Why I'm Excited For Disney+

At The Walt Disney Companys Investor Day presentation last week, the Mouse House finally revealed what it has in store for its upcoming Disney+ streaming service, and it is a lot. Disney is coming out guns blazing with a slew of content and an aggressive price point that make Disney+ a compelling value proposition for consumers in a crowded streaming field.

Theres a lot to be excited about when the service debuts this November, from the first ever live-action Star Wars series The Mandalorian to all the MCU series to the Imagineering documentary series. And Im hopeful that classic Disney catalog animated series like Adventures of the Gummi Bears, Gargoyles and Recess will finally be available in their entirety on Disney+.

All the TV coming to Disney+ is great, but Im also really excited for the potential benefits this new platform offers on the movies front. Read on to see why.

The MCU And Star Wars All In One PlaceThe Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars are the two most successful franchises ever, and eventually they will both be viewable in their entirety on Disney+. These franchises both have a high re-watchability factor, and if youre a fan of either of them, having guaranteed access to them anytime on Disney+ is an enticing prospect.

Once Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is out, youll be able to binge all nine films in the Skywalker Saga in one place. Consider the current situation with Avengers: Endgame as well. Many Marvel fans want to re-watch some of the previous MCU movies before The Infinity Saga comes to a close, but currently you cant do that on streaming, even across multiple services. You would have to own physical copies or pay rental fees. Even as an advocate of physical media, I find this appealing, especially since Disney+ will support 4K and HDR, so I wont need to upgrade nearly two dozen movies to get great quality.

New And Original MoviesDisney has found a lot of success theatrically thanks to its massive brands and recognizable IPs. The studio makes the most successful and popular blockbusters in the industry, but thats basically all it makes. There is a sameness and safety to Disneys theatrical strategy of rotating tentpoles from established properties that is wildly lucrative, but predictable. The Disney+ platform provides the company a way to do something different, as Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Productions President Sean Bailey said at the Investor presentation:

Disney+ affords us the opportunity to tell more stories from a variety of genres. We will always remain true to the values of what a Disney live-action film offers, but were able to take some risks, which is really exciting. While theatrical box office right now is being driven by giant blockbuster events, there are amazing stories and characters that are yearning to be enjoyed by the whole family.

For a studio sometimes criticized for only making blockbusters, this is exciting. Already Disney+ has the holiday comedy Noelle starring Anna Kendrick, the coming-of-age novel adaptation Stargirl and the kid caper Timmy Failure, to name a few. Its awesome to see Disney branching out, taking risks and allowing for more creative freedom by telling different kinds of stories than it does on the big screen. Sean Bailey also indicated that the same love and care will be given to these Disney+ movies as the companys theatrical titles, and thats exciting.

Remakes Of Less Popular Disney Animated MoviesThere is an argument to be made that Disney is going for cheap nostalgia dollars by remaking its animated classics in live-action, but people love them and they are largely successful. Yet as Dumbo recently showed, not all of the studios animated classics are really built to be box office smashes. But that doesnt mean they dont deserve a solid live-action remake, and Disney+ provides a place for a smaller-budgeted remake to land.

One of the launch titles for Disney+ is a live-action reimagining of Lady and the Tramp starring the voices of Justin Theroux and Tessa Thompson. Theres also a remake in the works of The Sword in the Stone. Disney may run out of titles popular enough to be big screen blockbusters, but its catalog is extensive and has many films that could find new life in remakes on Disney+. Wed love to see Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Treasure Planet get some love too, but those two might require big screen budgets. The Black Cauldron maybe?

Live-Action Sequels And Reboots Could Have A Chance On Disney+This isnt so much a promise of Disney+, but a hope for the nascent streaming service. Disney has a long history full of great and beloved titles beyond its revered animated movies. Disney hasnt indicated as such, but it seems like an ideal place for reboots and sequels of the studios live-action properties that no longer fit within its big-screen strategy. Or more specifically, the long awaited, frequently-asked-for National Treasure 3.

Bob Iger hasnt doused hopes for National Treasure 3, and if finding a place for it on Disneys crowded theatrical calendar was a problem, that obstacle could be removed if it releases on Disney+ instead. The hope for National Treasure 3 isnt the only exciting possibility though. A reboot of The Rocketeer was in the works, and while we havent heard much about it recently, that too may be have a better chance to soar on Disney+. And that reported TV movie reboot of Hocus Pocus should really be a proper sequel dropping on Disney+ next Halloween.

No More VaultHas there ever been a more brilliant and infuriating invention than the Disney Vault? Disneys strategy of only making its animated movies available on home video for a limited time to create demand and make each re-release an event has long frustrated fans of the studios classic films. Disney has even employed this tactic in the streaming and digital realms; with the Aladdin remake on its way, the 1992 original is unavailable for streaming or digital purchase.

Like Robin Hood stealing from Prince John, Disney+ is busting that vault wide open and raiding it for subscribers. The vault program will not apply on the service and Disney+ will be the one-stop shop for fans of Disneys animated classics. That means no more searching stores or different streaming services in vain when the mood strikes you to watch one of your childhood favorites. That convenience is awesome and as someone who grew up with Disneys animated movies, it will be nice to know I can watch them all in one place.

It is still early and Disney+ hasnt even launched yet, but it already has a lot going for it. The potential for Disney+ to reward Disney fans by offering both beloved existing films and unique new movies is immediately evident and exciting.

Creed II Originally Brought Back Apollo As A Ghost

Creed II was about facing up to the ghosts of one's past, but it seems that at one point there may have been a plan to include an actual ghost. Dolph Lundgren recently revealed that in an early script of Creed II there was apparently a plan for the story to include Apollo Creed himself. Lundgren much prefers the decision to bring back another Rocky IV co-star, Brigitte Nielsen, instead. According to Lundgren...

It was a great idea I thought [to bring Nielsen back]. In the original first draft it was Apollo came back. Or like his ghost or something. It was a little hokey, you know. So I think it was much better to bring Brigitte back.

Unfortunately, Dolph Lundgren doesn't elaborate on his comments, which he made during a Q&A at Monster-Mania Con 42 in Cherry Hill, New Jersey over this past weekend. That means we have no idea exactly how this idea of Apollo Creed returning in Creed II was originally supposed to be handled.

Sylvester Stallone has recently stated that he now feels the decision to kill Apollo Creed in Rocky IV may have been the wrong one, if only because he so enjoyed working with actor Carl Weathers. Perhaps that led Stallone, who co-wrote the screenplay for Creed II, to try and find a way to include him.

Obviously, it seems unlikely that the actual plan had been to include Apollo Creed's ghost. Perhaps there would have been a dream sequence of some kind where either Rocky or Adonis Creed finds himself across from Apollo. Of course, just creating a "ghost" version of Apollo would have been one of the more complicated things in the movie. Creed II isn't exactly a visusal effects blockbuster but a lot of that would have been necessary to bring Apollo Creed back.

However you look at it, it feels awkward, which is probably why the scene never made it into the final film. Still, the desire to include Apollo, and Carl Weathers, in the movie in some way certainly makes sense. It's understandable that people would want to try. There's just no good way to do it.

And at the same time, if Apollo Creed doesn't die in Rocky IV, then Creed II, really the entire Creed franchise becomes an entirely different pair of films. Apollo's death in Rocky IV is one of the iconic moments of the entire series.

In the end, bringing Brigitte Nielsen back for Creed II was clearly something that was much easier to do. And it was certainly impactful as well. Nielsen's return helps put the story of Ivan Drago into a context that we never got to see in Rocky IV. It makes the villain of the earlier movie a much more sympathetic character in the sequel.

While bringing Apollo back in any way would have been a nice nod, it would not have meant as much to the actual story. And who knows. There's always Creed III.

A Walt Disney World Roller Coaster May Be About To Undergo A Major Change

UPDATE: Following publication of the original story, we spoke to someone at Disney who confirmed there are no current plans to retheme the Rock N Roller Coaster. You can read the entirety of the original story published below...The one constant at Walt Disney World is change, and it looks like another part of the theme park is about to undergo such a change. A new report claims that the Rock N' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith at Disney's Hollywood Studios is set for a major retheming, so it may not feature Aerosmith much longer.

The detail is little more than a footnote in a story about all the money that Disney is set to spend on its global theme park business over the next few years. Walt Disney World just saw the recent opening of Toy Story Land at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge is set to open at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland next year, and a new Marvel-themed area is set for Disney California Adventure the year after that. Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong are also set for new lands and attractions featuring everything from Frozen to Ant-Man and the Wasp.

These are all changes that were known, but among all of them is listed one item in the New York Times story that hadn't been previously reported. A map of Disney's Hollywood Studios is included which, along with items like the upcoming Mickey Mouse ride and Galaxy's Edge reads "Re-themed roller coaster (overhauled)." The spot on the map where this note is made is over the current location of the Rock N' Roller Coaster.

There are two Rock N' Roller Coasters in the world, though the one at Disneyland Paris we already knew was on the way to being replaced by an Iron Man/Avengers roller coaster. It's possible there's been some confusion and the NYT is claiming the Disney's Hollywood Studios' version is being replaced when it is not, confusing it with Paris.

However, if one version of the ride is being taken out, it could mean that Disney Parks has eyes on replacing both. The roller coaster is nearly 20-years-old at this point, and the last time it made any sort of news it wasn't for a good reason. Disney had to deal with what was viewed by some as an obscene gesture from Steven Tyler in one of the video clips played as part of the attraction. Even though the moment had been part of the ride for over a decade, it became "a thing" a couple years back.

The current attraction sees guest move through a queue designed to look like a recording studio. Guests are supposed to be special guests of Aerosmith at a concert, but you're running late, so your limo needs to floor it. Your limo, in this case, is the roller coaster vehicle, themed to look like a really stretched limo. The coaster uses a magnetic launch, which means there's no need to go up a hill to get moving quickly, the ride hits full speed immediately. It also immediately goes into a loop. It's the only coaster at all of Walt Disney World that has an inversion. It has three in total. Of course, Aerosmith music plays loudly over in-car speakers throughout the ride.

The fact that the note states the ride is set to be "overhauled" means the change, if it is, in fact, happening, means more than a simple retheming. If whatever deal Disney has with Aerosmith was coming to an end, the park could record new material with a new band, and simply replace who was "starring" in the attraction. But overhaul makes it sound like the whole concept is being reset.

It's not all that shocking an idea. Disney's Hollywood Studios has been undergoing some serious changes in recent years. It's the one park at Walt Disney World that has been underperforming in the eyes of the company. The inclusions of Toy Story Land, Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, and the new Mickey Mouse ride are part of those changes. It's unlikely any part of the current park is really safe. And with the two new lands being open a year from now, if any other part of the park was going to close down, that would be the best time to do it.

It will be interesting to see what the plan is if indeed the attraction is being replaced. It's unlikely that Disney's Hollywood Studios will see the same new coaster that Disneyland Paris is getting. previous deals that Marvel made with Universal Studios prior to being purchased by Disney limit what Marvel characters can appear at Walt Disney World, so unless Disney is in negotiations to end that deal, its language basically allows Universal to keep using Marvel in its parks for as long as it wants.

It's possible we could see some other sort of Marvel coaster though. The Guardians of the Galaxy coaster currently under construction at Epcot is open to Disney because Universal never used those characters in its park. If there are other Marvel characters that are available for Disney to use, they might try to theme a new attraction around them.

With the coaster being on the opposite end of the park from where Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, and the fact that the new area will include it's own thrill rides, we can guess it won't be a Star Wars themed ride.

Recent rumors have implied Indiana Jones could be in line for his own area of the park, but those rumors are focused on the part of the park currently home to the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular, which is in more or less the middle of the park.

This would seem to limit the options to more traditional Disney animated properties or a non-Toy Story Pixar brand. Maybe Hollywood Studios will see its own, indoor, version of the Incredicoaster.

Disney is having a major event in Florida right now for its D23 fan club members, Destination D. We're expecting to get some news about the theme parks over the course of the weekend. It's been rumored that the same Mickey Mouse attraction going into Hollywood Studios will also be coming to Disneyland and that the official announcement will come this weekend. Perhaps we'll get some confirmation of this change, one way or the other, very soon. If the change is happening, we'll likely find out what will be replacing it as well.

Is Kill Bill One Movie, Or Two?

How many films has Quentin Tarantino made? Your answer depends on your personal opinion of the director's sprawling revenge opera, Kill Bill. Is the Uma Thurman-led film Tarantino's fourth AND fifth film? Or just his fourth, forced to be split in two by producer Harvey Weinstein instead of subjecting QT to the demanded edits of "Harvey Scissorhands"?

This is a debate that erupted on the most recent episode of ReelBlend, a weekly podcast hosted by myself, Kevin McCarthy and Jake Hamilton. We were debating our favorite movie openings of all time, and swirled our conversation around Inglourious Basterds and Pulp Fiction. But when I said to my co-hosts that Kill Bill was two films -- and that Vol. 2 is significantly worse than Vol. 1 -- their heads exploded. They only see Kill Bill as one movie, because that's how Tarantino intended it to be shown. For real, listen to their heads explode in this week's episode:

So, we put it to a poll. And ReelBlend listeners largely agreed with me: It's two movies. One story, maybe. But definitely two movies.

So, what are the arguments? Those who stand by "Kill Bill is one movie" point to the fact that Tarantino filmed Kill Bill in one shot, and only relented to two Volumes after Harvey Weinstein started pushing for the removal of sequences that he considered vital to the movie's success. Knowing that he didn't want to cut huge chunks out of the overall story, the director allowed them to be split. In fact, Quentin Tarantino has a full cut of the Kill Bill saga, known as The Whole Bloody Affair, which was rumored to make it to DVD and Blu-ray... but hasn't yet. Tarantino screened The Whole Bloody Affair at his New Beverly theater in Los Angeles on the occasion of his birthday. So there's that.

Those who see Kill Bill as two movies point to the fact that Vol. 2 exists. Yes, Quentin Tarantino was pressured by Harvey Weinstein to cut the full movie in half, but the director agreed to do it. Plus, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 don't seamlessly merge together. Vol. 2 actually has its own opening credits, with a full sequence of Uma Thurman explaining everything that happened in the first movie. If Vol. 2 truly was a straight continuation of Vol. 1, these add-ons wouldn't be necessary. And if there was one long cut of Kill Bill, QT wouldn't put credits in the middle of his movie.

Ultimately, it doesn't change much. However you perceive Kill Bill doesn't alter the story. But we found it funny that different groups of Tarantino fans can have staunchly different takes on the perception of the director's film (or films). Kill Bill was split into two movies against Tarantino's will. His vision has always been a single film. In splitting the movie, several significant changes/sacrifices had to be made, and personally I think the movie loses a lot from the split.

Which half of Kill Bill do you think is better? Volume 1 or 2? I have to go with Vol. 2. The characters are much more interesting in Vol. 2. Pai Mei, Estabon, Bud and Bill are better than about everyone in Vol. 1 IMO. Hanzo Hatori was cool, though. I can't believe that the guy who played Estabon is the same guy who played the sheriff in Vol. 1.
