Why Black Panther's Agent Ross Is Different From The Comics

Warning! SPOILERS for Black Panther to follow. See it first, it's good!

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is full of fun and interesting characters beyond just the main heroes, and Black Panther is no different. Ryan Coogler's film features many new and exciting characters, some of which we're excited to see return in a more prominent role. One side character that previously appeared in Captain America: Civil War, but took on a bigger role in Black Panther, was Martin Freeman's Everett Ross. The character takes on a much more active role in Black Panther and in so doing, the Everett Ross of the MCU further differentiated himself from his comic book inspiration. In the comics Everett Ross is a timid and straight-laced kind of guy and as Martin Freeman explained, he wanted something different for the character's on-screen depiction, saying:

I, to be honest, wasn't massively keen to play that. I certainly wasn't massively keen to play that in the context of Black Panther. Just because I think the trope of a nervous white guy, cool black guy, we've seen it a million times before breakfast. So yeah, I wasn't mostly keen. Fortunately, Ryan [Coogler] and Nate Moore weren't massively keen either on that. So we talked a lot about what he might be. It's not like I shaped Ross into what he ended up being. I think, you know, that was [who] he was going to be. But I definitely threw my 10 cents in as far as who he might be.

Martin Freeman is correct that the "nervous white guy around a cool black guy" character has been done to death, so I can understand why he wouldn't want to play it that way, as he explained to Den of Geek. The actor already played the perpetually nervous white guy before in the first season of the excellent Fargo TV series. It sounds like Martin Freeman didn't have a lot of input, but Ryan Coogler wound up taking the character in a different direction anyway, and one that was less "nervous nelly" and more "guy in a bit over his head."

Agent Ross isn't exactly cool in Black Panther, at least not with Shuri, T'Challa and Nakia as around, but he is a character with agency who proves himself capable and useful. Although he isn't quite as nervous as his comic book counterpart, he is clueless at times about Wakanda and its technology, and is obviously concerned about the implications of Wakanda's power on the global stage. He is very much out of his element once the plot shifts back to Wakanda and is playing a lot of catch up, which is understandable. Plus, there was no way to prepare for a teenage girl calling him a 'colonizer.'

In Black Panther, Martin Freeman's Agent Ross strikes a nice balance between the sweaty-palmed bureaucrat of the comics and a capable character who is a real asset to the team. Part of this stems from his different background in the film universe. Everett Ross is a frequent presence in the Black Panther comics where he worked as a State Department liaison to T'Challa and Wakanda, but in the MCU, he is a CIA operative who works in a counter-terrorism capacity. He may not get a fancy suit or powers, but that is a badass job. That makes him far better suited to MCU adventures than his comic book counterpart. This shows when in the film's third act, Agent Ross proves an integral part of the team to reclaim the Wakandan throne as he stops the advanced tech from leaving the country.

Why Black Panther Overperformed At The Box Office

Predicting box office results on opening weekend has always been more art than science. Having said that, generally speaking, the numbers that are predicted weeks or even months ahead of time turn out to be pretty close to correct. However, in the case of Black Panther, the predictions were short by tens of millions of dollars. While predictions were rising to be as high as $170 million, the real number is actually over $200 million for Thursday night through Sunday, and will be even more when the four-day holiday weekend is taken into account.

Why was the number off by so much? There are a few reasons why this success was essentially impossible to predict

It's The First MCU Movie To Release In FebruaryBox office predictions primarily come by looking back at similar situations for similar movies and looking at how those films did. When you release new Star Wars movies all in mid-December or Pirates of the Caribbean movies on Memorial Day Weekend all the time, you can look at how previous films did, make some adjustments based on how the franchise is being viewed currently, and come up with a pretty good guess of what the final numbers will be.

The equation for Black Panther probably goes something like this: The biggest domestic opening weekend Marvel has ever had was for The Avengers at $207 million. However, that movie had all of Marvel's biggest names in one film, it was also released in May, which has become part of the summer movie season and people are more apt to go to the movies then. Black Panther is the first time this character had a starring role, and the movie is coming out in February, a much slower cinema month.

On the other hand, Deadpool was a superhero movie that was also released in February that was also the first time out for the character. It's a closer comparison to Black Panther. It did $132 million on opening weekend. But Black Panther is part of the MCU and the character did create some fans in his one previous appearance, which Deadpool didn't have. Predicting Black Panther would do better than Deadpool made sense, but it's essentially impossible to guess by how much.

Infrequent Moviegoers Can't Be PredictedThe problem with the normal model, in the case of Black Panther, is that studios are only able to base predictions on the people who went to the movies last time. This usually works because, especially in the case of franchises, on an opening weekend you're likely to only draw in die-hard fans. You're not going to get a large number of new fans to a series on opening weekend. Regardless, you're dealing with a known pool of potential ticket buyers, a class of people known as "moviegoers."

However, what's clear here is that Black Panther drew a significant quantity of people to the theater that, quite simply, don't usually go to the movies. An MPAA study from 2016 found that African Americans make up 15% of frequent moviegoers, however, according to the demographics from ComScore, African-Americans made up 37% of the opening night audience for Black Panther. Based on the numbers, we can be confident that more traditional moviegoers didn't stay home, but a lot of additional people went to the movies this weekend. How do you predict how many people who don't go to movies will go to your movie? You can't.

It's A Shared ExperienceIt was clear leading into this past weekend that Black Panther wasn't just a movie, it was an event. While the character wasn't the first black superhero, he was the first of the current crop of superhero films that have come out when the genre is at the top of the entire industry. African-Americans wanted to see this happen. They wanted to see themselves represented on the big screen. They wanted to be there opening weekend when it all started. This wasn't a case of a bunch of individuals or couples going to the movies in droves. This was groups of people going together.

This is reminiscent of when Wonder Woman came out last year. Box office expectations for that movie actually had people worried because they were looking low, but it proceeded to have a massive (though not this massive) opening weekend and continued to be strong for several weeks. This came from multiple generations of women going to the movies together. The same thing is happing with Black Panther right now.

When you put something on screen that's never been there before, you're going to attract different audiences. They're superhero movies, sure, and superhero movie fans showed up. But this time, so did everybody else.

That Time Rami Malek And Bradley Cooper Had A Moment During The Oscars 2019 Class Photo

It's Oscars 2019 weekend, and most of the people in the video below are going to lose. They won't lose as hard as The Rest Of Us for not even being nominated, and it probably won't sting as bad as the recent Razzies winners/losers. But still. The Best Actor Oscar looks like it's leaning toward Rami Malek for Bohemian Rhapsody, but Sunday's big show will give the answer. Bradley Cooper will also be on hand for A Star Is Born. The two Best Actor nominees shared a little moment during the Oscars class photo luncheon earlier this month.

You can hear the voice of Academy board member Laura Dern as this video-taker pans the class. Toward the end, around the :31 mark, you see Bradley Cooper lean back during the applause to have a word with Rami Malek:

Every year the Oscar nominees do a "class photo" and this one was held Monday, February 4 at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. As the camera pans, you can see all of the famous and less-than-famous names nominated this year.

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige is there in the hat, standing to Lady Gaga's left, repping for Best Picture nominee Black Panther. Laura Dern introduced the man between Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper as Best Documentary Feature nominee RaMell Ross. The woman between Cooper and Rami Malek was introduced as Makeup and Hairstyling nominee Pamela Goldammer.

The Best Actor race this year feels like it's already settled for Rami Malek, who previously won Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Award, and BAFTA awards for playing Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. But we shall see; here is the competition in that Best Actor category:
