Who Marc Maron Might Play In Joaquin Phoenix's Joker Movie

Shazam! and Wonder Woman 1984 have the DC Extended Universe covered in 2019, but on top of that, DC and Warner Bros are also releasing the standalone Joker movie next year, with Joaquin Phoenix playing this version of the Clown Prince of Crime. With production scheduled to begin soon, casting reports/announcements have been trickling through in recent weeks, and the latest update is that GLOW star Marc Maron is in talks to join Joker. As for who he would play, supposedly it's the booking agent for the talk show hosted by Robert de Niro's character.

Aside from this booking agent playing a part in booking Joaquin Phoenix's character on Robert de Niro's character's show (duh), Variety didn't provide any other details about this role Marc Maron is being eyed for on Joker. However, given that this talk show appearance plays a role in Phoenix's character being driven to madness, it's possible that this agent is around for that big moment. Once Phoenix's character becomes the Clown Prince of Crime, presumably that means the agent would be on his list of targets. If this booking agent is anything like Maron's other roles, no doubt we can expect him to be curmudgeonly and intolerant of nonsense.

A longtime standup comedian, Marc Maron has been hosting his own podcast, WTF with Marc Maron, since 2009, but on the movie and TV front, his credits include Get a Job, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, Louie and Maron. He was most recently seen reprising Sam Sylvia in Season 2 of the Netflix series GLOW. Assuming Maron signs on the dotted line for Joker, he would join a cast that also includes Frances Conroy as Joker's mother, while Zazie Beetz is in talks to play a single mother who catches the eye of the man who will become The Joker.

Although The Joker has been Batman's arch-nemesis for nearly eight decades, from what's been revealed about the Joker movie so far, it doesn't sound like the Caped Crusader will appear. In fact, so far there's nothing about this movie that screams 'typical comic book adaptation.' Budgeted at approximately $55 million, Joker has been described as a "dark character study" in the vein of Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy, which is even more appropriate description now with Robert de Niro's addition. Set in the 1980s, Joker seems to be taking many cues from The Killing Joke, which portrayed the cackling villain as a failed standup comedian who became insane after "one bad day."

Between 2014 and 2015, Joaquin Phoenix was interested in acting in a low-budget "character study"-type film about a comic book villain like the Joker. Phoenix had previously declined to act in the Marvel Cinematic Universe because he would have been required to play the roles he was offered, like the Hulk and Doctor Strange, in multiple films.

Making movies is a complicated process with a lot of moving parts. One might think a smaller film like A Quiet Place might have an easier time, but that isn't exactly the case. It turns out the complicated part of making A Quiet Place wasn't creating the alien creatures with digital effects, it was making sure the cornfield was ready. No, really. After the production found the farmhouse they wanted to use for the film, they had to turn around and plant corn quickly, in order to be sure it would be the right height when they needed it several months down the road. According to producer Andrew Form...

[The neighbors] had actually told us, 'if you don't plant your corn by a certain date, you're not going to have corn fields.' This is early for a movie to start doing stuff like this, we're not even in pre-production yet, but we have to plant our corn fields to get them up to eight feet.

Apparently, the people living around the location where A Quiet Place was filmed were quite excited to have a movie crew making a film near them, which meant they were more than happy to offer an important piece of advice to the non-farmers, which could have caused problems had it not been relayed. A Quiet Place producer Andrew Form says in a behind-the-scenes feature on the new Blu-ray release that, since the film wasn't officially in pre-production yet, the crew was mostly focused on finding the location and clearing it out so they could start to get it ready for filming. By the time anybody might have thought about planting corn, it likely would have been too late in the season, potentially pushing shooting back by months, if not a full year.

And that cornfield is an important one, there's a significant sequence in A Quiet Place that takes place in the cornfield. Without corn that is tall enough to conceal the creatures, the sequence wouldn't work. That would mean either completely changing the story, or if possible, putting CGI corn on top of the actual corn to complete the necessary height, which would have greatly increased the film's costs, and probably wouldn't have worked well anyway.

Part of what makes A Quiet Place work is that, with the exception of the creatures, which look even more alien because they are digital effects, the rest of the movie is practical and real, even the corn.

It's crazy to think that something as simple as corn was a potential hurdle for A Quiet Place. Luckily, they dealt with it the proper time and were able to put together a compelling and unique horror movie. You can pick up A Quiet Place on Digital and Blu-ray today.

How Chadwick Boseman Compares Playing Black Panther For Ryan Coogler And The Russos

Because of his introduction in Captain America: Civil War, Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther has been sculpted by some very different filmmakers during his tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was directors Joe and Anthony Russo who were tasked with bringing the character into the franchise back in 2016, but Ryan Coogler has expanded his world with the upcoming solo film. You'd think that there would be some gaps in Boseman's experience working with the directors, each having their own vision of the hero, but even he was surprised not to find a great deal of difference in the experiences. The actor recently told me,

There's no contrast. I think what the Russo brothers were mindful of, was... first of all, they work as one mind, meaning Joe and Anthony. They're very different in terms of how they express themselves, but their arguments allow them to be very succinct and impactful when they deal with the cast. And they shot these movies, they've shot several of these, so they know exactly what they want, and they were very mindful of not taking away from what Ryan [Coogler did].

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Chadwick Boseman during the Los Angeles press day for Black Panther last week -- and in addition to discussing his views on the Wakandan border debate, I also asked about the scope of his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date. Specifically, I asked about the contrasts that he found working with the Russo brothers and Ryan Coogler, but apparently it was really a seamless transition.

Continuing, Chadwick Boseman pointed out that Ryan Coogler inherited Black Panther as a character for the solo film, with Joe and Anthony Russo not knowing who was going to take the project's helm. Fortunately, however, the filmmakers (along with writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely) were mindful to keep some important doors open that Coogler could then explore in his own film. Said Boseman,

[When the Russos were making Captain America: Civil War] they didn't even know who was going to direct the movie, but they didn't want to take away from what anybody was going to do. I was probably more worried about it than I needed to be, but they never really had a perspective about a different thing. They let Ryan establish what Wakanda was, and then they bought into that as we continued working together - because I've worked with them again on Infinity War.

Based on what we saw in the first trailer for The Avengers: Infinity War, the nation of Wakanda will be an extremely important location, which makes one wonder about its portrayal in comparison to what Coogler has created. Of course, it certainly must have been helpful that Black Panther and the massive crossover blockbuster were in production at the same time down in Atlanta, Georgia -- which is also why we only have less than three more to wait before Infinity War's release.
