Aquaman May Make Even More Money For DC Than We Thought

Back in October, we got our first predictions of what Warner Bros.' Aquaman could make in its opening weekend. The long-range tracking on the DCEU film had it pegged somewhere in the $40 million to $60 million range. Now it's looking like those super early projections may have been a bit low and Aquaman may actually cross $100 million.

Box office analysts who spoke with The Wrap indicated that Aquaman could be the first film to enjoy a $100+ million opening weekend domestically since all the way back in June, when Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom debuted to $148 million. The official tracking doesn't come out until Thursday, so that should give us an even clearer picture at exactly where Aquaman might land.

As we've often seen, tracking isn't an exact science, and there are still a few weeks where things can change for the DCEU film in either direction. But whether Aquaman opens domestically above or below $100 million, the point is that the outlook on the film is rosier than it was just a month ago when it was tracking at $40 million to $60 million.

An opening in the $40 million to $60 million range would be in line with the Phase 1 Marvel movies, but it is certainly not a number that is going to blow people out of the water, especially for a film this big and this important.

This is the first DCEU film since the financially and critically disappointing Justice League, and you have to think that Warner Bros. is hoping Arthur Curry can help begin to turn the ship around for the beleaguered DCEU. Plus, have you seen the latest trailer? This thing looks expensive.

If Aquaman does cross $100 million, it will be a stupendous achievement, not just in its own right, but in light of the positively absurd amount of competition it will face in what may be the most stacked weekend of the year.

Disney's family-friendly sequel Mary Poppins Returns arrives in theaters on the Wednesday before Aquaman opens, and it is sure to provide stiff competition. Opening opposite Aquaman is also the Transformers spinoff film Bumblebee and that's not to mention the previous week's releases like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse that should still be drawing in audiences.

There are plenty of reasons though to be bull(shark)ish on Aquaman's prospects. Polling indicates that women are especially interested in the film and the final trailer is the best sales pitch yet for the underwater adventure. And what's even more encouraging is that unlike Justice League, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, word of mouth on Aquman should be good.

The early reactions are in for the film and it sounds like it is far better than 'just okay,' thus standing as an unequivocal win for Warner Bros. and the best DC film since Wonder Woman or maybe even The Dark Knight.

Crazy Rich Asians May Have Won The Box Office, But The Meg Still Dominated Worldwide

This weekend's domestic box office saw Crazy Rich Asians take the top spot in a big win for film diversity, however, it wasn't enough to take down a massive shark on a global scale. The Meg, in addition to putting in a strong second place in North America with $21 million, brought in an impressive $67 million in 55 overseas markets, making it the top box office hit around the world.

To be fair, Crazy Rich Asians never really had a chance at being a global superstar, as the film is seeing a staggered release over the next several weeks in several international territories. According to Deadline, it only opened in six overseas markets this weekend, and won't be hitting South East Asia, where it will likely do well compared to the rest of the world, until next weekend. Of course, it should also be pointed out that The Meg cost a hell of a lot more to make than Crazy Rich Asians did. The latter film has already made back it's production budget in less than a week of release.

While there really wasn't any other major blockbuster that was poised to take the international box office crown from The Meg, the fact that the film has already crossed the $300 million mark is impressive nonetheless. The film was expected to do well last weekend, but it actually performed well above expectations. It also came close to taking the domestic crown this weekend as well, but the groundswell of support, not to mention solid reviews, behind Crazy Rich Asians, was enough to take down the giant shark.

Other films continued to do well overseas as well. Mission: Impossible - Fallout, broke the $500 million mark globally and Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation crossed the $400 million mark, thanks mostly to a huge opening in China. While numbers like that would be records in a lot of franchises, both of these series have done so well at the box office that they both still have a long way to go if they want to become the highest grossing entry in their respective series.

We're getting into a period of the late summer when the box office tends to slow down a bit, which opens up opportunities for unexpected films to do well. This weekend will only see The Happytime Murders and "boy and his robot dog" film A.X.L. see a release of any significant size. While it's unclear how big either film will actually be, it seems likely both The Meg and Crazy Rich Asians will be able to add to their totals more than they would if they were faced with bigger titles.

An Iconic X-Men Location Has Been Confirmed For Dark Phoenix

While it remains to be seen if Dark Phoenix ends up being the last of the main X-Men movies, it certainly is embracing more of its comic book roots. Dark Phoenix is aiming to be a more faithful adaptation of The Dark Phoenix Saga, the X-Men themselves are wearing costumes similar to the ones from Grant Morrison's run on New X-Men and now it's been confirmed that the movie will feature Genosha, which in the comics has long been a safe haven for mutants. Magneto is leading this commune in Dark Phoenix, and Jean Grey will travel there in search of guidance. Director Simon Kinberg explained:

What you're seeing is the beginnings of Genosha. That's where Erik is when we meet him. It's like Magneto's Israel -- a land built for mutants, a homeland where they can be safe and self-sufficient. Jean finds him there because what's happening to her is making her do destructive things, and she doesn't know why. The only person she's known who has done destructive and lethal things in the past but came back from it is Magneto. She feels he alone can give her answers because he's lived both sides. He's lost control and killed and hurt people, some of whom he even loved, and yet he's also found a measure of peace and that's what she's searching for.

When we last left off with Magneto, a.k.a. Erik Lensherr, at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse, he had turned against Apocalypse and helped the X-Men save the day, but he decided not to stick around the X-Mansion with Professor X, Mystique and Beast to train the new generation of superheroes. Dark Phoenix picks up nine years later, and during that interim period he's formed Genosha as a place where mutants looking to escape persecution from humans can live their lives in peace. It's a far cry from the Magneto who carried out acts of terrorism in his fight for mutant superiority, but then again, Dark Phoenix is set in a new timeline, so Erik's gone down a different life path than the one Ian McKellen's version did.

Like its comic book counterpart, Dark Phoenix's Genosha is an island, but this community is just getting started and is a far cry from the nation depicted on the printed page. If by some chance the main X-Men series continues, it would be interesting to see Genosha grow and become more self-sustainable, but then again, who knows how long we'll spend there in Dark Phoenix. As Simon Kinberg noted when speaking with Empire about the Dark Phoenix trailer, Jean Grey goes there to seek Magneto's help since he's had quite the violent past. But once Jean loses control and becomes the Phoenix, it looks like Magneto will leave Genosha and form his own group to stop her using more drastic measures than what Professor X and some of the other X-Men are willing to use.

Earlier this year, audiences gazed intently on A Quiet Place as it explored the terror of silence. Another lost sense is being explored on Netflix's upcoming film Bird Box, starring Sandra Bullock, as an unseen threat has her character wearing a blindfold through desolate forests and raging rivers. Take a look:

Feel those chills coming on? Netflix's trailer for Bird Box offers a lot of intrigue and excitement for the movie coming out this winter. First off, seeing Sandy Bullock back in action in survival mode brings back memories from her incredible performance in 2013's Gravity.

This movie has the actress protecting her children and herself from an entity that takes the form of people's worst fears. Bullock is grounded, daring and understandably frightened in the trailer as she transforms from a short-haired pregnant woman to a badass survivor relentlessly looking out for her children.

Sandra Bullock is joined by a hugely talented cast as well including her recent Ocean's 8 costar Sarah Paulson, Predator's Trevante Rhodes, Get Out's Lil Rel Howery and John Malkovich. In the trailer, Bullock's character Malorie is getting an ultrasound with her sister (Paulson) when a woman is seen persistently banging her bloody head against glass in the hospital. The two drive out to a messy post-apocalyptic scene, with burning cars and mass hysteria. After the dust settles, Bullock finds herself in a house with other survivors hiding from the threat.

The trailer does an incredible job of explaining the stakes of the situation, revealing that people see their worst nightmare when they open their eyes. Eventually the survivors board up cars, cover their eyes, and stay indoors in order to continue to live.

The sequence where the survivors sit in a van with windows blocked out as the car sensors start reacting sets up what kind of thrills Bird Box will have. The most memorable highlight of the trailer is when Malorie is out alone with her kids on a river, as she tells them they cannot take off their blindfolds. It ends with her in the middle of the river on a boat holding out a gun at a indistinct figure in the distance which soon seems to approach her and take her down as the movie's title appears.

Bird Box continues a recent trend of Netflix releasing high-profile original movies to their library, as well as select theaters. The streaming service has a line-up of original movies featuring big names such as Outlaw King starring Chris Pine, a new Coen Brothers film The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and Alfonso Cuarn's Roma. Bird Box is coming to Netflix and select theaters on December 21.
