Having been separated from Harley Quinn when she was captured by Batman and thrown into Belle Reve, The Joker started out extremely depressed at the start of Suicide Squad's present day story. While waiting for his right-hand man, Johnny Frost, to deliver information about Harley's whereabouts, the Clown Prince of Crime was moping in a room filled with all sorts of weird items, including baby onesies. Two years after Suicide Squad's release, director David Ayer has explained that the reason Joker had baby clothes was because it was foreshadowing the vision Harley would have later on. As Ayer put it:
Those are the same onesies the babies were wearing in Harley's fantasy vision.
In case you need a refresher on Suicide Squad, during the climactic conflict, Enchantress offered to give each of the Squad members their deepest desires in exchange for them serving her, and she attempted to entice them by putting visions of said desires in their head. Harley Quinn saw her and Joker, both looking normal, raising two babies, hence why the onesies were shown earlier in the movie.
Of course, this vision wasn't reality, and Harley ended up feigning interest in Enchantress' offer so she could get close enough to the magical antagonist to cut out her heart. So then what was up with Joker keeping baby clothes around? As a fan explained on David Ayer's Twitter post, Harley truly wants a family, so she likely bought the onesies before she and Joker were separated. When Harley was incarcerated, Joker laid out the onesies alongside his collection of guns, knives and laptops. You know, as one does when you're sad your significant other's been taken away.
The Joker and Harley Quinn have frequently an item ever since the latter debuted on Batman: The Animated Series over 25 years ago, and while usually their relationship is all kinds of dysfunctional and sees Joker abusing Harley, in Suicide Squad, the Clown Prince of Crime seemed to actually care about her. He proved this by rescuing her from Task Force X and then breaking her out of Belle Reve at the end of the movie.
Given their criminal lifestyle, it's doubtful we'll ever see Joker and Harley Quinn settling down to start a family in the DC Extended Universe. In fact, it's unclear when we'll see Joker and Harley back together again in this continuity. Both were previously expected to appear in Suicide Squad 2, but now that James Gunn's taking charge on the project, who knows if that's still the case. There's also that Joker/Harley relationship movie, but who knows if that'll even make it past the development stage.
However, for fans of Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, she's returning to the big screen sooner rather than later. She'll appear alongside Huntress, Black Canary and Detective Renee Montoya in Birds of Prey, which is scheduled for release on February 7, 2020 and will see the main protagonists reportedly facing off against Black Mask.
