Suicide Squad Director David Ayer Supports James Gunn Doing The Sequel

After James Gunn was controversially fired from directing Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it seemed likely that it wouldn't be long before another studio scooped him up. It now looks like that has happened, with new reports saying that Gunn will be writing and possibly directing Suicide Squad 2. This is a huge coup for the DCEU, and the man who helmed the first Suicide Squad, David Ayer, supports it:

I think David Ayer's sentiments line up with a lot of fans' in regard to this hiring. Warner Bros. made a brave move by hiring someone who just went through a whirlwind of controversy that saw him getting fired from a wildly successful franchise. The studio has seemingly decided it was willing to bear whatever criticism may come in order to bring James Gunn on board.

As David Ayer says, it's a smart move to bring James Gunn on regardless of the capacity he ultimately fills. The writer/director has shown his talent in this space multiple times, and with a band of misfit characters just like the Suicide Squad, and it seems that was enough for the studio to decide that Suicide Squad 2 is better in his hands than someone else's.

David Ayer's Twitter support is cool if not just because you don't always see directors being super happy when they are replaced for a sequel. Suicide Squad was a financial success when it was released in the summer of 2016, but it did not win over critics, and the belief at large is that the quality level suffered from studio meddling. So it's nice to see that Ayer doesn't hold any bitterness about the gig, and is happy to hand off the reigns to someone like James Gunn.

Of course, while he isn't directing Suicide Squad 2, David Ayer also hasn't left the DCEU. He is taking the breakout character of his Suicide Squad, Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, and directing her again in the upcoming Gotham City Sirens. The project doesn't have a release date yet, but is expected after Cathy Yan's Birds Of Prey, which is scheduled for 2020.

It will be very interesting to see, especially if James Gunn winds up writing and directing, just how much creative control Warner Bros. affords him. We think he is great for Suicide Squad 2 but in the DC Extended Universe it sometimes seems like the director's vision is only occasionally what actually makes it to the big screen. Stan Lee's Second Into The Spider-Verse Cameo Has Been Spotted

Stan Lees first (but not last) posthumous cameo in a comic book movie came in a touching scene with Miles Morales in Decembers spectacular Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. But we've heard that scene is not the only time the comic book legend shows up in the film, and finding him will be a challenge for eagle-eyed fans. Now weve got a look at Stan Lees second Into the Spider-Verse cameo, courtesy of one of the films animators. Take a look:

Stan the Man! This cameo is truly a blink and youll miss it moment and you can see why animator Nick Kondos tweet says to have fun framing through the movie when it hits home video. Trying to spot this cameo while the movie is running would be like playing Wheres Waldo, with the page flipping every second. Going frame by frame is the only way youd spot Stan Lee on the train in this sequence.

This cameo is a great one too. Not only does Stan Lee appear where we dont expect to see him, but he is also doing the web shooter pose with his hand, which he was often photographed doing on red carpets. To see him doing that in a Spider-Man movie (and arguably the best Spider-Man movie) based on the character he created with Steve Ditko is just perfect.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse directors Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman said that every animator wanted a chance to animate Stan Lee, so he appears in several crowd shots. This should provide a fun challenge for fans when the movie releases on home video.

This cameo shows that they were being truthful and that the word challenge was quite appropriate for this task. I expect many a Marvel fan will have their work cut out for them on this hunt come March. Of course, rewatching Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse multiple times sounds like anything but a chore.

Stan Lees sad passing means that he wont be filming any more comic book movie cameos and we'll soon observe the last of him onscreen. But Spider-Verse cameos like this one show a cool way he could still show up in the movies, at least the animated ones, like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verses sequel and spinoff.

Stan Lee obviously wouldnt speak, but would just appear in the background as tribute and as a reminder of how even though he is gone, he lives on through his creations. Stan Lees presence and impact is all around if youre willing to look.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse arrives on Blu-ray, 4K and digital on March 19th. Before that, Spider-Verse will compete at the 91st Academy Awards where it is nominated for Best Animated Feature Film.

Marvel Rumor Claims Black Widow May Be Another Period Piece

Fans of Black Widow rejoiced at the revelation that the character is finally in line to get her own movie, and now we may know more about what it will actually be about. There a new rumor going around, and while it needs to be stressed that this is a rumor only, it would reportedly set at least part of the Black Widow movie at the turn of the millennium and involve the Y2K bug specifically.

The rumor comes via MCU Cosmic from an unnamed source, and so grains of salt must be taken because we can't even begin to verify it. Still, with the upcoming Captain Marvel movie being set in the 1990s as well, the idea that a Black Widow movie could be set at the end of the same decade is certainly plausible. Even if this rumor is true, it doesn't even mean the entire movie will be a 90s period piece, as it could simply mean that part of the movie could flashback to the decade and show a young Black Widow, approximately 16 -years-old based on what we know of the character, perhaps with a storyline that connects to the modern day.

Based on the previously established MCU timeline for Black Widow, this would likely still put the character in her 'Red Room" years where she was still working for the Soviet Union. As such, the plot of the film could deal with how she broke away and eventually ended up working for S.H.I.E.L.D. There's certainly no argument that this would be a story fans would very likely want to see on the big screen.

The specific mention of Y2K is an interesting one. While it was a non-event in reality, perhaps in the MCU it was a real problem, or, perhaps it could have been a real problem, had it not been for whatever events take place in the movie. It's an interesting idea for a twist on reality that the film can obviously have some fun with.

This rumor would be at odds with some of what we had previously heard about when the film would be set, as earlier rumors indicated the movie could take place some 15 or so years after the fall of the Soviet Union. This would set the movie a good five or so years earlier than that. It makes one wonder whether Scarlett Johansson would actually play the role of Black Widow in scenes that take place in that era. Avengers: Age of Ultron did a good job aging the actress down for the brief flashbacks but one wonders if the new film can pull off making her appear 16 for large sequences or possibly an entire film.

With Marvel's entire next phase still being held close to the vest, it will probably be next year sometime before we get anything official about a Black Widow movie. Until then, we'll keep this rumor in mind and see if anything comes of it.
