Expect Far Fewer Super Bowl Movie Trailers This Year

Amidst the excitement of the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams going head-to-head at Super Bowl LIII this Sunday, movie fans be warned: much fewer movie trailers are expected to debut alongside the other buzzy commercials during the game.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, as few as three to four movie spots may premiere on Super Bowl Sunday, in comparison to the typical eight to ten from the major studios. Splurging on a 30-second game spot is a steep $5 million, a price the major studios seem to be treading lightly on this year.

As Disney approaches a jam-packed year of huge releases, a sneak peek at least one of the studios offerings is sure to make an appearance. But which one? The studio's line-up includes Captain Marvel, Dumbo, Avengers: Endgame, Aladdin, Toy Story 4, Artemis Fowl and Star Wars: Episode IX all coming this year.

Per the report, a Star Wars: Episode IX Super Bowl trailer isnt likely to show since there are six big releases coming before it. However, since every Avengers film has made an appearance at the Super Bowl, bets are in favor of a new Endgame trailer. Of course, the upcoming Marvel film isnt like the other before it: theres a lot of secrecy and anticipation already surrounding it. Will the studio break this tradition?

At last years Super Bowl, a 30-second spot for Avengers: Infinity War premiered during the game and generated the most views and social conversation than any other spot that day. The studio may also use the big television event to raise up their other upcoming releases. In 2018, the studio premiered the trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story ahead of its May release alongside promoting Infinity War.

Universal is expected to release a first look at the Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbs and Shaw coming this August, which will star Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham as the franchises unlikely pair, as they face-off against a villain played by Idris Elba. Similarly to the Avengers films, Fast installments have always had a place at the Super Bowl. In 2018, spots for Universals Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Skyscraper premiered.

Sony and Warner Bros are not investing in Super Bowl airtime for their upcoming releases, and 20th Century Foxs standing at the game are unclear considering its merger with Disney. Fox might choose to promote Dark Phoenix heading to theaters in June. Paramount will be showcasing its March animated release Wonder Park during the pregame show, following the presence of Mission: Impossible Fallout during the Super Bowl last year.

While there is said to be fewer trailer debuts during Super Bowl LIII, there are some exciting possible debuts coming our way this Sunday, February 3 during the 3:30 p.m. PST live broadcast from Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Marvels Kevin Feige Has Revealed What One Of The MCUs Next Cosmic Movies Might Be

Avengers 4 will mark the end of an era for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the franchise isn't hitting the breaks once that spectacle has concluded. Although Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 are the only post-Phase Three movies to be officially announced so far, there are plenty of other movies in development, though until today, a Black Widow standalone movie was the only other project the public had been made aware of from this slate. However, as previously revealed, there will be a bigger cosmic presence in the MCU going forward, and one of the ways that might be accomplished is through an Eternals movie. According to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige:

Eternals is one of many many many things that we are actively beginning to have creative discussions about to see if we believe in them enough to put them on a slate.

As Kevin Feige revealed to The Wrap, although there's still a fair amount of work to be done in the final stretch of Phase Three, which includes Ant-Man and the Wasp, Captain Marvel and Avengers 4, Feige and his fellow MCU bigwigs have already begun planning what others movies will be released afterwards. To be clear, Eternals hasn't officially gotten the green light; in fact, it may be a while until we learn what the next full slate of Marvel movies looks like. However, since we'll likely be diving deeper into the MCU's cosmic realm, Eternals would be a worthy addition to the canon. Screenwriters have also reportedly met with Marvel about drafting an Eternals story that revolves around Sersi, one of the main characters from this corner of the Marvel universe.

Created by Jack Kirby in 1976, The Eternals are a long-lived race of beings that were created by the powerful Celestials millions of years ago. The Eternals were the result of a genetic experiment that also saw the creation of the destructive Deviants. Thanks to their accelerated evolution, the Eternals are long-lived, can't be hurt by extreme temperatures, are immune to disease and poison and are imbued with cosmic energy that can be channeled into a number of special abilities. The Eternals haven't been directly addressed in the MCU yet, but Thanos is an Eternal-Deviant hybrid, hence why in the comics he doesn't look human like most of the other Eternals. Considering that by the time Avengers: Infinity War begins, Thanos' homeworld, Titan, has long been devoid of life, one would imagine this means that an Eternals movie would be a prequel, taking place long before the events of the modern MCU began.

The world has gone petition mad lately, but the point just seems to be like-minded people gathering to join their voices in one loud chorus: We want THIS. Now thousands of Pirates of the Caribbean fans have joined their voices for the reinstatement of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Game of Thrones fans shook the ground with their viral petition, saying they want (but won't get) a new final Season 8. Robert Pattinson critics want (but won't get) a different Batman. Star Wars fans want (but won't get) new filmmakers, but they can't agree on which filmmakers because that fandom is a whole other galaxy of mess.

Will these petitions go anywhere? Probably not. Or if they are successful -- like the one for James Gunn -- it probably wouldn't be due to a Change.org petition. For every petitioner, there's probably someone who disagrees, they just don't need a petition to make the point because they are likely already getting their way.

There are petitions out there for almost anything, and more than one for Johnny Depp to return to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise -- which has stalled out after the fifth movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and whatever is or is not now happening with the reboot.

Bounding Into Comics recently found a couple of Change.org petitions in Johnny Depp's favor, including one that kept things simple with "KEEP JOHNNY DEPP AS JACK SPARROW!!!!" That one has more than 13,400 signatures as of June 1. There's also another petition with a longer message on why Depp should return; that one has under 5,000 signatures at this point.

In terms of the Johnny Depp petitions, there are conflicting reports about what happened in Depp's marriage to Amber Heard. That may not sound like it should be relevant, but it might be. His legal team claims Heard's op-ed piece alleging abuse cost Depp his job as Captain Jack Sparrow. Disney hasn't officially said anything about Pirates of the Caribbean 6, with or without Depp, the whole franchise just seems to be in limbo after the relative disappointment of Dead Men Tell No Tales.

The petitions don't openly take sides in the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard battle that is still playing out through multiple lawsuits, although one of the petitions does note "personal issues" as a reason for Depp appearing to be out as Jack Sparrow. The petitions just note that they can't imagine anyone else leading the franchise, threatening "They have to bring him back to rule the seas again or we will never watch any Pirates of the Caribbean movie without our Captain."

Pirates of the Caribbean is a hugely lucrative franchise for Disney, and it's amazing to think this all started with the theme park ride. (Speaking of theme parks, apparently Jack Sparrow was key to building Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge too.) Johnny Depp was quite rightly given a lot of credit for the franchise's success, but it's very expensive to make the movies and the last one didn't seem to please too many people. It only came out two years ago in 2017, so it's understandable if everyone just wants a break. Besides, Johnny Depp still has the Fantastic Beasts franchise (as far as we know) and smaller films like Minamata.

Where would you like to see the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise go from here, with or without Johnny Depp? A sixth movie? A reboot? Should it die off? Just take a long break?

The last time Steven Spielberg and Leonardo DiCaprio worked together was on 2002's Catch Me If You Can, where DiCaprio played young conman Frank Abagnale Jr. The movie, which was based on a true story, was met with excellent critical reception and earned two Academy Award nominations, but since then Spielberg and DiCaprio haven't collaborated on anything together. However, that may soon change, as the director and actor are now looking to reunite for a biopic about Civil War general and 18th President of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant.

According to Deadline, Steven Spielberg and Leonardo DiCaprio are in early talks to work together on the Ulysses Grant biopic, which DiCaprio is producing with Appian Way partner Jennifer Davisson, and Spielberg is being eyed to direct. The movie will be based off the Grant biography written by Ron Chernow, and it's being adapted into a screenplay by Robin Hood's David James Kelly. Assuming Spielberg signs a deal to helm the biopic, it will allow him to explore the American Civil War again, which he previously did with 2012's Lincoln. Interestingly enough, Grant isn't the only U.S. president who DiCaprio is on deck to play, as it was reported last year that he play Theodore Roosevelt in a biopic directed by Martin Scorsese.

Born in 1822 and passing away in 1885, Ulysses Grant was one of the most famous figures in American Civil War history, winning the battle of Shiloh and the Vicksburg campaign, among others, for the Union. His presidency lasted from 1869 to 1877, and towards the end of his life, he worked with acclaimed author Mark Twain on his memoirs. He's previously been portrayed on screen by actors like Donald Crisp, Harry Morgan, Kevin Kline, Jared Harris and Victor Slezak.

While this Ulysses Grant movie is reportedly a priority, and it would be great to see Steven Spielberg and Leonardo DiCaprio teaming up again, scheduling will make it difficult for the two of them to work on this project. DiCaprio is currently gearing up to star in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and in addition to the Theodore Roosevelt biopic, he's also set to play Leonardo da Vinci in a movie about the artist/inventor. As for Spielberg, he's working on Indiana Jones 5 next, and once that's done, he intends to direct the West Side Story remake, not to mention he's also been bouncing around helming The Kidnapping of Edgar Mortaro and DC's Blackhawk movie (which he's already set produce). So even if these two talents are able to carve out time for that Grant project, we may have to wait a while before it's fully realized.
