Pirates Of The Caribbean Fans Petition For Johnny Depp's Return

The world has gone petition mad lately, but the point just seems to be like-minded people gathering to join their voices in one loud chorus: We want THIS. Now thousands of Pirates of the Caribbean fans have joined their voices for the reinstatement of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Game of Thrones fans shook the ground with their viral petition, saying they want (but won't get) a new final Season 8. Robert Pattinson critics want (but won't get) a different Batman. Star Wars fans want (but won't get) new filmmakers, but they can't agree on which filmmakers because that fandom is a whole other galaxy of mess.

Will these petitions go anywhere? Probably not. Or if they are successful -- like the one for James Gunn -- it probably wouldn't be due to a Change.org petition. For every petitioner, there's probably someone who disagrees, they just don't need a petition to make the point because they are likely already getting their way.

There are petitions out there for almost anything, and more than one for Johnny Depp to return to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise -- which has stalled out after the fifth movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and whatever is or is not now happening with the reboot.

Bounding Into Comics recently found a couple of Change.org petitions in Johnny Depp's favor, including one that kept things simple with "KEEP JOHNNY DEPP AS JACK SPARROW!!!!" That one has more than 13,400 signatures as of June 1. There's also another petition with a longer message on why Depp should return; that one has under 5,000 signatures at this point.

In terms of the Johnny Depp petitions, there are conflicting reports about what happened in Depp's marriage to Amber Heard. That may not sound like it should be relevant, but it might be. His legal team claims Heard's op-ed piece alleging abuse cost Depp his job as Captain Jack Sparrow. Disney hasn't officially said anything about Pirates of the Caribbean 6, with or without Depp, the whole franchise just seems to be in limbo after the relative disappointment of Dead Men Tell No Tales.

The petitions don't openly take sides in the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard battle that is still playing out through multiple lawsuits, although one of the petitions does note "personal issues" as a reason for Depp appearing to be out as Jack Sparrow. The petitions just note that they can't imagine anyone else leading the franchise, threatening "They have to bring him back to rule the seas again or we will never watch any Pirates of the Caribbean movie without our Captain."

Pirates of the Caribbean is a hugely lucrative franchise for Disney, and it's amazing to think this all started with the theme park ride. (Speaking of theme parks, apparently Jack Sparrow was key to building Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge too.) Johnny Depp was quite rightly given a lot of credit for the franchise's success, but it's very expensive to make the movies and the last one didn't seem to please too many people. It only came out two years ago in 2017, so it's understandable if everyone just wants a break. Besides, Johnny Depp still has the Fantastic Beasts franchise (as far as we know) and smaller films like Minamata.

Where would you like to see the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise go from here, with or without Johnny Depp? A sixth movie? A reboot? Should it die off? Just take a long break?

The last time Steven Spielberg and Leonardo DiCaprio worked together was on 2002's Catch Me If You Can, where DiCaprio played young conman Frank Abagnale Jr. The movie, which was based on a true story, was met with excellent critical reception and earned two Academy Award nominations, but since then Spielberg and DiCaprio haven't collaborated on anything together. However, that may soon change, as the director and actor are now looking to reunite for a biopic about Civil War general and 18th President of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant.

According to Deadline, Steven Spielberg and Leonardo DiCaprio are in early talks to work together on the Ulysses Grant biopic, which DiCaprio is producing with Appian Way partner Jennifer Davisson, and Spielberg is being eyed to direct. The movie will be based off the Grant biography written by Ron Chernow, and it's being adapted into a screenplay by Robin Hood's David James Kelly. Assuming Spielberg signs a deal to helm the biopic, it will allow him to explore the American Civil War again, which he previously did with 2012's Lincoln. Interestingly enough, Grant isn't the only U.S. president who DiCaprio is on deck to play, as it was reported last year that he play Theodore Roosevelt in a biopic directed by Martin Scorsese.

Born in 1822 and passing away in 1885, Ulysses Grant was one of the most famous figures in American Civil War history, winning the battle of Shiloh and the Vicksburg campaign, among others, for the Union. His presidency lasted from 1869 to 1877, and towards the end of his life, he worked with acclaimed author Mark Twain on his memoirs. He's previously been portrayed on screen by actors like Donald Crisp, Harry Morgan, Kevin Kline, Jared Harris and Victor Slezak.

While this Ulysses Grant movie is reportedly a priority, and it would be great to see Steven Spielberg and Leonardo DiCaprio teaming up again, scheduling will make it difficult for the two of them to work on this project. DiCaprio is currently gearing up to star in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and in addition to the Theodore Roosevelt biopic, he's also set to play Leonardo da Vinci in a movie about the artist/inventor. As for Spielberg, he's working on Indiana Jones 5 next, and once that's done, he intends to direct the West Side Story remake, not to mention he's also been bouncing around helming The Kidnapping of Edgar Mortaro and DC's Blackhawk movie (which he's already set produce). So even if these two talents are able to carve out time for that Grant project, we may have to wait a while before it's fully realized.

Wait, Is Marvel Developing A Dark Avengers Movie?

One of the reasons the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been so successful is the franchise explores so many different corners rather than just rehashes the same kind of material time and time again. Take this year: Black Panther brought us to the wondrous nation of Wakanda, Avengers: Infinity War saw explosive action unfolding on Earth and in other corners of the galaxy, and Ant-Man and the Wasp opted to tell a smaller (figuratively and literally), yet still compelling story. We're still piecing together what will comprise the Phase 4 slate of films, but there's no shortage of content to be adapted, and supposedly Marvel has considered having Dark Avengers be one of these movies.

According to That Hashtag Show, Marvel has developed and competed a script for a Dark Avengers movie, based on the team created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Mike Deodato following the "Secret Invasion" event. Just to be clear, assuming this report is true, this does not necessarily mean that a Dark Avengers movie is now on the way. Marvel commissions a lot of scripts, and there's no way to tell if Dark Avengers is one of the projects being prioritized or if it's lower down in the pile. Still, the fact that Marvel Studios is willing to put a villainous group of characters in the spotlight is fascinating, as until now, we've only been following tried-and-true heroes as the main protagonists (although I suppose an argument could be made for Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War).

In the aftermath of "Secret Invasion," Norman Osborn, who restored goodwill with the public by killing the Skrull queen, became the leader of S.H.I.E.L.D., reformed it into H.A.M.M.E.R. and formed a new Avengers team on behalf of the U.S. government. But as the name implies, there were some bad seeds included in the Dark Avengers. Along with Osborn wearing redesigned Iron Man armor and calling himself Iron Patriot, the team's lineup included Mac Gargan, a.k.a. Scorpion, disguised as Spider-Man and enhanced by the Venom symbiote; Karla Sofen, a.k.a. Moonstone, disguised as Ms. Marvel; Bullseye disguised as Hawkeye; Daken disguised as Wolverine, the Noh-Varr Captain Marvel, Ares (yes, the Greek god of war Ares) and The Sentry. The Dark Avengers went on various missions and, needless to say, were much sketchier than the traditional Avengers teams, but the team eventually collapsed during the "Siege" event, although Osborn later formed a new iteration with all-new recruits.

As we've seen with Suicide Squad at DC and Venom in Sony's Spider-verse, there's room for villain-led movies to leave their unique marks on the superhero movie genre, so Dark Avengers could be a good opportunity for Marvel to delve into darker storytelling while still keeping inside the PG-13 confines. Personally, I go with a movie centered on the Thunderbolts, which typically follows reformed super villains using their talents to keep the world safe for a change. Who knows, maybe Marvel has a Thunderbolts script in its vault as well! Still, Dark Avengers is an intriguing prospect, and since Captain Marvel is introducing the Skrulls to the MCU, if that paves the way for a "Secret Invasion" adaptation, then Dark Avengers could easily follow after.

For right now, Marvel fans can look forward to Captain Marvel coming out on March 8, 2019, followed by Avengers 4 and Spider-Man: Far From Home on May 3 and July 5 of the same year, respectively. As for what else is in development for the MCU, you can find that information in our handy guide.
