So heres the tea: the Bond franchise hasnt hired a female writer since 1963. That finally changed when Fleabag and Killing Eve creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge was recently hired to polish the script on Bond 25. These action flicks may always be high on the testosterone, but having a woman in the writers room couldnt hurt, especially when it comes to the iconic Bond Girls.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge was reportedly approached by 007 himself to join the team of writers rounding out Daniel Craigs last hurrah as the suave secret agent. He wanted some of her specific brand of wit and quirkiness hes a fan of from Fleabag in the Bond 25 script. It will be exciting to see a bit of Waller-Bridges offbeat humor in the upcoming film. It also looks like her involvement will benefit the movie beyond that too. Check out her recent words:

Theres been a lot of talk about whether or not [the Bond franchise] is relevant now because of who he is and the way he treats women. I think thats bollocks. I think hes absolutely relevant now. It has just got to grow. It has just got to evolve, and the important thing is that the film treats the women properly. He doesnt have to. He needs to be true to this character.

In a world where powerful men are being exposed left and right for taking advantage of women, James Bonds womanizer ways isnt exactly one to side with. But its the very nature of the character and has been for almost 70 years. Should James Bond change to reflect a more modern hero? Phoebe Waller-Bridge doesnt think so.

Following the #MeToo era, there are still plenty of playboys left in the world, including James Bond in the fictional space. As Phoebe Waller-Bridge explains, its not important that his lifestyle changes because its more relevant than ever. The focus of the franchise going forward needs to be on crafting more three-dimensional women who reflect the world today, and per her words to Deadline, it looks like the Fleabag star will help make that happen in Bond 25.

The film has already hired several actresses, including the return of La Seydouxs Madeleine Swann and Naomie Harris Moneypenny, as well as newcomers Lashana Lynch (from Captain Marvel) and Ana de Armas. Phoebe Waller-Bridge continued with this:

I just want to make sure that when they get those pages through, that Lashana, La and Ana open them and go, I cant wait to do that. As an actress, I very rarely had that feeling early in my career. That brings me much pleasure, knowing that Im giving that to an actress.

In an additional effort to give Bond 25 a better edge, the film has reportedly hired an intimacy coordinator for the first time for the franchise to help the actors feel comfortable and during the movies sex scenes.

After Danny Boyle dropped the project last year, the director was replaced by Cary Joji Fukunaga. The new helmer best known for his work on It is also co-writing the script with Scott Z. Burns (The Bourne Ultimatum) and frequent Bond writing team Robert Wade and Neil Purvis. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is the latest addition to the movie hitting theaters on April 8, 2020.

What's Happening With The Live Action Akira Movie, According To Taika Waititi

Hollywood doesn't have the greatest track record with making live action adaptations of anime properties, but much like with video games movies, the industry continues to churn them out every now and then in the hopes that one will finally break the trend. For over a decade, Warner Bros has been attempting to get a live action Akira movie off the ground, and last September, it was reported Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi was being eyed to bring the project to life. Seven months later, Waititi is officially attached to Akira, and now he's revealed that rather than remake the 1988 animated movie, he plans on adapting the original manga. Waititi stated:

I haven't really started to get my head around it yet. What I wanted to do was an adaptation of the books, 'cos a lot of people are like, 'Don't touch that film!' and I'm like, 'I'm not remaking the film, I want to go back to the book.' A lot of the people freaking out haven't even read the books, and there are six gigantic books to go through. It's so rich. But Akira is one of my favourite films; my mum took me to see it when I was 13 and it changed my life.

Take Waititi clearly has a lot of love for the Akira saga, but rather than look to the film he grew up on for inspiration, he'll turn to to the main source material, which was published from 1982 to 1990. Six volumes of material is a lot more to work with compared to a movie a little over two hours long, but its also allows Waititi more room to put his own unique stamp on the material for a live action movie. Waititi also isn't interested in following in the footsteps of movies like Ghost in the Shell by whitewashing the cast, as he previously said that he would cast "Asian teenagers" in the main roles and keep Akira tied to its Japanese roots.

All this being said, don't expect Akira to be the next project Taika Waititi will direct. As he mentioned later during his conversation with Dazed Digital, he's heading to Prague to begin work on Jojo Rabbit, which is about a boy growing up during World War II and creates an imaginary friend that is an amalgamation of his father and Adolph Hitler, who Waititi will play. It was also announced a few years back that Waititi is working on a stop-motion movie called Bubbles, starring the chimpanzee of the same name that once belonged to Michael Jackson. Nevertheless, while it may be a while until Taika Waititi finally puts Akira into production (and that's assuming he doesn't end up leaving the project, like so many before him), it sounds like he's already forming ideas on how he wants the cyberpunk tale to look in a live action setting.

Why Franchises Should Be Praised, Not Condemned For Killing Off Characters

Warning: MASSIVE spoilers ahead for Pacific Rim Uprising! Read ahead at your own risk!

Now that Pacific Rim Uprising has debuted in theaters and audiences have had a chance to check out Steven DeKnight's sequel for themselves, there's a lot to dig into and talk about. One of the most significant topics of conversation is the way Uprising treats the heroes from Guillermo del Toro's original film, particularly with regards to the death of Mako Mori at the hands of a rogue Jaeger. Many corners of the internet have expressed outrage over the decision to kill the hero of the original film, but we're here today to re-emphasize the fact that killing off fan-favorite franchise heroes is something to be praised for a movie such as this.

And finally, just in case you thought those last two tweets were outliers, check out one more.

So there's some intense passion out there, as well as some serious opposition to the decision to kill Mako. While it's certainly valid to feel anger and sadness when a beloved character dies in a franchise, it's also worth mentioning that it's something worth celebrating. In an era in which heroes continuously find themselves saved from the brink of death to live on in franchises that continue in perpetuity, the decision to kill someone as beloved as Mako feels fresh, exciting and downright bold.

It doesn't matter if it's Mako Mori, Star Wars' Luke Skywalker and Han Solo or Skyfall's M. As long as the death feels earned by the movie and provides a proper impetus to galvanize our other heroes to move forward and rally themselves, then franchises should allow themselves to let go of the past and kill beloved heroes. There appears to be a strong sense among some fans that certain characters and heroes deserve happy endings and a chance to ride off into the sunset. That's appealing in theory, but if every character gets that, then it takes all of the risk and drama out of a big-budget blockbuster.

Audiences need to believe that a character can die for the stakes in these movies to remain tangible, and for the creators behind these movies to feel uninhibited in their approaches to the material. The fact that audiences have responded to Mako's downfall with this much passion proves how beloved she was/is and reminds us of the ever-present risk of death and failure that these films need to maintain.

Moreover, this is not a situation like the Fast and Furious franchise's decision to kill Han at the end of Fast and Furious 6 (originally seen in Tokyo Drift). Audiences widely criticized Han's murder at the hands of Deckard Shaw for the way in which the heroes responded to it and eventually let the elder Shaw brother into the fold. The emotional payoff for Han's demise was reversed by removing any of the catharsis of seeing Shaw punished; on the other hand, Mako's death was correctly built up to and earned by Pacific Rim Uprising, and we mourned her. It worked, whether we liked it or not.
