Fantastic Four Writer Apologizes To Marvel Fans

In recent years, with a multitude of satisfying portrayals of Marvel characters in movies and television shows, one might easily forget the critical and box office wreck of 2015's Fantastic Four was. Reports of drama during production last-minute reshoots plagued the film during editing, and director Josh Trank's maintained that he had made "a fantastic version" that would never be seen. The movie was outright rejected by audiences. It earned one of the lowest box office openings for a Marvel- based film, and received overwhelmingly negative reviews. Fantastic Four was unnecessarily gloomy for a superhero film and left it's talent including Black Panther's Michael B. Jordan, to play uninteresting one-dimensional characters. Three years later, one of its writers, Jeremy Slater has made a little apology about Fox's big flop on Twitter. In his words:

And when I finally got my foot in the door, I only had three dream projects on my bucket list. One was Marvel (umm...sorry about that one, guys), one was Star Wars, and the third, of course, was Stephen King.

Now that the dust has settled and there have been a ton of Marvel movies, this recent tweet shows that now Jeremy Slater can laugh about the whole situation. He does share the blame with collaborators Simon Kinsberg, Josh Trank and 20th Fox, whose future is a mystery due to the pending Disney / Fox deal. As the movie tanked, the Marvel comic book went down with it, as the comic series was cancelled in 2014. But the Fantastic Four will soon see a comeback with Marvel comics, as a new book was announced in recent months. There's also the possibility of the Fantastic Four being reincarnated into the MCU as well.

Jeremy Slater made the comment amid an announcement of a new project he has been working on that is close to his heart. Starting the tweet thread with a picture of an 80s edition of the Stephen King novel, "The Tommyknockers", he shared that it was the first book he ever bought with his own money when he was just 10 years old. He then revealed that he is a part of the team creating the upcoming Tommyknockersfilm, with the novel adaptation set to be directed by The Conjuring director James Wan and with It producer Roy Lee also onboard.

In Jeremy Slater's entertainment career, he has primarily worked with the horror genre, most notably as the creator of The Exorcist television show, which was recently cancelled by Fox after two seasons. He also wrote the Netflix remake of manga Death Note and The Lazarus Effect, although both films didn't faire too well with audiences overall. With The Tommyknockers being a childhood favorite of Jeremy Slater's and having strong collaborators to work with, we're still rooting for the writer to have a successful dream project that will cast Fantastic Four further into the shadows.

Willem Dafoe Loves That Aquaman Was A Totally Different Experience From Spider-Man

It's been 18 years since the launch of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, but soon Willem Dafoe will be making his return to the comic book movie genre. Going from Marvel to DC, he is set to play Vulko in James Wan's Aquaman -- which will be out next month. Naturally the two filmmaking experiences were quite different for the actor, but this was something that Dafoe fully embraced, as he recently explained to me during an interview:

They are different. They're very different - because they have different aims. They're working with different materials, their working with different intentions. But that's okay! I like to mix it up because that way you don't get stuck. You don't start to believe that there's only one way of doing things, and you don't start believe there's only one way of living, and you don't start to believe there's only a certain kind of film that's worth making. It keeps you loose.

Before Aquaman makes its way into theaters, fans of Willem Dafoe will be able to see his impressive work in Julian Schnabel's At Eternity's Gate -- and it was at the new movie's Los Angeles press day that I got to sit down with the actor. After a discussion about his performance as famed artist Vincent Van Gogh, I asked him to compare and contrast his time on the Spider-Man and Aquaman sets, and he explained that while they were really totally different adventures, he really loved that variety.

In Spider-Man, of course, Willem Dafoe played Norman Osborn a.k.a. The Green Goblin, who was the main villain in the first movie, and then had cameos in the sequels. His role isn't quite as big in Aquaman, with Vulko serving as a mentor for the titular hero, but even beyond that it's pretty easy to see how the two productions likely differed. Hell, the new film is likely going to have him underwater for all of his scenes, which alone must have been a new experience.

Speaking to the contrasting comic book features on a larger level, Willem Dafoe explained that finding variety in the projects that he chooses is an important aspect of his work. He recognizes that he's at a special place in his career that allows him to make those kinds of choices, but he also feels that they are important in keeping him fully engaged with the work. Said the actor,

It's beautiful, and it's a privilege to be able to have those different experiences. And I don't value anything in judging one against the other. I have some preferences, but I don't lean on them. It's like my relationship with theater and film. I love doing theater, but when I'm doing theater I miss film a little bit. When I'm doing film, I love it, but I miss theater! I guess it's human nature.

DCs Shazam! Has Its Wizard, And Its Not Who You Thought

The DCEU will continue to grow next year with the highly-anticipated debut of David F. Sandberg's Shazam! on the big screen. There's a lot of fan anticipation to see what will happen when this decidedly lighter adventure joins the darker superhero universe, and the cast has become a particularly interesting element to watch. Though the film recently finished shooting, it looks like we now have some exciting casting news, as it turns out that Djimon Hounsou will appear in the movie as the Wizard.

Per a report from EW, it looks like Blood Diamond star Djimon Hounsou will appear in Shazam! as the Wizard who grants Billy Batson (Asher Angel) the powers to turn into the titular hero (Zachary Levi). Hounsou has apparently been cast for quite a while (as production on Shazam! has already been completed), but his involvement in the movie had not been made public until now. Previously, it had been reported that This Is Us star Ron Cephas Jones had signed onto Shazam! as the Wizard (and some fans had even begun making fan art of the actor in the role), but Jones ultimately had to turn down the part due to scheduling conflicts.

Ironically, this is the second movie that Djimon Hounsou has signed on for with a lead character who goes by the name of Captain Marvel -- though it's worth noting that we don't know if the Captain Marvel moniker will pop up in Shazam! The Gladiator actor is also set to reprise his Guardians of the Galaxy role, Korath, in Carol Danvers' upcoming solo movie. That film is set to debut in theaters less than a month before Shazam! premieres, so it looks like Hounsou is going full Josh Brolin in his ability to work in multiple superhero franchises at once.

Shazam! tells the story of a young orphan named Billy Batson growing up in the DC universe. A scrappy and streetwise kid, Billy eventually meets a Wizard who grants him the powers of the Gods of Olympus and allows him to turn into a muscle-bound hero by yelling out the name "Shazam!" In addition to the aforementioned members of the cast, David F. Sandberg has also enlisted Green Lantern veteran Mark Strong for the villainous role of Dr. Sivana, as well as several young actors to portray Billy's foster family.

Audiences will get a chance to see Djimon Hounsou as the 3,000-year-old Wizard when Shazam! hits theaters next year on April 5, 2019!
