Elle Fanning Belts It Out In Teen Spirit Trailer

With the triumph of musical drama A Star is Born, a resurgence of the genre could be afoot. Teen Spirit, the upcoming indie lead by 20-year-old Elle Fanning looks like it could cater well to fans of the buzzy Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga film. Check out the first trailer:

Teen Spirit follows Elle Fanning's Violet, a timid teen who has aspirations to become a pop star and run away from her small town and tumulus family life. She enters a fierce international singing competition called "Teen Spirit" and receives help from a mentor, played by Pusher's Zlatko Buric, aiming to go far in the competition.

The trailer from Bleeker Street and and LD Entertainment sets up the character's normal life working as a waitress and on a small farm, before seeing a neon pink "Teen Spirit" audition sign on her morning bus commute. From there, Violet auditions and makes it into the contest with a crowd of other young singers and moves through the competition.

The first look at Teen Spirit includes Elle Fanning showing off her vocals as she sings Robyn's 2010 dance-pop hit "Dancing On My Own." The trailer also teases that Fanning will be singing songs from Ellie Goulding, Tegan & Sara, Annie Lennox, Orbital and Sigrid. Teen Spirit will also feature an original song written by Carly Rae Jepsen and Bleachers' Jack Antonoff titled "Wildflowers."

The upcoming musical drama is written and directed by actor Max Minghella, best known for his role as Nick Blaine on The Handmaid's Tale. Teen Spirit marks his directorial debut and has La La Land producer Fred Berger involved as well. The film looks to be an elegant and artsy release that celebrates the alternative pop music of today, and tracks the emotional journey of Elle Fanning's character.

Elle Fanning has been acting on movie sets since she was a three-year-old, finding her breakout role in J.J. Abrams Super 8 in 2011. Since, the actress has primarily starred in independent films and as Princess Aurora in Disney's Maleficent in 2014. She is joined by fellow young actress Millie Brady in Teen Spirit, who will soon be seen in Netflix's The Witcher series sometime in 2019 and Holmes And Watson's Rebecca Hall.

Rebecca Hall and Fanning also recently worked together on Woody Allen's latest film, A Rainy Day in New York, though has yet-to-be-released by Amazon Studios as the director recently made headlines for allegations of sexual misconduct.

When Teen Spirit comes to theaters on April 5, 2019 it will certainly be facing some fierce competition, since Shazam! and Stephen King adaptation Pet Sematary share the same release date. But this under-the-radar film is definitely worth checking out for fans of alternative pop music, Elle Fanning's impressive acting chops, and for fans of some surefire vocal competition show drama.





I can respect that Snyder had a vision for a self-contained series. But it really ought to have been marketed as such (rather than as the DCEU) and limited to JUST Batman and Superman. Maybe Wonder Woman, but Snyder didn't really take full advantage of her either.

Marvel Boss 'Heartbroken' About Black Panther's Oscar Loss

A decade after the injustice of The Dark Knights Best Picture snub, a superhero movie was finally nominated for the Academy Awards highest honor. That film was Marvel Studios Black Panther, a box office behemoth and cultural phenomenon that went on to collect three golden statues, but missed out on Best Picture. That was a disappointment to many, including Avi Arad, the former Marvel Studios CEO and Chairman and longtime Marvel producer. Speaking about Black Panthers Oscar loss, Avi Arad said:

I was heartbroken that Black Panther didnt get the Academy. It could have, but you know, [the voters] they always looked at superheroes like it was a Yabba dabba doo kind of a thing versus something that mattered or something that was going to last.

Despite no longer being with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad was still rooting for Black Panther to get the win for Best Picture at the 2019 Academy Awards, so much so that he was heartbroken when the statue went to Green Book instead. Avi Arad clearly believed that Black Panther was deserving of the award, but as he told Deadline, he thinks that Academy voters still look at superheroes as some Fred Flintstone silliness that is beneath more traditional Oscar films.

That Academy bias against from superhero movies is well established, but the tide has slowly begun to turn, especially after The Dark Knight, with movies like Logan earning an Oscar nomination and Black Panthers 7 nominations. Nevertheless, Avi Arad still seems to believe that some voters feel that superhero movies dont matter and wont stand the test of time.

You can certainly understand Avi Arads investment in comic book movies and desire to see them not only succeed, but also be recognized as art with value that is deserving of the kind of recognition that films considered more highbrow receive. Avi Arad has been working on Marvel projects for decades and believes in the brand.

Avi Arad was an executive producer on the beloved 90s X-Men animated series, and the 2000 X-Men film that began the comic book movie age. Hes had his hands in the genres highs like Spider-Man 2 and its lows like Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer. It must mean a lot to him to see the genre come so far, and it makes sense that he would want it to finally attain the respect and legitimacy that a Best Picture win rightfully or wrongly confers.

Alas, Black Panther did not win Best Picture, but it did win three other Oscars: Best Costume Design, Best Original Score and Best Production Design. Avi Arad wanted it to win more, but Best Picture was always a long shot and it is certainly a trend in the right direction. And he is far from the only one who is disappointed with how Best Picture turned out.

The night wasnt a total loss though, far from it. Through his Avi Arad Productions, Avi Arad was a producer on Sonys Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which took home the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

This Rotten Week: Predicting Aladdin, Booksmart, And Brightburn Reviews

The Memorial Day weekend has practically always been a key time for studios to pull out the big guns, and they aren't disappointing in 2019. Disney continues its march to turn its whole animated catalogue into live-action films, two nerds get one last night of high school redemption, and a classic superhero origin story is upended in a creepy way. Get ready for Aladdin, Booksmart and Brightburn.

Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. Let's take a look at This Rotten Week has to offer.

Since 2007, Will Smith has acted in exactly one movie - Men in Black III (68%) - that has finished on the positive side of the Tomatometer. The rest of his resume during this time has been at best below average, and at worst sneakily very bad. It includes total stinkers like Bright (25%), Collateral Beauty (14%) and Suicide Squad (27%) along with merely meh flicks like Concussion (59%) and Focus (56%). We just arent seeing many fresh tomatoes next to his name. Is Aladdin the film that breaks him out of the critical doldrums? I want to believe it is, but that's far from a certainty.Guy Ritchie directs Aladdin, and he's had a good amount of success with critics in recent years. The filmmaker helmed a flop last time out in the form of King Arthur (31%), but also has Man From U.N.C.L.E. (67%) and the last two Sherlock Holmes movies (60% and 70% respectively). The trailers for Aladdin make it look like a movie that wants to have fun with the live action version of the Disney classic, while also providing some fresh, stunning visuals. The fact that there are no early reviews has me a little skeptical, but its tough to imagine this doesnt finish, at the minimum, on the positive side of 50 percent.

Being an absolute sucker for the Its the last night of our lives as rambunctious youths and our existence will be defined by the next 24 hours movies, Booksmart looks like it is right in my wheelhouse. Two bookworms on the cusp of high school graduation realize theyve spent the better part of their teens buried in their studies while being accepted to the same colleges as their fun-having peers, and the only remedy is to cram four years worth of living into one night. Lets get it on!

Booksmart is Olivia Wildes directorial debut, and early reviews suggest that she knocked it out of the park. Its sitting at 100% on the Tomatometer with 55 reviews posted, and critics are using using words/phrases like "endlessly funny, smart, and flawless." This is high praise, and we could be talking about the flick moving into the pantheon of great high school movies when its all said and done.

Sometimes an alien baby crash lands to Earth in the middle of America, is raised by a pair of loving farmers and becomes the beacon of hope and good in the world by donning a red cape, flying around, and fighting for justice. And sometimes that alien baby goes, well, a different direction. Such is the case in Brightburn, which looks like the darkest Superman story ever told

A kid, sent from somewhere, realizes he has superpowers and chooses to use them for overwhelming bad on the townsfolk whom he believes have mistreated him. It looks like your standard hero film, just in stark reverse. I think a certain crowd will love this take on the genre, but critics are unlikely to go for it. I think it finishes well below the 50 percent mark.

The Rotten Watch went two for three last week, with two movies finishing within ten percent of my prediction. John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (Predicted: 90% Actual: 88%) was a rather easy one considering how many reviews were already in early at the time of publication. This result keeps the rather surprising franchise going, and the first three flicks have scores of 86%, 89% and 88%, respectively. Frankly, thats almost unbelievable considering the hardcore nature of the movie. Be prepared for many more John Wicks to come.

A Dogs Journey (Predicted: 59% Actual: 49%) was the other win, just barely falling within range. The follow up to A Dogs Purpose (34%) finished significantly higher than its predecessor. It apparently still isnt a good movie by any means, but appeared to fulfill its mission as a vanilla, sappy movie that wont create any waves and is good enough to bring the whole family to the theater.

Finally, The Sun Is Also A Star (Predicted: 30% Actual: 51%) was a miss. Though still technically rotten, the score fell out of range by a healthy margin. Even critics who gave it positive reviews seemed to do so almost apologetically, admitting the flick had a number of flaws and was heavy on the cliches. Regardless, my score was off the mark.

What It's Like To Work With Sylvester Stallone On Rambo V: Last Blood

Sylvester Stallone will be returning to one of his classic action hero characters later this year in Rambo V: Last Blood. It will be the first time in over a decade that Stallone has played the character of John Rambo, but based on the testimony of his co-stars, the actor hasn't lost a step. In fact, quite the opposite, Stallone is a consummate performer and ever the professional.

Dimitri Thivaios is one of those costars and according to him, he learned more about acting watching Sylvester Stallone work than by actually taking classes. According to Thivaios...

[It] was amazing hes a hard-working , true professional that sees everything happening on set. You just get sucked into that vibe. I learned more from watching him work him in the time we were shooting than I did in all my years of acting class.

Sylvester Stallone shares a screenplay credit on Rambo V: Last Blood in addition to starring as the lead, so he's much more than simply an actor here. However, it seems clear based on Dimitri Thivaios' comments that Stallone had almost a director's perspective on the film, paying attention to everything that was happening on set. While Stallone isn't the director here, he's had more than his share of experience in the job, and thus probably uses those skills at all times.

Dimitri Thivaios is fairly new to acting, having made his career in the music industry under the name Dimitri Vegas. He's had a few roles in film and on TV in the past but they've been pretty small parts up until now. Exactly what role he's playing in Rambo V: Last Blood has not been revealed so it's unclear if it's another bit part or something more substantial.

The story will see John Rambo go from his family ranch in Arizona into Mexico after the daughter of a friend is taken by members of a cartel.

While the Rambo franchise doesn't have quite the passionate fan base that the Rocky movies have had, it is still a well loved character. Dimitri Thivaios himself says he has a particular attachment to the film as tells Variety that First Blood, the original film in the series, was likely the first action movie he ever saw as a kid.

He had to see it behind his mother's back, which isn't surprising. First Blood isn't just a bloody and violent action movie, it's fairly disturbing one, as, while John Rambo is the hero, he's also a man dealing with some serious issues as a result of his service in Vietnam.

Based on the title of the fifth installment, it doesn't feel like a stretch to believe that Rambo V: Last Blood will be the final part of this series. We'll see how John Rambo ends his story September 20.
