Deadpool 2s Zazie Beetz Is Seriously Psyched About Working With Joaquin Phoenix On Joker Movie

27-year-old actress Zazie Beetz has had quite the lucky streak recently, and not because it was her Deadpool 2 character Domino's superpower. Apart from gracing the screen opposite Ryan Reynolds in the summer blockbuster, Beetz was nominated for an Emmy for her supporting role as Van on Atlanta, where she got to dish on her upcoming role in Warner Bros' highly-anticipated Joker. She's reasonably starstruck to be working with the transformative dramatic actor leading the film. In her words:

I'm about to work on a movie with Joaquin Phoenix, and I am just such a huge fan. It's just such an honor to work with him. And to follow him and his work, I think, it's like anyone else. I'm human.

Zazie Beetz brought up her exciting role during an E! Interview at the Red Carpet of 2018 Emmys, and the actress explained how insane it was to be among so many incredible talents. As Beetz dabbles in the Marvel and DC universe, mega-stardom is certainly around the corner. Both comic genre films bring a twist to the packed line-up of adaptations. The Deadpool franchise has redefined the mature superhero film and piqued studios' interest to slap on an R-rating on comic book stories. Todd Phillip's Joker will be a dramatic character study of the disturbing Batman villain, giving grounded insight to the character never seen before.

In Joker, Zazie Beetz will be playing a potential love interest to Joaquin Phoenix as single mother Sophie Dumond. Sophie has been described as an unbeautiful, hardened New York woman just trying to make ends meet and catch a break. As the film seems to be going for a more realistic story for the Joker, Beetz will likely don less glamorous and stylish attire that she was last seen wearing as Domino. The film just started its principal photography in New York City this month, with director Todd Phillips sharing Joaquin Phoenix's unique Joker look.

The actress's excitement to work with the Oscar-nominated actor is certainly understandable. Joaquin Phoenix has delivered memorable performance in films such as Walk the Line, Her and The Master. Joker will mark his first take on a comic book character and is certainly the highest-profile role he has portrayed thus far (I mean, besides Jesus). Zazie Beetz will get to be close by as he tackles this exciting role, and in an unprecedented film within Warner Bros. lineup no less.

Joker has an impressive cast put together, as it features Robert DeNiro as a talk show host, Brett Cullen as Thomas Wayne and Frances Conroy as the eponymous character's mother. Considering what we know so far, the film doesn't seem to be carefully following its source material, making for a lot of surprises for fans. Joker is set to be released on October 4, 2019.

Why A Step Brothers Sequel Would Work, According To Kathryn Hahn

It has been ten years since Adam McKay's Step Brothers debuted in theaters, and the story of Dale (John C. Reilly) and Brennan (Will Ferrell) remains a modern comedy classic for many fans of the genre. The movie ends with the promise of more adventures for the maladjusted men, leading some to wonder if Step Brothers 2 could ever happen. Insiders have chimed in on the topic over the years, and Kathryn Hahn recently addressed the possibility and noted that it could definitely work because of how flexible the Step Brothers brand is. The Bad Moms star explained:

There's zero plot really in that movie anyway, you could do anything and call it a sequel. Anything [at all] and just have that group of people... [and] I would do it in a heartbeat.

She kind of has a point. The original Step Brothers felt built mainly on improv between its main ensemble of actors, and it was not a particularly narrative-driven film. If Adam McKay wanted to get the gang back together for another movie, there would be a lot of flexibility and room for comedy. All they would really need to do is wind up Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, Adam Scott, and all of the rest of the cast, and it would take care of itself. It's an interesting prospect, and as Kathryn Hahn noted in her recent chat with ET, she would quickly involve herself in the process if it ever gets that far, ideally to do a story that returns to the (fucking) Catalina Wine Mixer.

If you are a fan of the original Step Brothers, then it should be reasonably easy to get behind the possibility of Kathryn Hahn coming back as Alice Huff. Just look at one of her best (and very NSFW) scenes from the movie, below!

Of course, we should also take the time to point out that ideas for a possible Step Brothers sequel have been suggested in the decade since the first film debuted on the big screen. For example, during the recent promotional campaign for Daddy's Home 2, Will Ferrell spoke out and noted that the team behind the original film has toyed with the possibility of doing a sequel involving Dale and Brennan as they go to live at a retirement home.

With all of that said, we may need to wait quite a while before we see Step Brothers 2. During an interview with CinemaBlend earlier this year, Director Adam McKay specifically noted that the follow-up to the 2008 comedy could wait on the grounds that the potential for comedy doesn't diminish as Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly age. Many people are interested in making Step Brothers 2, but it doesn't sound like a priority.

At this point, it's anyone's guess as to whether or not Step Brothers 2 will happen. If nothing else, it's comforting to know that the folks who were involved in the original movie seem interested in coming back if the stars ever align. Why DC Is Making An Aquaman Spinoff About The Trench, According To The Producer

DC's live-action universe has had plenty of peaks and valleys, although the massive property seems to be on the upswing lately. Warner Bros. is currently surfing on the massive success of James Wan's Aquaman, which cleaned up at the box office, on top of being a critical success. We'll have to wait a few years for the film's sequel to arrive in 2022, but there's another underwater adventure in development by the studio: the spinoff The Trench.

The Trench sequence was one of the most visually fascinating aspects of Aquaman, as James Wan's horror roots briefly reached the surface of the aquatic blockbuster. So fans were delightfully surprised when Warner Bros. green-lit a spinoff for the dark sea setting. Producer Peter Safran recently spoke to the decision to dive deeper into into The Trench with a spinoff, revealing:

We always, even from the early concept art days, loved the idea of a Trench movie. Then, when audiences embraced it in the movie itself the way they did, particularly that ant farm shot where the camera follows the Trench [creatures] following Arthur and Mera down into the deep, we just knew that we had something very special there and we knew what that movie should be. And consequently, I suspect that thats one that will come out significantly before Aquaman 2.

Audiences may have been surprised, but it seems like the the groundwork for The Trench movie was being laid during the release of Aquaman. It ended up being audience engagement that made the spinoff truly become a reality. And as a reward to the fandom, they'll get another movie set in Aquaman's world before the film's actual sequel arrives in theaters.

Peter Safran's comments to THR illuminate the thought process going on at Warner Bros. regarding the future of the DC live-action universe. DC seems to be taking a much different approach than the competition over at Marvel Studios. Rather than revealing entire slates of movie scheduling, Warner Bros. can adjust its programming based on fan reception and box office performance. It feels like there's an exciting momentum in the shared universe, in stark juxtaposition to its state after the disappointing performance of Justice League.

The Trench is a mysterious part of the lore established in Aquaman. They're amphibious monsters who separated from the Atlantean Kingdom years ago. They attacked Mera and Arthur on their journey, before eventually joining their cause in an epic underwater battle against King Orm. It should be interesting to see how The Trench is expanded, and where in the overall timeline the spinoff will be set.

But perhaps the most important question is whether or not the great Julie Andrews will be back to play Karathen in either The Trench or Aquaman 2. Her inclusion in the first film was a delightful surprise, and she brought a ton of power to the behemoth creature.

Ryan Coogler's Black Panther is about to debut in theaters on February 16, which means T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) is finally going to take center stage as the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Wakandan king. That said, we already know that the Black Panther is a mantle, which raises questions about the possibility of a female Black Panther entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe, such as T'Challa's younger sister Shuri (Letitia Wright). Wright addressed this possibility in a recent interview, and while it's not currently a priority, there's "room" for something like that to happen. Wright explained:

We didn't talk about it in terms of the future. It was something I feel he was playing with [trying] to set up, but it didn't happen. Hopefully it does. I'm happy that there's room to allow Shuri to grow. I wanna sit with her a little bit more.

So, despite some early ideas that Ryan Coogler toyed with, there is currently no plan for Shuri or another female character to take on the mantle of Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Letitia Wright felt that Coogler laid some necessary groundwork to get a storyline like that off of the ground, but as of right now T'Challa is our one and only Black Panther. A passing of the torch could happen, but it's not guaranteed.

Among all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes, Black Panther feels like one that would be relatively easy to hand off to a female successor. The introduction of the character in Captain America: Civil War made it clear that Black Panther is just a mantle handed down to warriors of royal blood, and that means T'Challa could eventually hand the black mask off to someone else in the future, including his sister.

Letitia Wright's remarks to Variety about turning Shuri into the new Black Panther are not entirely without merit, as far as the comics are concerned. The character has a history of wearing the Vibranium suit in the comics, which means there's precedent in the source material to watch her become the protector of Wakanda if her older brother ever finds himself out of commission.

Then again, there are still plenty of other possible mantles for someone like Shuri to take on, as the Marvel Cinematic Universe presses forward into the future.
