the other Avengers. The truth is that there's a reason that we're not seeing Hawkeye in the trailers, it's just that we won't know what that reason is until we see the movie. According to Infinity War co-director Anthony Russo...

All will be explained when people see the movie. It's all tied into the story.

So it seems the reason that we haven't seen much of Hawkeye in trailers may be that even seeing him would be something of a spoiler. Previously the Russo's told us that Hawkeye's reaction to the events of Captain America: Civil War has sent him on his own path, separate from the rest of the characters that we know. How that will impact the overall story is far from clear at this point, though, if Hawkeye is off on his own, then any shots of him in the trailers likely wouldn't include any other heroes, and Avengers: Infinity War is really selling itself on the massive team-up aspect of the plot.

Of course, this doesn't explain why Hawkeye is left off of everything promoting the new movie. He's not on the poster and we didn't even see his emoji during the Super Bowl trailer lead up. Indications have been that Clint Barton may have an entirely new look in the film and it may just that Infinity War wants to leave that reveal until it actually happens on the screen.

One has to instantly think about the promotional lead up to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Throughout that entire build, for the first Star Wars movie in years, Luke Skywalker was nowhere to be found. As it turned out, that's because the entire movie was actually about trying to find him. Based on what the Russos tell Total Film (via GamesRadar), it seems something similar is happening here. We're fairly certain with a Mad Titan on the loose looking for Infinity Stones, nobody is going to be worrying too much about where Hawkeye is, but wherever Hawkeye is hanging out could turn out to be important to the overall story. Maybe he has found the Soul Stone and he's guarding it Last Crusade style.

Whatever the reason for Hawkeye being MIA, it's nice that there is a reason, and this isn't just our favorite archer being ignored because they couldn't find space for him among all the other heroes. Hawkeye may not have superpowers, but he's still pretty super and he has fans who will want to see him. We'll finally get to see what Hawkeye has been doing when Avengers: Infinity War debuts April 27.

New Bumblebee Video Reveals First Look At Cliffjumper And Possibly More

When Bumblebee opens next month, we'll see the Transformers like we've never seen them before, at least on the big screen anyways. The franchise is heading back to the 1980s with classic designs and some Transformers that haven't had the chance to shine yet in live-action. A new video for Bumblebee gives us our first look at one of those characters, Cliffjumper, and possibly Arcee as well. Check it out:

At one point in the video, you'll see Optimus Prime, gun in hand, running through a firefight, and if you pause the video or go frame by frame, you can see a bright red Autobot running beside him. That looks to be Cliffjumper, the paranoid hothead who absolutely hates Decepticons and transforms into a Porsche 924 Turbo.

We know that Andrew Morgado will voice Cliffjumper in Bumblebee so he's definitely in the movie and it looks like he is fighting alongside Optimus just like in the original Transformers cartoon. And although you don't get a great look at him here, it's cool to see that this original hero is back.

A split second later in the video posted to the Transformers Twitter account, as Optimus Prime jumps from an explosion, you see a Transformer or Tranformers on the right side of the frame. Some fans think that they see Arcee in the mix there.

Arcee is a female Autobot who is traditionally pink and white was introduced in 1986's The Transformers: The Movie. This character did sort of already appear in the Michael Bay-Verse in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen as a motorcycle, but maybe she'll get a bit more to do here.

In addition to the brief glimpses at OG Transformers characters, what this video really seems to be stressing is that Bumblebee is taking the franchise back to its roots. The film is set in the '80s, the time when Transformers became part of pop culture. As a result, the aesthetics for the Transformers in Bumblebee are directly drawing from the Generation 1 designs that fans fell in love with in the cartoons.

This has come through in the trailers, as just seeing Optimus Prime in his original more simplistic, toy-like design has a potent nostalgic effect. With potentially more Transformers of the likes of Arcee and Cliffjumper from the decade the cartoon was at its height of popularity only makes Bumblebee all the more exciting. It feels like Bumblebee has the potential to be the Transformers film fans of the cartoons and toys have wanted all along.

Bumblebee is directed by Kubo and the Two Strings' Travis Knight and stars Hailee Steinfeld and John Cena. Bumblebee rolls into a positively jam-packed weekend when it opens on December 21. For all of the biggest movies hitting theaters next year, head on over to our 2019 release schedule.

The Blockers Scene That Was Too Gross For Audiences

There are a few scenes in Blockers that peak rather high on the gross scale -- such as John Cena chugging a beer with his butt -- but most would agree that the vomit-covered limo ride is the movie at its most disgusting. It's certainly funny, but it is also especially off-putting, as you can practically smell it off the screen. Knowing how it ended up, however, it may surprise you to learn that the original version was far, far more off-putting. Director Kay Cannon recently told me,

The biggest change that was the most helpful with testing was I had this big car chase sequence where the kids are all puking, and the kids puking was a lot longer. There was a lot more puke, and there was a lot more going on. Like Kayla was having this whole drug thing where she thought the puke was confetti, and there was just a lot happening. And it wasn't working. People just thought, as you can expect, thought that the puke was just too gross.

Reading this description, it's not hard to see why audiences were put off. Puke is pretty gross all by itself, but it's far, far worse when characters are reveling in playing around in it.

With Blockers arriving on home video, I recently had the pleasure of hopping on the phone with Kay Cannon to talk about her work on the movie, and one of the first things that came up in conversation was the film's evolution. Comedies can change a lot in the testing process because of the number of alts shot during production, and I asked how early audience reaction altered the theatrical cut. It turns out the most significant modification involved the puking in the limo scene, which wound up changing quite a lot.

So how did Kay Cannon wind up fixing it? As much as she and her team tried to trim and cut the sequence, nothing was working, as audiences kept rejecting it. It certainly must have been frustrating, but the filmmaker wound up finding inspiration from one of 2017's best films: Edgar Wright's Baby Driver. Acknowledging the tremendous impact of the soundtrack on the action, Cannon recognized that music was the answer, and it wound up being perfect:

I kept cutting it down, cutting it down, cutting it down, and still the testing, the people on the cards, were like, 'Oh, the puke is gross, the puke is gross.' I really needed to keep the scene because it got us from Point A to Point B in the story. Luck would have it, I watched Baby Driver, and got totally inspired by Baby Driver. I was like, 'I'm going to put this puke to music.' We trimmed it down, and put it to music, and I tested it in front of an audience with the music, and they loved it. And so that was really helpful.

It's just a little bit of classical music, but it makes all the difference in the world.

If you're really desperate to see more from the puke scene in Blockers (if so... really?), you're in luck. The new Blu-ray has an entire featurette titled "Puke-a-Palooza" that dives into the making of the scene and how they created the truly disgusting effect. It's kind of strange to say, but this is a case where knowing how the sausage is made weirdly makes the whole thing less gross. You can watch a clip of it below:
